If you've got an unbranded then Samsung has yet to release anything above 2.3.4, including 2.3.5 etc. If you fish around the posts on this forum someone has posted the usual utter junk of an excuse from Samsung. Bottom line though seems to be they couldn't be arsed.
if you cant explain the answer, why give the lad a facetious answer.
android 2.3.5 and 6 have been released by samsung and has been passed out by carriers but for some reason samsung didnt think it was worth the hassle of giving it to unbranded.
Apologies. Not meaning to bitch Slug... Just wanted to know what the OP was getting at. He could at least explain which country, network etc he is on.
Or maybe the problem is he couldn't get Kies to work on his PC. At least that way, advice about flashing can be given if he wanted to use Odin. And Slug, he did mentioned he was already on 2.3.4
I am in Malaysia, and using a network called Maxis. I don't know if its considered unbranded, but I know there is no bloatware in my phone. Also, Malaysian telcos being what they are, they certainly don't have the service to put in bloatware. So I suspect the updates actually comes directly from Samsung via the telcos straight.
I also have a friend who bought it from the shop straight. When I updated, and inform her, she could also update as well. That's also why I suspect updates came straight from Samsung.
In other words, don't have problem with updates from Samsung.
Cheers
PS - I am talking about update to 2.3.6 and not ICS which from previous post, I know Nodders and Andy66 have issues with.
Mmmmm.... O2 have 4.0.3 available via Kies i'm sure.
Make sure you have Kies installed on your computer. Connect your phone and it should tell you if there's an update available. It won't be available 'over the air'.
Those were never released for the generic handsets. Only carrier-branded firmwares received them, which suggests to me that Samsung didn't consider that these minor updates were required.

For the reasons that were laid out in the 3rd and 4th post of this thread. Not sure for the very aggressive posts afterwards from the mod given they answered the q.
Unbranded means hasn't got specific branded software installed, ie. when you switch it on you don't see O2 or Vodafone etc or there are no branded apps on it.

Actually no.... You can install way more than just apps from google play. As long as your phone can support the app, and you can find the .APK file, then you can install it.
For example, I got my PowerAmp not from google play but directly from the developer. Download their .APK file and just installed. There is also Samsung Apps in your phone which gives access to apps as well. A lot of the apps there are available in google play, but sometimes there are special offers where apps that needs to be paid can be gotten for free on Samsung Apps.
Branded just means the telco got his hand onto the firmware first and can put his own stuff in it which you can't remove unless rooted. Hence the term bloatware. Also, if you use the telco supplied phones, it does come cheaper. Its a trade off really.
Is your phone a branded or unbranded since you got it at Tesco? Thought some posters mentioned that Tesco phones are branded CPW.
Weird. I thought when 2.3.6 was released, everyone would have gotten it subject to regional release. If branded UK phones had 2.3.6, that must have meant Samsung already released 2.3.6 to carriers, which meant it must be available (somewhere).
You think carriers can prevent release of 2.3.6 from Samsung?
Simpler for me, either have or don't have and pretty sure the updates are available for everyone regardless of carrier/contract. Telcos here just don't have the expertise to create bloatware so the release goes to eveyone when available from Samsung, contract or not. Or maybe because we skipped 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 that's why had 2.3.6

@Jamiee411
Here is a short guide for you on how to get 2.3.6 for your phone
I am making the assumptions here.
1. You are aware of how to flash ROMs via ODIN.
2. You do not mind voiding your warranty.
Download the following firmware package and flash via odin: XWKL1 Android 2.3.6
If you are prompted for password use intratech@XDA
It is a Frankenstein firmware package, i.e. it is a 2.3.6 firmware made from individual parts of various packages.
This package has: PDA: XWKL1| Modem/phone: XXKL1| CSC: XEUKH2
credits go to intratech of xda for the compiled package.
Post if you need further help in this regard.
Hope this helps you out.
