I have found a new program on XDA called GingerBreak APK to root and unroot Ally. It is run 100% from your phone like z4root was, and will root/unroot at the click of a button. It uses the newer GengerBreak exploit and works on Ally running both 2.2.1 and 2.2.2.

2.copy it to the root directory of your SD Card

3. use a file management program such as Root to navigate to the file (GengerBreak-1.20.apk) and install on your phone. explorer https://market.android.com/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&feature=search_result

It messes with the vold.fstab hence the sdcard issues. ive experienced them too. Haven't tested GingerBreak on 2.2.1 but i have on 2.2.2.

C skills: yummy yummy, GingerBreak!

GingerBreak VS740 - Pastebin.com

it works.

However, many people will refuse to support root this way. Still best if you follow the guide. fastboot can be your best friend if you let it!
