good choice . make sure you put a screen protector on it before you do anything!

Laptop, but it's not totally necessary. If you go to settings --> applications --> development, and check "USB Debugging" it will connect as USB mass storage.

You can accomplish the same under another section, but I forget where.

right think its done got vids on laptop many thanks , next step is ive got unlimited data on the galaxy s 2 and watch bbc iplayer on it , how do i play it on my laptop using usb? wirless connection i dont think it works

What is it that you are trying to do? Using the phone as a modem and stream the videos through the computer or play files located in the phone.

For using the phone as a modem, just go to settings/wireless & network/ tethering....

For files playing, just connect with USB.

If you want to stream video in SGS2 and have it played in an external monitor, I am not sure how it is done, but there are probably apps out there that figured it out already.

Okay then. Just go to;

settings/wireless & network/tethering

You can select either wireless or USB I think Of course USB is better so by all means just use that. Tried it before and it works fine, but speed is not consistent as you can see that 3G drops occasionally between 2G and 3G.
