Available Holster(s)

Looking at Verizon's site, there appears to only be ONE holster available that's not some sort of soft pouch with a flap - the shell/holster combo. Is this really the only thing available from Verizon? If so, does the phone with the shell fit in the car and/or media dock?

I've never liked any cases I saw for my Droid because slider keyboard devices (in general) aren't designed for proper attachment of a shell/case, and the Droid is no exception. I don't expect the Droid 3 is an exception either.

Am I missing something? Are there alternatives, like the plain holster that the naked Droid fits in?

the current case/holster combo that is available from vzw is the same style as many other phones on vzw. they have a lot that are made of the same material (plastic) and have the same pattern desig. on the d2 i don't believe it fit into the dock with the shell on it (but i never tried it for sure - just told this). could be different with the d3. i have the d3 case/holster coming tomorrow, but unfortunately i do not have the dock to confirm either way.

i believe there are many generic holster options available that would fit the d3. i think most of them are soft leather with a flap. just search on amazon or something.

as far as alternatives right now accessories are pretty limited due to how new the phone is. however i have a feeling that will change in the upcoming weeks.

Is there just a plastic belt clip style holster available?

I don't want the added bulk of the case. Will the verizon case holster combo work without the case?

I've had no problems with OG Droid being naked the entire time I've had it. I dropped it several times, including from about 8 feet onto a thinly carpeted concrete floor. The only physical problem I ever had with it was after I rolled over on it in the holster while on a similar floor - and I'm 250lbs on a good day.

Though I'd rather forego the case/bulk with a Droid 3 also, the primary consideration is that however I carry it, it must fit in the car dock and desk dock without having to remove anything, since I use my phone for navigation multiple times per day. You can do this with the Droid 2 and its car mount, because there is an insert in the car mount that you can remove if you're using the Motorola snap on case/holster combo.

Ideally, I'm looking for something that works exactly like the holster sold for the OG Droid.

Me to I can't give up my OG with holster until I'm able to do the same thing with the D3.

I just received my shell/holster combo in the mail and there is a red sticker on the box that says:

"Works with extended battery & multimedia station"

I was at the store this morning and I can confirm that the car dock has a removable insert so the phone can be used with or without the shell - just like the Droid 2 car dock.

Funny - the sales rep said it would not fit, and he didn't know why they designed things this way. Then I showed him the Droid 2 on display in the car dock and how the insert came out, and he got a Droid 3 car dock from the back and found the same style insert.

That's good to know. Id definitely be interested in a car dock if that's the case. And you gotta love it when you prove the sales guy wrong.

Did you pick up the shell/holster? I just put mine on the phone. It seems like there's a clip on the shell that is rubbing and interfering with the slide action of the d3. It is noticeably harder with the shell on. I wonder if all cases are going to be that way due to the design of the phone or if the one I got is a bad fit or something?

I didn't actually buy the phone yet, so no shell/holster either. That's one of the things that bugs me about slider phones - they aren't designed to have a shell or case properly attached. Each half of the shell must attach to the phone (as opposed to attaching to the other half of the shell on non-sliders), and there's no place in the design of the phone for that to happen. So what ends up happening is that case must protrude into the gap between the two halves of the phone - likely interfering with the slider mechanism. That's my main reason for not wanting a shell in the first place. Unfortunately, the only holster they sell requires using the shell.

Maybe we can get Dyson to make a case - they solve the problems others ignore. :)

My Verizon store had nothing for accessories.

I found a generic vertical holster without a flap at Target for $15 that seems to fit it well. Holds it snugly and enough sticks out the top to have easy access to it. No swivel, always vertical.

Edit: UPDATE: The case I got is not idea. The elastic stretched out a bit and without a flap to hold it in, the phone can fall out when sitting down. Still looking....

Edit 2: UPDATE: The case I got actually ripped on one side. Weak. Need a decent holster that can take my abuse...

Qmadix: Snap-On Cover with Holster for Motorola DROID 3
This is another option for you guys..i want this but dont know how bulky it is...does anyone have it?
That looks similar to the one VZW supposedly just started selling for the D3 at a cost of $30, too. I saw the DX2 version of it since the saleswoman couldn't locate the single D3 one she said the store supposedly has. I'll go next weekend to see if they have more shipments of this kind of case for the D3 and buy it, if so.
