Help with convincing Stepmom!

Hey everyone, so here is the rundown i am a HUGE android fan and completely anti apple. My stepmom relies on me for advice on phones, she uses her phone for everything especially her work, she had sprint and an Evo4g she works for my father and he also had an Evo which they both loved they switched companies to T-mobile and they asked for phone advice again from me so i told them the HTC Sensation 4G. At the time it was that or the G2X i looked at the specs and HTC's phones have never really been a problem for me and they have always been great with updating, and well the phone got great reviews. So basically they got 3 Sensations one for her my father and another co-worker theyyyy hate them nothing but problems and i am not in the same state anymore so i cant be there to help figure out what is wrong with them or causing the problems (random reboots, locking up, losing signal etc...). Well now my fathers company is switching to Verizon because they are tired of T-mobiles service, here is the bad part......They want the Iphone4S so immediately i am of course telling them no and i brought up a few good points about the Droid RaZr and Nexus 4G lte bla bla but id like to get more information about why they should stay with Android and not go to Apple so any help or input would be appreciated thanks!

I've gone down that road with my sister a bunch times, and she works for Verizon! She loves the iPhone and will never go back. I told her she is deluded, etc. etc. etc., and her reply was:

"If you hate Apple so much for forcing me to use only what they want me to use, don't you hate yourself a little bit right now for doing the same thing?"

That shut me up.

I would suggest letting them do what they want. That way, if they get whatever and end up hating it, they won't blame you for it.

Han has it. Its almost impossible to change someone's mind once they have it set. You can't use your hatred for a product and tell someone not to get it.

It's like telling a younger person what exactly not to do, because it happens to everyone but sine they want to experience life for themselves they go out and get hurt or do something stupid and you say aloud or inner monologue, I told you so.

Iphone would be fine for them. Its a dumb phone for dumb people. Harsh. What i really mean is, if they dont want to be bothered with using a phone. The iphone is for them.

Ok let me rephrase this she wants to know why she should get an android or the Droid RaZr/Galaxy Nexus over the iphone she is not set on buying one or the other she just mentioned the iphone and was like well why would i want to stay with android over apple, she most likely saw the iphone commercial with siri and all of the sudden was sucked in. And i dont hate the iphone or apple i just prefer android for its openness and selection of products. Healthy competition keeps the advancement of technology on its toes!

I see, well then it's simple.

Does she like ease of use and pretty layouts? Does she care about longer battery life? Is she fine not having 4G speeds? Is 3.5" screen big enough for her? If so, she should get the iPhone.

Does she like to screw around with her phone, constantly changing the look and feel of the device? Does she like to watch HD movies on her phone? Does she want a blazingly fast load speed for web browsing? Does she want as big a screen as possible? If so, she should get the SGN.

I would ask them to keep track of how many times they would use Siri in a week if they had it. Chances are that it will be zero.

Well battery life will be better on the iphone if they are out and about and can't charge their phone multiple times a day. Android has more choices, different sizes, nobody is sure how the battery will be on the razr or nexus. All depends on what they like. Have them go in store and play with each( when they are out) or show them some videos of the nexus and the razr and go from there.

Really? I've seen a lot of comments about the poor battery life on the iPhone. The 4S even has several recent articles about poor battery life and Apple trying to figure out why. I even saw reports about it dropping 10% per hour.

With Android, it depends on which phone. I have no problem going all day with the X.

lte drains battery faster than 3g. if you want to have great battery life no lte phone will do that. Iphone 4s still made it through a day with like 40% battery left and similar lte phones I had to charge atleast 2 times a day.

It comes down to who will support them. If they are not going to have anyone to support them and need a smartphone for dummies, then the iPhone is it.

As for battery life, I just saw on the news this morning that the iPhone 4S has a battery issue as well. It may be in iOS5 though. The phone is constantly pinging for location draining the battery.

There's really not much wrong with the iPhone 4S. It's a pretty great product. If you want to sway someone away from Apple, just tell them about how horribly unethical Apple really is as a company.

