nallen88,

First off, welcome to the AndroidForums!

If you haven't explicitly done anything to root your phone like following one of the rooting threads here in our all-things-root sub-forum (or the "other" methods), then you are most likely, not yet rooted.

If you look in your app drawer, do you have an app labeled "Superuser" (usually a black/white Android head that kind of looks like skull-and-crossbones)?

The "other" methods are things like Z4root, which will work, but won't allow you install a custom ROM (but should allow you to install and run root-only apps if that's all you really want to do).

I can point you to more things, but I'd like to find out some more information first.

Cheers!

Stock Eris was updated with an over-the-air update in May 2010 - so the Eris has been running 2.1 unrooted for over a year now.

The best way to root is to follow this method, which is well illustrated:

http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html

That method mentions installing PlainJane as a good replacement custom ROM, but I think that xtrSENSE is better. You can find it here:

[ROM][GPL][3/15/2011] xtrSENSE5.0.1 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit]-HTC Sense - xda-developers

Also, the instructions in the fourth post of the Universal Root for Dummies will instruct you, at some point, to run a command called "Wipe data/factory reset." Rather than do that, try to "Wipe Dalvik cache" instead. This will leave all of you data and apps you have installed on the phone now while still giving you root (as well as an overclocked and less battery-intensive software.)

Ask questions if you get stuck/confused!

also, i did look at that "for dummies" and i went on the market. searched for that Gscript lite app, and its not on the market...so, where do i go from here??

well forget it i guess i wont be doing this...thanks anyway guys.

Well, if you do change your mind, I am seeing it in the market. Perhaps you can search for the app developer instead? (Pinkventure).

Here is an app link to the market: https://market.android.com/details?id=nl.rogro.GScriptLite&feature=search_result

what exaclty does rooting do?

Hmm, well, to start a list:

- the eris runs its processor at 528 MHz. Rooting will allow you both to run it faster (710 MHz is safe) when the phone is busy, and slower when the phone is not, in order to give you performance when you are using the phone and better battery life when it is idle (which is likely most of the time.)

- you can remove many of the preinstalled "bloatware" apps - Visual Voicemail, Amazon MP3 Store, Peep, Footprints, Teeter, Stocks, etc.

- The phone can have a lot more space made available for apps and data - no more issues with "out of memory" errors

- Far better performance in the dialer and the messaging app

- The ability to run root-only utilities that allow you to fully back up your phone, (Titanium Backup), remove cache files (Cache Cleaner NG). Plus some/most will allow you to move apps to the SD card (though I'd stay away from that for Android 2.1 and for most apps)

- run custom builds of Froyo (2.2) and Gingerbread (2.3) without the Sense launcher and without the HTC customized apps (Mail, Browser, People, Photos, Messaging)

I'm probably forgetting some things...

You shouldn't do something you're not comfortable doing. That being said, this is the easiest, most educating way to root your phone. The dummies method is time tested and there would be very little chance of bricking your phone. If you run into any problems, there will be many knowledgeable people here to help you out.

Take your time, read through the thread to get an idea of any problems others have run into and how they were resolved. If you feel comfortable, then give it a shot. You can always unroot the phone if you need to.

First of all, it doesn't take very long at all, once you get all of the pieces.

Finding Gscript Lite in the market will definitely be a good first step. It will not hurt to install it - you will not be rooted just installing the app, and you can easily uninstall it. Again, search for PinkVenture and see if it shows up.

It's also possible and quite simple to unroot if you don't like the results.

But, really, you don't have to do this. It's purely up to you.

um ok, so i clicked on the link above to send that gscript to my phone and it is saying...this app is incompatible with my phone...ugh, this is the frustrating part that makes me not want to do it...

Give me a little bit to get settled in and some things straightened out and I'll pull it from a ROM for you. I think its ok to do that with no trouble from anyone ;)

omg getting frustrated, i tried that one too and i signed into google as u should, everything, it does not find my device...

Search for it in the market on the phone. Search for that exact string - it should find it. When you get it installed, let us know. The next two steps are quite simple.

[edit] I am talking about HTC Eris 1 Click Root App

It's probably better to start with something cool and easy to install, like xtrSENSE, to get a feet for how the phone is better rooted, and for a really easy way to get the phone set up without reinstalling apps, resetting them up, waiting for data to sync, etc., etc. Cool can wait a day or two.

(Note that this is an Eris so cool is relative.)

Here is GScript apk pulled from xtrSense. Download it and place it on your SD Card. Go to settings>applications and check Unknown Sources. Go to market and search astro. Install astro file manager. Open astro, select the GScript.apk and install it. Then you're all set ;):D:p

as far as this, u have to sign in or create an account in my case to download this....
