Root Need advice on backing up before warranty exchange?

I think my DX is "circling the bowl" and I am going to exchange it for a new one.
Before I do so I wanted to back up everything I could so I don't lose any more than I have to. I do have Titanium Backup on the phone but I don't know if that will be able to put apps back on the new phone as is or if I have to do something special?

I plan on unrooting it and pulling the SD card and then hope to re root the new one and put the SD card back in and restore everything I can to the new phone.

I would just like to try to avoid the days and weeks of setup and tweaking it took to get this one "just right" if I could.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I have been posting on Motorola's support forums and several mods and such have suggested I return it for a new one. Plus I have a warranty for a reason, I would rather return it now than try to "make it work" or "get by" and end up with the warranty expired and a faulty device.

It's just doing lots of weird crap, example: when I wake the screen up, the screen is blank, but if I turn it just right I can see that the backlight is just not on, the LDC reflects the clock and the "lock slider" but the phone is totally frozen, I have to pop the battery to reset it, even holding the power button down for 10+ seconds does nothing. That's just one of several issues I have discovered.

i'm just going to through this out there, but you do know that when you rooted your device you voided your warranty right? and if they see superuser there they could (not definitely, but could) refuse your warranty.
that being said, I have seen both my devices do that from time to time. A battery pull and reboot clears it right up.
I understand that you have been in Moto's support forums, but if you listed out your major problems here, there are typically 1 to several other people that have both experienced and fixed/helped to fix said problems. Every issue I have posted here has been met with other people experiencing/fixing said issues. I'd give this a try before having to set up a new device.
also, to answer your main question, if you batch backup apps + data in titanium, pull your sdcard, root the new device and download titanium again from the market, then just batch restore all apps and data then you should be fine. If you are using a replacement launcher like go or lpp, they typically have a feature in the settings where you can backup your configuration. this doesn't work for widgets however. you will have to replace all your widgets manually. I'm sure we could help you on most issues, but if you are set on a replacement then I understand.

You need to unroot first, and make sure superuser isn't there. Odds are you'll need to do a full sbf back to stock froyo.

For backup, and use the google gmail backup for all my contacts. I use astro's backup utility to back up all my installed apps. (free)

Since I'm heading to leaked Gingerbread, I don't worry about app data backup, since I'll need to wipe that anyway. You can download free apps in the market to back up your angry bird saved games as well so you don't loose those.

I just got a replacement DX for my old one (bad ongoing freeze issues for 3 months), and the new phone runs flawlessly.

All your system settings should've been saved by titanium backup. If you're using a launcher backup all the settings using its backup function. You should be able to restore a new phone to identically the way you have it now.
Titanium backup doesn't save *everything*.

What I did when I did a warranty exchange for a hardware issue (which had absolutely nothing to do with my rooting) is I made a nandroid backup using bootstrap recovery. I also did a batch backup of everything with titanium backup pro. Then I unchecked the save my settings on google's server option and did a full SBF of my phone, making it like new. This serves to completely get rid of any evidence of root as well as wiping any data off of the phone.

Then I simply took the new phone, rooted it, and restored my backup. (Note: if you are on gingerbread, you will need to reflash the same version before you can restore the nandroid). It worked flawlessly, though some people have said that they ahve had trouble with restoring a nandroid to a different droid X in the past. If that hadn't worked, I simply would have restored everything possible with Titanium backup.

No it doesn't save it as well as a nandroid backup but does make things a lot easier.

Useful post. I'm sure the OP was glad you could help out with valuable input. Don't bother posting if you aren't going to bother to try and help.

it was quite useful, i corrected an assumption that the OP had about his warranty...

warranty returns of rooted phones are part of the reasoning behind manufacturers getting so strict about not letting us modify our phones...when you root your device you take on the responsibility that if it breaks, its your own fault and Moto/VZW are no longer responsible for replacing it...

Warranty returns of rooted phones that break because of something you did using root are a problem.

Warranty returns of rooted phones that break b/c of something completely unrelated to root? I don't see how its a problem. For example, if tomorrow I wake up and my headphone jack randomly stopped working, I'm backing up, SBFing, and going to the verizon store. On the other hand, if I brick my phone while trying to flash a ROM, then that was my own fault and I have no business going to VZW.

