***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

Lol I was being dramatic. But anyway, with that philosophy you'll always be waiting in a never ending circle for the next best thing. You take what you get, you enjoy it, and you get the urge to switch phones within 2-3 months. The life of a geek.
I have a dinc I've had since early 2010, so I'm not new to Android. I still don't think a few weeks makes the nexus outdated. If you all think that, why are you bothering to wait for this particular phone? wait a bit longer and get a quad core or wait for 2nd generation LTE :)

The main thing, and i'm not being sarcastic, is that there is no consensus on anything w/ this phone. Everything is speculation outside the fact that stores have stock and what the managers are telling us.

All these leaks and no information from Verizon should at least let us realize that there is no consensus. We are all going to find out last minute together.

I should've rephrased: historically has VZW released a phone without a PR

Precisely, but March is 3+ months away, not 2 weeks away. I don't see how people can say the phone will be outdated if it comes out on 12/31 instead of 12/15. Seems like hyperbole to me. *shrug*

The point is, why get the phone on 12/31 when you can simply wait a few months and get a better phone?

If I wasn't on an OG Droid that is due to die any day now I would be more than happy to wait a few more months.

FWIW, I'm going to re-state (and clarify) what I said Saturday morning -

The ISIS/Wallet debate was exposed in this thread on Oct 14 before we hit 9k posts.

I think the press has sensationalized recently the issue because they were late to the party.

I do not believe that Wallet is a last-minute holdup on this because I think that would have gotten cleared up back then, one way or another - if indeed Wallet was ever on the table for the Verizon Nexus.

Salt, just my opinions, you know the deal.

You will NOT be able to buy a device that out-specs the GNex in the US and on Verizon until at least April/May. IMO, the only thing that COULD be more desirable is the unannounced Galaxy S3, which you won't see in the US on any carrier until August.

So outdated already? Psh...

FWIW ~~ I've called several VZW's this morning, and they have all said it will be the 15th, and this is based on email info directly from VZW.

I asked a few of them what exactly the email said, and they were kind enough to actually read off the email. Of the 3 guys who I convinced to read their communication email, all 3 read the exact same thing to me.

So, it would seem (like the 9th), the 15th is pretty much a lock.... if it isn't delayed sometime this week, that is.

So what did the e-mail say?

Gotcha so I'll be able to recieve the OTA but it will likely cause an unroot, correct? And if thats the case I just wait for the devs for a few days to come out with the new update? Can you root without having a custom ROM? I like keeping everything look stock and a lot of the ROMs change so much crap around.

Root just switches permissions so users and applications can access the root-level directories. No ROMs or Kernels required. If the OTA breaks root, you just have to go back in and switch the permissions back on.

So, I think I've reached the "Acceptance" stage of the Nexus grief process. I'm actually more upset about having to wait so damn long for the next episode of The Walking Dead than I am about having to wait for the Nexus.

Is everyone caught up or will discussing the most recent episode spoil it for anyone?

And really there is a consensus, it's just not necessarily the truth.

Because you're chasing a moving target. There will always be something better on the horizon. I want this phone because it's a nexus on VZW and it's LTE. I want the ability to easily root and rom the device and not have to fiddle with hacks and locked bootloaders.

Even though waiting until 12/31 would suck, I really don't understand why people wouldn't be willing to wait 2 more weeks, but would be willing to wait 3+ months? Makes no sense to me...but to each his/her own.

Off-topic Walking Dead:

I know, I was really bummed to find out we have to wait until next year for more episodes. GRR!

Before you know it, you've pissed away an entire year by not being able to poo or get off the pot.

Personally speaking, I have been doing this for two cycles now due to the Bionic debacle. At this point, having 4G will be an absolutely massive upgrade for me, regardless of hardware.

No back button?

I must have not noticed that on all of the demo videos... That WILL be weird... I was just going to order it without having played with it, but maybe I should stop by the Verizon store first...

GN has a back button. The nav bar is "back, home, and recent apps". App tray is on the persistent launcher bar, search is already infamous, and settings has a permanent shortcut on the notification pulldown. "Menu" is context sensitive; sometimes appearing on nav bar and sometimes in the app.

Yeah its really just a difference of opinion, some people consider the date as the day the technology is available for incorporation into devices, others like you (and I) are when we can actually get our hands on it. Nov 17th (or Nov 11th, if you want to group the RAZR and Rezound in with this generation of tech (i.e. LTE, dual core, HD (or qHD) screen being the three main hardware specs) is the "birthday" of this generation of phone as far as end user is concerned.

Going by how the Galaxy S2 was, the S3 will be available in Europe in April/May and then once the US carriers decide how they want to bastardize it then we'll get it here in like September.

Long time lurker, first post. I love/hate this forum (love the people and conversation, hate the situation) much like all of you.

I have to say that all of this shadiness and lack of information from VZ has made me start to second guess how good this phone is actually going to be. I actually started to read up on the Rezound since I have a DINC now rooted running MIUI and I love it! A little concerned with the Rezound not being perm-rooted yet though and I wonder is that going to be the norm now where VZ and phone manufacturers lock down their phones to the point devs just don't care to break them and everyone just buys Nexus'? Is that the real draw to the Nexus that it is the first ICS, fully rooted and gets updates straight from Google? Also the camera is getting mixed reviews...fast but pics not great which concerns me because I usually hate the camera on my DINC...especially when it needs a flash.

Maybe all the waiting is making me skeptical...help talk me off the ledge!

The same reason why the Bionic wasn't that exciting when it finally got released. The other day I was just watching TV and remembered that this phone will have face unlock. I'm forgetting all the cool features I will get with this phone because of how long it's been since the phone was announced. It has lost it's magic that it had back in October and I'm sure if it's 2012 it won't seem that spectacular anymore.

Dumb question (This is going to be my first android device).. if the nexus doesn't have an SD slot how can you use Titanium Backup? Is there cloud OR USB support? What is a general backup strategy for devices without external storage support?

It will still be possible to plug it into the computer to transfer files from the phone's internal storage. It will use something called MTP, which will appear in windows as a drive just like it would with USB mass storage. It should be pretty much transparent to people with windows. For mac/linux/etc, it may require some tweaking, but it should work on those as well.
