(food for thought... what if revoloution was beta htc s-off??? I mean they did need our serial numbers. What if Wendy really killed smurfs, Im just asking questions)

I think HTC's deal is still good when compared to a situation like Motorola's where the bootloader security has proven to be uncrackable. At one point, it appeared that the Sensation and Evo 3D were going to be in that exact situation.

As a member of these forums and a proponent of device freedom, I feel it's my responsibility to offer the support services here in place of any warranty services lost. I personally believe that the people who tend to root are the ones that tend to read forums (otherwise, how will they know how to root their phone and find custom ROMs, etc). So my hope is that people come here for help, rather than going straight to the carrier or the manufacturer.

We need to prove to HTC and Sprint that the group of people who burden support organizations most are NOT the rooted users. We can take care of ourselves, TYVM.

It's not the warranty I'm all that worried about. It's if they try to void insurance claims. Being lost/stolen, physically damaged by outside forces (like gravity), or subject to water damage is not any more or less likely because of rooting.

I think this is a pretty fair policy. You are taking a calculated risk when modifying your handset with custom ROMs, kernels, and whatnot and HTC should not be responsible if you screw up and brick it.

In my opinion, it is better than having no option to unlock your bootloader at all, though we do have another option now too. That being said, I am carefully reading the fine print before doing anything.

I don’t think it will void the entire warranty. If there is an issue with your phone that has nothing to do with bootloader/rooting etc then I don’t see why they would repair or replace it under warranty. I think the way HTC did this is a win win for everyone. We are getting what we want(well we already got what we want) and at the same time HTC can still protect themselves from unnecessary liabilities.

The Sprint Rep that took care of me yesterday was helped out by one of the supervisors. We started talking about root on the 4G and the upcoming release on 3D. Keep in mind this is just one particular store, but he stated that they will be troubleshooting/servicing rooted phones that have the stock ROM only. If a user brings in a rooted phone with another ROM, he said they will ask that it be returned to stock and updated with whatever the latest OTAs are before they proceed to troubleshoot and/or repair (unless it is a completely obvious hardware defect not connected to the software in any way). That seems fair to me....

I'm a tech at a sprint store and the only time I make people flash back to stock is if we are exchanging the phone or if the problem is due to software. This varies on a store by store basis.

devs are getting better. Photons bootloader is already unlocked.

Edit, now that I think about it that would not be good business practice, and could get them into some legal trouble. Now I can't decide whether to say I read the User Guide or I didn't read the User Guide....

If it was HTC's beta S-OFF, I would doubt that HTC would allow them to put the "Revolutionary" banner on the bootloader.
