MBA student looking for an Android related dissertation topic

Hi everyone!

Im currently going to school at Durham Business School in the UK, and Im trying to figure out a dissertation topic.. 15000 words worth.

Im not quite sure how to narrow it down, but I want to write a dissertation around Android (and it's superiority to apple) but Im not quite sure where concentrate.

Any ideas??

For an MBA, you could look a the financial element of it. Apple is pushing the iPhone with the goal of selling hardware. Google is pushing Android with the hopes of selling ads. They are completely different business strategies and make a huge difference in how both companies present their products.

I like your take on it! But, what hardware is Apple trying to push? The sale of just the phone? Parts? I guess I have not come across this information. Apple also makes hella cash off of the apps, since you have to pay for a lot more of them than with Android..

Im all ears. I really want to do a dissertation on Android because I am a user of it and a believer.

Apple is pushing the phone, the tablet, the iPod, etc.... That's where they make all their money. They are essentially a hardware company.

Ah I get it now! Since Android is on lots of different brands of phones, than hardware sales isn't their driver. Got it. this is very intriguing.

Another possible area is the patenting and copying of intellectual property. Samsung and Apple have been going back and forth suing each other, so looking into what effect this has on business and the dissemination of innovation could be another interesting route to take. Thoughts on that?

You can do a take on that and also Google's Acquisition of Motorola Mobility and what that meant for Android.

You can also look at the partnership that Google created with the various OEMs and how adopting Android has pull various companies from a small tech company to a competitor (HTC), allow another to again dominate on the phone market (Samsung) and got a company from going bankrupt (Motorola). If you go this route, I would also suggest you look at Microsoft Window phones and their OEMs partnership with Nokia and HTC. You can compare the difference between an open source software vs a closed one. On Apple side, you can look at the their partnership with companies that build their parts: Foxconn, Samsung and LG.

Google is closing in on making a billion US dollars per year on Android. It dominates the smartphone market by a good margin, and it's partners are making quite a bit on hardware.

It's superiority to Apple comes down to one simple factor - Android is all about choice.

Consumers can access advanced smartphone features on a wide range of hardware, covering all price points and hardware features, and it represents a class of operating system software, customized by each hardware manufacturer to add features and therefore perceived value.

Until this last year, there was a single iPhone. Now there are a line of three, courtesy of ongoing production of two older models at reduced prices.

Beware of app sale comparisons. Many of the must-have Apple app functions are built in to Android for free.

Choice is, without a doubt, the major driver for Android success. Add to that that the range of choices include all popular user demands in a smartphone included right out of the box. It's nearly an irresistible choice as either an impulse purchase or a planned personal communications and computing investment.

And smartphones are outselling PCs.

Anyway, maybe some of that can be useful to you.

Research their different business models; and then decide your conclusion.

Going in to a dissertation with your conclusion already written is a bad idea.

But yahoo doesn't have a Google apps competitor that I'm aware of.

Nor will they ever, as Google Play dominates the growing apps market on android.

I am a devoted yahoo user, but I have been frustrated with my new phone, because Google is dominating that devise.

I'm extremely confused. Yahoo has never had a Google Apps competitor, nor have they ever expressed any interest in one. I don't get how Google could put Yahoo out of business. They don't directly compete in anything that I can think of. Yahoo has never tried an app store nor would it make any sense at all for them to do so. I'm not sure why you mention the app store at all.

Also, why would you be surprised that a device running a Google OS would have heavy Google integration?
