Help Desire screen lock password issue

I've just set up a password for the screen-lock on my Desire but when I had to enter the password to unlock the screen for the first time it wasn't accepted. I now have no access to my phone other than to the screen-locked home screen! My SIM PIN code still wirks but that's as far as I can get.
Has this happened to anyone else and of so is there anyway I can unlock my screen without a password I don't have?

you could try a factory reset
dont know if the option is available on stock recovery though

boot to bootloader (voldown+power)
select recovery with voldown and click power when highlighted
when met with the exclamation mark hold volup+power. there might be an option for factory reset
