Root Kernel suggestion?

I finally took the plunge into ROM flashing last night. I'm running Synergy RLS1. I have done minimal reading about kernels and know I should probably have a different one for this ROM? Better power management and whatnot. My question is what is a good one? anyone have one in particular that works great with this ROM? I know HTC recently released the GB Kernels?

current kernel is: 2.65.10-gc0a661b
htc-kernel@and 18-2 #1
Baseband version: 2.15.00.05.02
Build number : Synergy (RLS1)

Also, I have a question about the ROM Manager app. There is a setting in there to check for updates to the ROM but when I select it it says "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing! Install the recovery through ROM manager first" I am using Amon Ra but wont this change my recovery utility back to clockwork mod?

do not use rom manager. it is very buggy and will create more problems thenit is worth. since you have amon ra 2.3, i would just uninstall the app. you do need clockwork mod to use rom manager. rom manager will not let you flash anything without clockwork mod.

as far as kernels goes, there are only three out right now to try, golden monkey 1.1, freedom .85, and chop suey 9.1. and the thing with kernels is the YRMV. what works for me may not work for you. so it is hard to say that one is better then the other. just make a nandroid backup and try one. give it a few days to see how batter life is. i always try new kernels when they come out. i'm currently testing chop suey 9.1.

Thanks ocn. Is it a good idea to let this ROM settle a bit first before flashing a new kernel anyways? In the meantime, I will re read the kernels for dummies again and try to retain a bit more of it :) Also, I'm trying the Battery Calibration App.

ROM Manager is now uninstalled!

good move.:) and it is not necessary to wait for the rom to settle down. i usually flash a rom and boot up and get everything set up the way i like it then i do nandroid backup and then flash my kernel.

Good in my opinion rom manager is so terrible. Try ChopSuey is basic, fast and has alot of good features, i havent run into any problems at all. Im using the "battery left' app and it took me about 2 days to calibrate my battery, make sure you deplete your battery to fully empty so when it dies turn it back on until it doesnt turn on anymore and then charge to full 100% and reapeat 3-4 times.

So you never flash rom and kernel is the same recovery session? Interesting. I have always done both in the same session. I almost never let my phone boot up with a stock kernel of any kind, whether it be Sense or AOSP.

+1 again Mizzou:)

But it never hurts to flash the rom then reboot, nandroid, then flash the kernel. may save you in the long run;)

I guess I just live dangerously! I don't know that I've ever had a bad flash of any kind. For all the people that have issues with Rom manager and Clockwork, I wish they would both just go away. I have used Amon RA 2.3 except for about a 2 week window after I originally rooted and it is flawless.

Yep, I have NOT had any trouble flashing roms or kernels with amon ra v2.3.

There are times though that I'll wait to flash a kernel, just in case. And in some cases, such as Virus's Synergy-Kingdom 8/24 rom, Ziggy has a kernel for that build specifically, so I would test that kernel out first before trying something new.

I got everything running smoothly so far. I went ahead and changed the animation boot screen and I'll give that other battery calibration app a try! I think I'll start trying out different kernels sometime this weekend. So far, I'm happy with everything but if I can get better battery life, I'm going to do what I can.

thanks for your input and thanks for all the guides you guys post! I'm sure I'll have many other questions in the future

Just a simple update. I flashed the chop suey kernel and rain it for a few days but I didnt really see any improvements in battery life. It seemed to be draining faster actually. I flashed the freedom kernel and I'll run it for a few days.

Does anyone know of a page with a collection of boot animations. I'd love to see a page with a wide selection.

ok what does the audio need to be named and where is it placed ? Seems like every audio name is different when i try this .... android_mp3.zip ?

you have to extract that zip and take the mp3 out...i just zipped it cuz it wouldnt let me download it from dropbox as just an mp3 by itself....so when you get the file out of the zip, put it on the root of your sd...(i use root explorer to do this btw)...go into root explorer and click on the R/w button at the top....then go into your sdcard folder and find the file...next, just copy it and go back out to the first folder...should be just a / ....go to system/customize/resources and paste the file in there....now you gotta rename it to android_audio.mp3...now reboot and it should work...

its named android_audio.mp3 and is in the system/customize/resources file. Im on sense rom. I know aosp roms dont support audio for this just yet ( even though i think there is a way around it i read somewhere ). I did it all correctly.

and you took the file out of the zip right?? you didnt just rename the zip android_audio.mp3 correct??

hmmm...its working on mine just fine...

here...i uploaded the file to mediafire....try this one instead...although i wouldnt think it would matter...
