Need help convincing parents to get me an N1

Oh I understand. The masses however, do not. You make a good point regarding using the phone as a USB stick, but that doesn't describe the experience in general. That's just one thing (and I agree, it's stupid). Apple has made a fortune (and revived their name, which came close to dying) by creating closed, controlled systems that allow people to get what they generally want out of products without needing tutorials and expert help to use them. Is that for everyone? Absolutely not.. but it is for most people.

I'll use Myspace as an example. Myspace allowed you to customize "anything" to your hearts content, and what you ended up with was a bloated, slow, ugly, service that's dying it's rightful death.

I don't want to argue my point too far, because I'm not an Apple fanboy. I'm game for anything, and I'm still using my Nexus One as my main phone.. I just thought it was fair to point out that I do carry it around with me, because the Nexus is good, but not great.

But the things I love to do on my iPhone (Play great games, like Final Fantasy, Words with Friends, etc do not exist on the Nexus. The battery drains like crazy on the phone, especially compared to my 3GS and that leaves me at a point where I need to go look online and find out what hidden things need to be turned on or off. Multi-tasking, while nice in some situations can be a burden. I need to get a task manager, set rules, close apps often, or run the risk of a slower, hotter, less lasting phone). I suppose in the end it comes down to personal preference, and I wouldn't make a final choice at this point, but I think to dismiss the 3GS over the Nexus given Androids early state is a bit premature.

I don't think you understand what "crippled" means. For me? Crippled is the inability to customize anything, tether, install third-party apps, multi-task, and much more out of the box. The iPhone can't even be used as a giant USB stick. How moronic is that?

If by "GOOD" you mean "my own phone treats me like I'm a five-year-old child," then sure. Not everyone enjoys being treated that way, though.

I came from an iPhone 3G. I have had a Nexus One after shipping a week after the release date.

Would I go back to iPhone? No. Why? Well because I like the customisation of the N1 - even without rooting it walks all over the iPhone in terms of what you can do with it.

You can make the phone your own and you don't have to plug it into iTunes to do it. I love widgets, love the fact that I can have a one line news headlines widget with pictures, I can quickly see what my friends are saying on Facebook with a swipe of the screen. I can change screen brightness, wi-fi, Bluetooth all with widgets without having to go into settings and find the damn things and then having to press that hideous home (terminate all) button to get back to the home screen.

Yes, iPhone 4 may well come out in the summer, but Android and especially Google's constant development phone the Nexus One will not be left behind for long if at all. And if my theory of Apple and the way they update their phone(s) is correct then the iPhone will only see some small feature additions which probably should have been available for years anyway.

Other things, as you already say the Nexus One is cheaper, it has more raw power, the screen is excellent, it has expandable memory, removable battery, you can change the SIM without having to find something to shove into a small hole on the top of the phone. It is also in my opinion, a much more pleasing design than a pure plastic slab with an ugly silver bezel around the side.

Negatives? Well Android isn't quite there in terms of games in the Market. I don't play many anyway as I find that all touchscreen devices are a little bit rubbish for games. Some people have questioned the build quality of the N1 but I have seen no issues. Other apps have always covered what I wanted and the fact that you can find apps to change your daily experience of the phone is a big positive - replacement SMS app, clocks, news feeds, social networking...

There's the signal issue but since O2 upgraded the mast in my area the N1 gets flawless reception and certainly no worse than the iPhone and my BB in the UK (although I think our networks are better than T-Mobile in the USA, apart from T-Mobile UK that is).

Overall, go for the Nexus One and enjoy your iPhone owning friends asking you what it is and can they have a go?!

Sure it does. If I don't like the iPhone's default keyboard, can I replace it with Swype? No? If I don't like Safari, can I put Opera Mini on it? No? And so on. And I think the icon grids look like shit, personally. Boring.

I'll use Myspace as an example. Myspace allowed you to customize "anything" to your hearts content, and what you ended up with was a bloated, slow, ugly, service that's dying it's rightful death.

Hi, HTML and Javascript can be used to customize websites to your heart's content and some people end up with bloated, slow, ugly websites that need to die. You'd be an extra class of silly to think HTML and Javascript need to be shunned forever.

But the things I love to do on my iPhone (Play great games, like Final Fantasy, Words with Friends, etc do not exist on the Nexus.

Not everyone is into handheld gaming. If the iPhone can run Mass Effect 2 and let me raid on WoW, call me. Until then, it's not a priority for many people.

The battery drains like crazy on the phone, especially compared to my 3GS and that leaves me at a point where I need to go look online and find out what hidden things need to be turned on or off.

That's hilarious, because the last time I handled a 3GS, it sucked down battery like a lady of negotiable affections in a back alley. And that was even without doing anything--I was just poking around those dull icon grids, barely launching an app. The battery percentage just dropped by the second. You need to find out... hidden things to turn on or off? Try the power control widget. It's, I don't know, common sense that turning down screen brightness and turning off GPS etc would tax the battery less. But hey, oh my god, using a complex, powerful device requires thinking and an elementary understanding of how it functions! The horror, the horror.

