Root Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo V 4G ROMs/Kernels using fastboot

First, I want to say thanks to everyone who has made this root possible. You rock!
I have gotten to the point where I am going to flash the rom.
I go to "Choose Zip"
I go to "select roms"
I pick the rom I want to flash
and it brings me to what looks to be the list of files in the zip.

It won't just let me choose the file it always opens a system folder apparently?
How can I fix this? Was it something in how I downloaded the file and put it on the sd card? Is there a way I can take that file out of the sd card and put it in again if so?
If so I have my phone plugged into the computer and the video specifically states NOT to unplug the phone.

*EDIT*
I somehow did not have he folder still zipped (Not sure when that happened!) So I am about to try again

*EDIT #2*
I'm rooted and ready to go with the stock rom and all that good stuff.
I want to thank you all again. This means the world to me because with a rooted device I can now change the font size a bit so I can actually see my phone (having only partial vision with this phone makes it pretty much a pain in the ass to do anything lol.)

Thanks in advance!

Hi - I really appreciate you posting this - however, I have a problem with this step, in that I do not know the name of my HTC's native ROM's zip file:

2) Go back and now go to Install Zip.

A) Choose Zip
B) Go to the folder ROMs/
C) Select the ROM you want to flash (the stock ROM or SU patch for example)
D) If you're flashing another kernel, you would find your kernel and by selecting Choose Zip and finding the kernel file. The kernel must be selected AFTER the ROM is selected, or else the kernel built into the ROM will overwrite the kernel you want to flash.
E) Check 'Reboot After Successful Flash' - this is just a nice feature of TWRP that makes it so you don't have to pay attention to the flashing process.
F) Flash Zips Now

If it has a standard name, can you or someone please tell me where to find it?

Thanks!

Rob

I followed this guide to a T, and kept on coming up with a bootloop problem.
After searching for answers for hours, I finally tried a different recovery.
While I can not say for sure something is wrong with the one included in the guide, I can say once I used a different recover it worked!

Here's what I used:
Clockworkmod Recovery 6.0.1.4

Just FYI, since people keep asking about this, I went ahead and just edited the op to link to my dropbox instead, so now there is a working link in the op!
Good :)

i have to mention that i had a hard time trying to connect to HTC Dev account, it kept loggin me out, after almost an hour of trying different browsers with any luck, i found a thread where people was having same issues and someone suggested that if the PC was connected from a router, to disconnect modem from router and connect the modem directly to the computer and try again, that's what i did, i connected the modem ethernet cable straight to my computer and tried loggin in with opera, and it worked.

i mention this just in case others run to this issue, they have an idea what to do, if they are using the pc via a router connection.

thanks for the HTC Sync mirror Brian706.

Thanks for the guide! and, thanks for the video! I used both and successfully unlocked and rooted my new phone. It was not without a pucker moment or two, but found answers in this forum. It was a little easier than my wildfire I did last year. I downloaded Root Checker and it verified root access. Once completed, I used Titanium Backup to backup and deleted some of the VM bloatware already. So, I guess I am good to go, but still have a question or two-

* Following the guide, I flashed the twrp 1.1.1... it worked. Is there a newer version? and, do I need it? (I thought I saw a 2.x.x version in this thread, but too late as I already did 1.1.1- or is it too late?)
* I flashed stock rom, aka, jmzStock_VM_shooter_Odex.zip and it worked... yesterday, I was seeing an OTA system update on my phone was needed. This happened on my wildfire, too, and just ignored it. I assume that if I see an OTA, I should just ignore it?? I don't see it today, but it was there yesterday?
* On my wildfire, I had cwm recovery and then I was able to use ROM Manager app. Can I download and use ROM Manager app even though I have twrp? something tells me, I should just stick to the guide ;-)

GooManager has an option built in to install the latest TWRP. 'Install OpenRecoveryScript' or something along those lines. Not sure if GooManager is included in that rom or not though.

Ignore OTA updates. I didn't think you we're suppose to be able to see them on custom roms in the first place though...

ROM Manager is a pile of dung. Ever since the Optimus V days, and seeing it ruin countless people's phones, while the developer refused to do anything, I've decided that that app can go **** itself.

Thanks- I checked out goo manager and it looks like I will use that one- thanks for recommendation. Downloaded from app store and watched video- looks straightforward. I also saw the [ROM] Harmonia 3.17 forum and will jump over there for other questions I have with that process...

One more thing though- from the guide- it is optional to install 4EXT... this functionality sounds a lot like goo manager- is it? would I be ok with goo manager?

Also, do I need cyanogen and/or clockworkmod ?

The 4ext app is a front end of sorts for 4ext recovery. Use 4ext if you're s-on. Otherwise I find it rather pointless.
Cyanogen is a rom. Clockworkmod is another recovery. So you have either 4ext, twrp, or cwm. Can't combine them. Not sure how cwm is on this phone. Most use either twrp or 4ext.
Goo Manager itself isn't really necessary either. I just use it for downloading roms. Reboot into recovery to do everything else.

Thanks for the clarifications. I am S-ON- don't see a real need for S-OFF (yet)... from more reading, looks like twrp is what is used frequently. And, with Goo manager, I can flash the newer twrp 2.3 (the guide used twrp 1.x). And, with the video that was with goo manager, and your answers, I feel like I am good to go.

I wouldn't call 4EXT "pointless".

Read this post and the ones that are linked from that to get some idea of the differences between 4EXT and TWRP, and the http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/663486-twrp-2-3-htc-evo-3d.htmlthis thread on this forum to see that there are some issues with TWRP 2.3.3.0 if you are not running the stock 1.57 or JBear 1.57.5757 bootloader, but 4EXT doesn't seem to be affected by what hboot installed.

I use 4EXT on my Evo 3D but they are both good recoveries and it's best to be familiar with TWRP even if you don't use it since some devices that TWRP supports aren't supported by 4EXT yet.

That means you're not running the command from the right directory. Open a fresh command prompt and type cd c:\sdk-tools assuming you extracted the zip directly to your c: hard drive. Then type adb reboot bootloader.

I followed the guide word for word extracted it exactly how it says and typed cd c:\sdk-tools that works but once I type adb reboot bootloader I get the same error could it be a problem with the drivers for the phone?

Hmm. The error makes it sound like adb doesn't exist in the directory the command is being typed in. Is it possible that it got extracted in a slightly different location? I'm not trying to say you didn't follow directions, that's just what the error sounds like. Are you on Windows 7? If so, browse to the folder that contains adb and fastboot. Hold shift and right click that folder and hit open command Window here. That should open it in the right directory. :/
