Hi,
Is there a way to see what's inside Android OS?
I left my S2 idling and went to sleep, after i woke up i found it lost about one third of its charge.
So looked at the battery hoggers and saw this:

when ur phone's idling, the biggest thing thats running is ur OS, so no surprise to see the android OS usage so high if u've idled for 10 hours. tap on the graph and see how often ur phone was awake, while the screen was off.. looks like ur signed into latitude, for Maps to show 8%.. i sign out of latitude when not using it.. its a bit of a battery drainer...

personally, i'd be happy with a 33% drop after 10 hours, even idle.. :D but if not, u could narrow down the processes that are using battery with others apps.. android assistant has a pretty detailed battery usage feature, check it out, its free in the market

By the standards of the SGS2 I agree with heshanj - that's not too bad.

I think you just have to accept that battery life sucks and you have to think ways to manage that. I plug my phone in whenever I can (which is a lit of the time as I'm in front if a computer a large part of the day), I also carry a spare battery and an external battery.

I'm not sure what the two users above are smoking but losing a 3rd of your battery over night is not normal.

You should only lose a few percent over night.

It could be caused by something you've installed, if this has only happened recently what have you installed? Looking at your screenshot quite allot. :D

Haha I thought as much but didn't wanna disagree... (no offence)
And yes I did install a lot of apps so I wanted to see which one exactly is hogging the resources.
Still 2 questions arise
1) Android OS should be OS only, right? No other apps..
2) Is there a difference between Android OS and Android System?

Well most users here should by now know about the Android OS bug with 2.3.3, it seems to affect some users more than others and apparently is fixed with the 2.3.4 update, but I don't think it's been released officially yet so it's still affecting some users that don't update manually.

Check out this link, it's for the i9000 but it's the same bug.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039696

From my experience some apps just cause heavy battery drain on my Galaxy S2 and result in Android OS battery usage shooting up, usually after removing the offending app everything returns to normal.

I suppose your options are try and find the offending application through trial and error or if that doesn’t help update your firmware, I would suggest removing apps that monitor battery or data usage (3G). Also for some users this bug just comes and goes, that's not very helpful I know but that's how it seems.

As for why this happens and the difference between Android OS and Android System, I don’t know.

32 updates!?!?!? looks like you have left you auto update on.
secondly, turn your wifi off. watch the difference.

Right on loony.

Activity when you are not actively using it generally comes from Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth - Turn this off if you dont use it. Its in the notification bar. Also, I see that apps are still running. Go to...

Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Running.. and force close apps that are not getting used. Dont close apps that have the Android icon next to it - these are system apps.

Let us know how it goes..

my phones setup is basic. no auto sync, no updating widgets on home screen, not a lot of icons. i leave 3g on 24/7 and i can leave my phone unplugged overnight for 8 hours and i lose a max of 2% battery.

Simplify your phone if you want good battery life on idle. Dont leave things running that require the phones processor to work.

ALso i dont have juice defender. dont believe in it

I would disagree. my batt life has improved since rooting, removing bloatware, changing rom and properly configuring JD... did some tests and it really works once u understand how to use it.
how does it work? Ive only tried it in default form. Just turns 3g off when screen is off. But doesn't all the on/off of 3g drain the battery?

Either way, with 3g on, 1-2% loss over 8 hours. I cant ask for more than that.

If your used to turning things off yourself juice defender won't make any difference.
but is turning stuff on and off all the time better than just leaving it on all the time?

Im talking about 3g mainly. Its a pain to turn it off on this phone. lots of clicking though i do have a market sourced direct icon for it. All the other stuff i only turn on when i need it, which is not frequently.

if i had juice defender, 3g would probably be turned on and off 100 times a day

for me, leaving 3g on will drain my battery faster, using it or not. i dont really need to get on the net much, the odd email n social site look, updates..... market i ONLY do at home via wifi.

if you want to spend time on the net lots, just leave it on....but dont cry about bad battery life later.

Yeah that should be a given, leaving ANY kind of RF radio on (3g/4g/wifi/BT) is going to suck up battery, even moreso if the reception isn't great.

What do you mean lots of clicking? All you have to do hold the power button down then turn off data, takes just a couple of seconds.

But yeah turning it off and on as and when you need data is better than just leaving it on all the time.