Rooting automatically voiding your warranty? Meh.

ok so if rooting automatically voids your warranty and today your volume button breaks are you going to hold yourself the the "well i rooted so now my warranty is void" standard? NO , no one will and that's not wrong obviously , also stuff happens man, just because someone rooted their device does not mean the issue at hand is even related to root or anything and yes they should be able to use their warranty without having to hear a bunch of crap, people want to beat a dead horse over and over with this issue, the damn boot-loader is locked, it was locked when the damn device first came out, this is nothing NEW

alright... time to quit the freaking b**ching...
everyone has their opinion about the whole deal but when you take actual FACTS into consideration Metfanant is right, the second you root it you throw your manufacturers warranty out the window
end of debate there
are there ways around that? yes of course! whether you choose to use them or not is up to you... (I had my phone rooted, but ran into a manufacturers issue (half the screen was dead) tried an SBF just to make sure it wasnt another issue, it did nothing so I exchanged the phone (turns out the issue was a known issue by Moto and Verizon with some of the release day X's))
its not illegal to root them... just voids the manufacturers warranty...

really this whole debate is why I dispise the "simple" root methods... so easy a caveman can do it crap... IMO people should know and understand WTF they are doing and how to fix it before they do it. If you dont understand it and cant take to time to research it a little and figure it out then you shouldnt be doing it in the first place... just my .02

anyway... back to the OP's topic
if your on the stock system (2.2.1) I personally would make a nandroid backup which saves on your SD card so when you get the new phone you can restore your nandroid after you root it again. though it wouldnt do any hard to make a Tit Backup and launcher backup (if your using one) just to be safe as well.

no one ever said he was wrong about it being a fact or not, anyone obviously knows its a fact bro

i am not acting like a child Metfanant, i dont want to have this or any argument with anyone on any forum and im sure you know that, i usually try to keep the peace, my only point is that the observation really did not need to be made, stuff happens and just because you have a rooted device does not mean you cannot act on your warranty since your rooted. There are so many variables that come into play with a device acting up or breaking. Now i do agree with you that if you mess up rooting or fn with your device then yes you are on your own, i apologize if i acted wrongful and jumped on your post in an uncalled for manner, it was wrong of me, your entitled to your opinion as i am too and i should not have said what i said

the problem is that you're putting a moral twist on warranty issues...just like a lot of people were doing with the tethering problems...

if your warranty is voided...at the end of the day it doesn't matter what the problem is with the phone there is no warranty for Moto/VZW to honor...its voided...

now if you want to make an argument that rooting would have not caused a problem with your headphone jack, or speaker, or screen issues...then i completely agree, you're right rooting will not damage the hardware on your phone in that manner...but it still doesn't mean your warranty covers those issues..

your warranty is a black/white issue...bringing up the other stuff is trying to make it a gray issue...

that was all that i was saying...

Well, this is suppose to be a HELP forum and not a forum for criticizing someone for a post they make, no matter how much you might disagree with it. I believe according to this: http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-x/116213-zero-tolerance-policy-all-members-read.html if you can help someone that has made a post asking for help, then please respond and help them. If all you can do is criticize them, then according to the zero tolerance policy, I think you should not post. Maybe the mod's need to start cracking down a little more and then when wouldn't have to have these discussions on every other post. :)

so my question then becomes...should we allow these forums to become a place where we encourage and help others to circumvent rules such as gaining access to paid apps for free (pirating)...theft of services (unauthorized tethering)...and warranty fraud (returning phones for warranty replacements when warranty is void)??...

because if we encourage the breaking of some rules...why not them all??...from the moment i got here i was under the impression that such activities were against the general policies of these boards...

Hi there. Consider this post required reading by all in this thread.

I cleaned up some of the invective. I was going to hand out a few infractions, but instead, as I continued reading, I see that a few of you have already calmed down and come to a meeting of the minds.

See? When there's no invective, and when the simple rules of politeness and common courtesy are followed, a meeting of the minds is not that difficult.

I officially declare the debate about the warranty issue ended in this thread. The point has been made and agreed to, anything further on it can have its own thread - it doesn't need further beating here.

I was going to delete all un-related posts, but instead, I've deleted the worst of the invective and have left enough to record the meeting of minds.

Mod warnings, immediate probation if not followed, and as this is a required-read post, the notice is valid and in force:

  1. Invective is counter-productive. It adds nothing to the discussion, and it's not polite. Points can be made without the words like golden child, childish, etc, etc. No further invective by the posters here (names recorded) - in this thread or another will be tolerated.
  2. Unless you have a red moderator badge below your name, you do NOT have the right to tell someone to not post.

My personal advice:

  • Try to be excellent to one another instead of all this hoopdee
  • Read the links in my sig, be sure you know what we ask, don't just think you know. A refresher reading is always good.
  • Have a good holiday - if you see the Easter Bunny, tell him hi for me!

Freely question me about this here or via PM - either is open - but the discussion between each other on the warranty has stopped.

I just don't see the point in deleting posts.. Your previous post makes sense to people involved or that got the chance to read it previously. Yes my post was pointless. But leave it for people to see, so that down the road other people can learn from others mistakes. Especially when it comes to deleting whole threads. Lock them and let it be an example. Just mho..

I just don't see the point in deleting posts

Then allow me to clear it up for you.

Posts will be deleted if they are deemed to be counter-productive to the future of the topic. Leaving them "as an example" only encourages others to respond and continue the course of action that was moderated originally.

I trust that this clarifies the situation.
