I have found a new program on XDA called GingerBreak APK to root and unroot Ally. It is run 100% from your phone like z4root was, and will root/unroot at the click of a button. It uses the newer GengerBreak exploit and works on Ally running both 2.2.1 and 2.2.2.
Follow the instructions exactly and consider donating to the author if you find it useful.
To Root/unroot 2.2.1 or 2.2.2
1.Go to [26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers and down GingerBreak APK v1.2 **Please read through the original post for need to know info**
2.copy it to the root directory of your SD Card
3. use a file management program such as Root to navigate to the file (GengerBreak-1.20.apk) and install on your phone. explorer https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&feature=search_result
4. Open program and press "Root Device"
5. wait for phone to reboot. Congratulations, your rooted.
