it should be fine as long as when you take it out of the freezer or fridge you let it get back to room temperature because of condensation and stuff. aand yes i stick mine in the fridge too!
As a side note, if your battery isn't lasting as long, new Ally batteries are about $5 on amazon.com. I just replaced mine about a week ago. My phone went from barely lasting through an 8hr shift at work to lasting a little over 48 hrs with light use.
Also, calibrating it helps as well. Especially if you haven't since last flashing a rom.
i've heard of people freezing their batteries for long term storage. I don't know what would motivate you to stick in there out of the blue... but to each his own.
The long-term storage thing is just a myth. batteries are not food, storing in a cool place is not going to improve battery life.

Simple way to improve overheating while charging. Turn the phone battery side up and remove the back cover. You wouldn't think this makes much of a difference, but it does.