Huh? Inactive apps don't use CPU cycles. They take up RAM, but don't make your device run hotter. As someone who's been using the N1 since late January and has experimented with multiple ROMs and kernels, the only time mine gets warmer is when it's being charged (duh) or when I've used it extensively. What do you know, my PC's temperature rises too after a while, especially if I've been gaming. I'll just remove the GPU and restrict my use to word processing. Gosh, using my PC has just gotten so much simpler! Brb, getting a lobotomy.

Oh goodness, a sixteen year old getting a smart phone? In my days we didn't even get cellphones until we entered college!

I've seen a kid that had to be around 10 with a cell phone. You could tell by his attitude he was spoiled too. But I do think once someone can drive they should get cell phones (at least a pay as you go for emergencies). That's when my sister and I did.

Also, I don't see why you have to convince your parents to pay less.

well thats my parents. they are all apple junkies so they think that an extra $70 to get an iphone is more than worth it. i disagree with them. we've got so many apple products at our house that its not even funny. just guessing but its around 2 iphones (about to be 3 thanks to my bro), 4 macs (i hate them, only good because they don't get viruses), 2 ipods each so yea. my parents have an affection for anything apple which i dislike about them.

He was using the word crippled in a different context. He is referring to Android's puny App Market (30,000) compared to Apple Appstore (170,000). Plus... I have said it before... there are many cross platform apps that appear on iPhone and Android... but USUALLY the iPhone version of those apps are better / have more features / more polished.

Ebay... more polished and organized layout.
Yelp... read only on Android ... write reviews on iPhone
Skype... no data calling on Android ... iPhone version is full featured

But even the look of many apps are just cleaner and polished on iPhone. For all of the crap people give Apple about the app approval process, then is something to be said about QUALITY CONTROL.

Haha, I've met plenty of people like your parents... although two of them for good reason--they work at the Apple Store and was brainwashed. Unfortunately, I've found that logic and facts do not work in your favor with these type of people.

For what reason exactly would a sixteen year old need a high-end smartphone?
Don't you work at a cell phone store? Somehow, I don't think your reason and the teen's reason are too far apart.

Winters37: If your mom is such a huge Apple fanatic, then why is she set on purchasing you a 3GS when the new version is only ~2 months away? If I were you, I would hold off on a purchase until the new iPhone's details are released and then make my decision. If you can't convince her to get you the N1, you can at least force a delay.

I can't empathize because my parents would never have bought me anything, ever. Can't say I'd turn down a free phone, though.

Finally, this thread seems like troll bait.

Lol, here you go again. Pa-the-tic. No, I don't work at a cellphone store. Are you the kind of person who thinks his yearly income determines his worth as a human being or something?

And only absolute, utter tools need to put in their internet forum sig that they're an Ivy League student (if that's even real to start with). Not that a law degree's anything to be proud of, considering that the majority of lawyers are nothing more than a leech on society and worthless wastes of oxygen.

My point still stands. You want to talk about a child's need of a smartphone but at the same time, you have no need for it as well. Glass house, rocks, and all that.

Actually, maybe you do need a smartphone. After all, how else do you total 713 posts in two months?

If youre old enough for a smartphone, n1, Droid, iPhone or other, your certainly old enough to do your own research.

Grainysand, as for your ignorant statement about lawyers, perhaps you should think before you spew some idiotic gibberish out. You may not like when a lawyer does his job(or when yours doesn't, and you lose a case), but there is a ton of work that they do for very little to no money at all, defending those wrongly accused and prosecuting those rightly so. Perhaps you'd like to just get rid of the last few hundred years of law though, and if you're accused of stealing, the police will simply declare you guilty and chop off your hand.

This thread is fail. I hope it gets locked.

If you want a N1 why dont you do it the old fashioned way and get a job? Then you are beholden to no one and will actually appreciate what you have earned and dont need to convince anyone about anything. I am probably one of the oldest people here on this forum based on the reading I have done and I hope you understand that I am not baiting you but offering this as an honest suggestion.

I'm 15 and I have it. Now before you flame me hear me out on why I need the nexus one.

-I'm starting to to music gigs a tad bit more and it's getting harder to organize it. Android does.
-I belong with the nerds. Mine is rooted with the desire rom and a bunch of other cool things I've done with it. The snapdragon processor helps satisfy my nerdy needs :p
-I like apps. Hate apple and their insanity. Android market? Yes please.
Etc etc.

Your right. I should get a razr instead. Lol naa. Though the cliq is a nice t-mobile phone I will admit.

I got mine half of my Christmas money and half of working gigs and yardwork and at my dad's office. Just get a job. However if your not a huge nerd, I don't think the n1 is for you. I'd assume your on ATT so get the Backflip. It has everything a teenager could ever want IMO.

if you want a Nexus One, your parents should make you pay at least half of it... make you appreciate it that much more...

are you gonna ask for an EVO 4G when that gets released too?
He didn't say he was forcing his parents to buy it for me. That was a douche comment.

Just tell them the Android Market is growing so we will have more apps in no time. We have more customizable interfaces and everything is cheaper.

Oh my, so defensive. Let me guess: over-privileged kid whose cars, toys and college fees were paid for by parents? Because otherwise you wouldn't have missed the point so squarely.

Keep on with that phone store thing, though. It's amusingly off the mark.