Tell them about the "Apple Tax" aka Apple's grossly overpricing their products. Smartphones aren't the best example here since everyone overcharges for their smartphones, but the MacBook Pro is a perfect example. Apple has gone as far as lying in commercials to sell their products. They've made people think that the hardware in the MacBook is somehow superior to all other PCs, despite often using cheap manufacturers for their OEM parts.

Then there's the way Apple bullies anyone who encroaches on its turf. Apple is suing just about everyone over patent infringement, generally over patents that or so overly vague that there's absolutely no way they'd be granted to any normal person. Apple is clearly pulling some heavy political strings in the patent offices to get the patents it does. Then there's the fact that they went ahead and doctored photographic evidence in one of its recent court cases (Apple v Samsung regarding the Galaxy Tab in Germany). Apple somehow also got an injunction against Samsung without Samsung even being notified of the hearing, which is literally unheard of. There has never been a case in corporate law in which an injunction was granted ex parte.

If Apple isn't bribing or blackmailing officials, I'd be surprised. It really is that low of a company in my eyes.

I would agree with most posters here, you can't force them to not get iPhones.
I also agree with the statements on how Apple is a bit heavy handed.

However, the main reason I'm posting, since I like to have some content be a contribution to the actual theme of the post, if the big draw of the iPhone 4S was the Siri app, make sure they know that Android has its own...Iris :) It is still in alpha, getting towards beta, but the android market currently carries it.

Other than that, I would honestly see if they can quantify what it is about the iPhone that they really like. They may really want an iPhone instead of android. However the benefit that I see for the Droid RAZR right now is the construction. If you want a durable phone (aside from mil-spec ruggedized), that sounds like the one. Having a locked bootloader wouldn't hurt them since they don't sound like a tweaker.

The Galaxy Nexus honestly doesn't sound like their phone though. It'll be larger than the iPhone (and with many women I talk to, they don't want to feel like they're holding a tablet up to their ear) and vanilla Google is more of a tweaker/dev environment.

See if they can delay a bit so you can check out the RAZRs UI versus an iPhone 4S in the store. Keep in mind how they would use the system as opposed to what you think they might be able to use better. I know I set up my sister with a laptop that I had no problems setting up and running well - two to three years later, it's like that battered pet that you rescued coming back. Twitching at every touch...I'm just glad that laptop is inanimate :D She went Mac because it was more intuitive and they have easier support due to standardization.

Just a reminder, they can always return whatever phone they get within 2 weeks or purchase, they would just have to pay a restocking fee. If you want a reason for them to stay with Android and HTC, there is the Vigor that is coming out soon, which will be similar to the Evo. Honestly, I think the iPhone would be more of a reliability choice. Don't get me wrong, I love the options I have with Android and am waiting for the GNex to come out, but the iPhone will be less likely to be a repeat of the Sensation. The only real reason I can think of to suggest they not get the iPhone is that it is not 4G, which will make business go faster, but what good is 4G if the phone locks up

tl;dr = If they are willing to take another chance with HTC and Android, go with the Vigor/Rezound. If they want a phone that they know is going to work and not have them on the phone with CS, go with the iPhone.

Just let them go with the iPhone 4S. They are certainly not bad phones, and are mostly aimed at people that have no interest in tinkering with the phone. They work out of the box, with no changes, and are damn good at just that.

They are great smart phones, they are just for different parts of the market to Android. The sooner people realise this, the better for everyone.

My first post, and it's possibly I may already come across as.. Not a typical Android fan? :)

I don't understand why you don't let them get what they want? Who cares if you don't like apple if that is what they want and it works for them what is the big deal?

He already said they didn't want the iPhone, just that they were considering it. They are already fans of the iPhone because they know of it's reputation, but all he wanted was arguments in favor of Android. I agree that he shouldn't force them to get the phone that he likes, I actually convinced someone to get the Nexus S over an HTC phone and the person ended up not liking it. Personally I think they would be happier with the iPhone but as I said before, they should get the one they think they will like more, and if it turns out they do not want it, they can take it back and exchange it for a new phone.
