How do I delete a phone contact created by WhatsApp?

I have a contact I wanted to delete from my phonebook permanently. I deleted the main entry but there is a linked WhatsApp entry which is still there (when you select "Search" on the "People" application). The WhatsApp application itself has removed the contact from the WhatsApp contact list and I have sync'd the WhatsApp contacts through Android Sync. But the contact is still there. When I press "Menu" on it, it just gives the options to "Link" or "Send contact". Is there any way to delete the contact completely? I really want this girl's number completely wiped off my phone!

Had the same problem, really annoying, but a pretty easy fix.
1. Uninstall Wahtsapp
2. Check if its removed from People (mine was removed)
3. I restarted just for good measure
4. Re installed whatsapp (I personally didn't restore the old chats)

So really, when in doubt, uninstall and re install

Hi,

You may have stored the contact (back in day) by providing a email address in stead of locally (when you add a contact you get a option to select a email address). In that case it doesn't matter if you delete the contact from your phone, reinstall whatsapp or buy another phone. Whatsapp apparently syncs those contacts from your provided email address as well. In that case (for example: example@gmail.com) go to google.com/contacts, log in, on the left browse through your contact (other contacts etc). Find, select and delete the person. This should work. Steps:

1 Delete contact from phone;
2 Delete contact from provide email address;
3 Go to settings > apps > whatsapp > delete data;
4 Open whatsapp en walk through the standard steps.

Hope this helps.

How do I delete a phone contact created by WhatsApp?

I also had the same problem. I googled the android but unfortunately did not find satisfactory solution. Than I tried as mentioned below and it is successful. Please follow exactly the same. It is on Samsung Galaxy Young. I am sure on all android devices must be the same procedure.

1- Delete the contact (you want to remove) from your main contact list.
2- Make sure it is no more there (in your main contact list).
3- Close the main list and go to the main home screen.
4- Now open WhatsApp by tapping the WhatsApp icon.
5- Check the contact list in your WhatsApp contact list. Make sure it is still there.
6- Now close it and go to your main Home screen.
7- Go to settings > Applications >Manage Applications >WhatsApp > Clear data.
8- Now it will alert you

“All of this application’s data will be deleted, including all files, settings, accounts, databases, etc.”

9- At this point you would be afraid and might not proceed further but don’t be afraid. Just press "OK" button.
10- Remember “Do not uninstall the application” once everything is done. It will ask you your mobile number to re-enter. Just fill in the right number and you will get back all your messages and contacts you had in your history except this contact you had to remove.
11- Now to re-assure the mentioned contact is no more in your WhatsApp contact list, just check the contact list.
12- I am more than 100% sure your problem must have been solved.

N.B. Just pray for me and everybody who wants the world problem-free.

Ok All,

So here's a quicker, safer and thus more efficient solution.

Step 1:
Delete the unwanted contact from your phone/contact application.

Step 2:
Then open your WhatsApp Application.
Then in your main menu, select the 'Settings' option, then the after 'Contacts'option and then tick/untick the "Show all contacts" option. DO NOT use the immediate 'Contact' menu option in the main menu!

Use the menu options as illustrated below:
Menu -> Settings -> Contacts tick/untick the "Show all contacts" option.

After it is done, you should get a pop up notification saying "Contacts have been updated". click ok!
And there you have it!!

Step 3:
Thank me later :)

Note: You may go back to tick/untick the "Show all contacts" option to match your actual preference. Ticking/Unticking it in Step 2 was ONLY to FORCE the WhatsApp application to refresh your contact list!
Also, This solution was tested on a Samsung Galaxy SIII mini running Android 4.1.2. However, this solution (or very similar approaches) should cut across several Android versions.

cheers!

Still my problem hasn't been solved?!?!?

I used method 1, the thing about it was that the box was ALREADY unticked. So I ticked it. It said contacts updated. Then I unticked it. It said contacts updated! And whola! My unwanted contact was REMOVED. I take that back. The name was removed, but the number, despite me deleting it from my contacts is STILL there. Sorta like the death star in ID 4 movie with Will Smith.
Thanks for the advice!!!

If you go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings
Once you do that it will put the phone into setup mode with iPhone Data Eraser and everything will be delete from the phone and they won't be able to get your information back.
In order to delete all contacts form iPhone, you have them syncing with another source (gmail, windows contacts, Yahoo, etc.) then in iTunes, select your iPhone under devices (left side), go to Info (top), deselect "Sync contacts with".

When you do this, it will ask you to remove your contacts or not. Click on "Remove Contacts", and then Apply (botton right).

If you don't have your contacts sync'd, then you can either setup a temporary sync to what service you have access to and then do the above, or do them one at a time.

I hate bringing up old posts but this us found on google and. Iwant to make sure people can do this.

1. Go to contact in android app.
2. Go to menu and select Separate
3. This will separate all the merged accounts.
4. Delete the contact whatsapp with the wrong number or info.
5. Go back into contact. Hit menu and select merge and merge any other contact info back.

This is simple and also doesnt erase any data.

There is no need to use an application because the iOS is powered with a function which allows you to remove the content of your phone. Go to Settings > General > Reset and select Erase all Content and Settings.

It's kind of interesting to see a post from 2011 back in the Android Discussions page. It's an old post, but I will still try to answer it.

  • If you've deleted the original contact and the WhatsApp contact is not removed from the directory, then Rebooting the Smartphone will immediately remove the WhatsApp contact from the Directory. If you have that WhatsApp contact in the recent calls list, then you have to delete the Recent Calls list.

  • Also, Erasing the Data of the Whatsapp is an effective solution. Just go to "Settings> Apps > WhatsApp > Clear Data" and you are done.

  • If this doesn't work for you, then just Refresh the Contact list within the WhatsApp. Just open the WhatsApp > Contacts> and then refresh it. It will disappear immediately.

Deleting contacts

WhatsApp quickly and easily recognizes which of your contacts are using WhatsApp by accessing your phone's address book. To delete a contact, simply delete their phone number from your phone's address book:

Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats tab.
Tap the new chat icon > Tap the contact > Tap the name at the top of the chat screen.
Tap the Menu Button > View in address book > Menu Button > Delete.

Then, refresh your WhatsApp contacts by opening WhatsApp > Tap the new chat icon > Menu Button > Refresh.
