Help Beginner Questions

Hello,

I just got my SGS2 recently ( international version). It is my first Android smartphone. I have some questions concerning the phone.

1- There are two types of running processes: RUNNING PROCESSES and CACHE RUNNING PROCESSES. What is the difference between these two and what are the running processes ? ( they are not the applications that i am using...)
When i clear the RAM memory the processes comes back... and my ram ysage is always between 420 and 500 / 837 Mb.


2- I saw in an other post that the phone has around 13.5 Gb of interneal storage divided into 1.9 Gb for system storage and the remaining for the user.
I didnt mount an external card yet. So the /sdcard is actually the internal memory and /sdcard/sdcard_external is empty.
When i install an app where does this app goes ? in the 1.9 or the 11.5 ? When i go in the file manager i can see some folders created by the apps but its actually files for the app cache or something like that. So the question is where does the phone store the application "executables " ?


3- when i mount an sd card, some applications that i have downloaded can be transfered to the SD card ( but yet i cant see them in file manager) and some other applications cant be transfere. Why ?


4- The stock video player displays all the video files stored ont the phone...how can i display ONLY my series and movies ?


5- When i close the applications: messages, music, internet " with the back button they dont quit. I need to kill them in the task manager. Is it normal ? ( all the other applications quit by pushing the back button)

Can't really help with your questions except the last one.
This is normal behaviour and nothing to worry about.
You shouldn't need to close anything anyway unless you are having problems, Android manages the RAM and closes things automatically if required.
As for your bad English, well, if you hadn't said anything I would never have guessed that English wasn't your first language.

1) Not sure the difference, but running processes should be for processes that are running real time. RAM seems fine to me, and you don't have to clear RAM. It doesn't actually do much. The only time I use it is when I have problem with some apps closing properly and try to clear it so it won't restart on its on.

2) The memory is divided into 2GB Internal Phone Memory and 11.5GB USB storage memory. When you install small apps (<50MB usually), it goes straight to the 2GB memory. If you install big apps like gameloft games, say 20MB would be in the 2GB internal phone memory and 500MB would be in the 11.5GB USB storage. All "exe" files should be in the 2GB Internal Phone Memory. IF you have an external microSD card, it would be specified as sdcard_external. If you use MovetoSD, then part of the app files that are in the 2GB memory would be moved to the external microSD in the folder Android_secure which is hidden and can be viewed via PC.

3) Refer above last line.

4) Place a nomedia file in the folder you don't want it to display, or add a "." in front of the folder.

1. Running processes include all the active user apps along with background system apps and services. Running cache is a storage or snapshot of accessed data and app components.
Android is not like windows. You will never have zero used ram. Applications and system services by default have allocated ram to improve speed and stability.

2. Correct. SD is the storage space on your system memory. Apps installed are installed to the smaller 1.9 partition.

You will not be able to see where the apps are installed. You will need Root Explorer and root access to see this.

System apps are installed to /system/app
User apps are installed /data/app

Game and app data is stored on storage or external storage.

3. You won't see them without a root explorer. The developer must enable apps to sd option for an application to be transferred to SD.


4. Use QuickPic for media organization. You can select which folder you want to hide or dismiss as part of your collection. Applies to movies too.

5. You should not be killing apps unless they are acting irregularly. I know this sound weird but this is how android works. App killers can create more problems than they solve when used frequently.

I just want to thank you all for your answers. I still have 2 final queestions:

1- When i launch the Camera app, the brightness of the screen increases is it normal ?

2- On my 11,5 Gb partition i have 10,1 Mb used. But when i plug the phone to the pc and i check my files i have only 8 Mb... i tried to display the hiden files on windows but there is nothing.... Where are the 2 Mb remaining ?
