help with just about everything on my Eris

I am just needing help with everything. I'm trying to go through these threads and nothing is making sense. I was a long time bb user and they seemed so much easier than this phone.

Problem #1: When I hit the home button it used to ask if I wanted to go to the home screen or the HTC sense now it doesn't ask, how do I get it to ask again?

Problem #2: Which is better to use the home screen or HTC sense? Why?

Problem #3: I see that there is a new upgrade but when I go to the system upgrade it tells me my system is up to date? It currently reads V 1.5.

I just wish I had a manual that I can just sit down and read and a tutorial to show me all the advantages of this phone over my bb.

Any help is greatly appreciated Thank you

1. I'm not 100% sure, but it may have just been setting the default to Sense versus the stock Android Home. Someone else may know for sure. I guess mine never prompted an option for that button, but I never tried changing my home default.

2. Some people like the plain Android Home because it requires less resources than Sense. But Sense gives 7 home screens, which some people enjoy. The default on the phone is HTC Sense, and I believe it will run no matter what unless you forcibly close it.

3. When you see upgrades in the notification area they are typically for apps. Press and hold on the notification bar, then flick your finger downward to open the window (or just press the Menu hard key, and the Notifications option.) There you will see the apps that are available to upgrade, and a click on each will take you to the download area.

#1. Download the app Home Switcher. Makes it easy to switch between Home, Sense, etc.

#2. Sense is nice with all the different HTC apps and the extra screens, but I'm running Home now because battery life is a lot better for me. But this is purely a personal preference thing.

#3. Look at the sticky for instructions on how to upgrade to the newest 2.1. But many will tell you to either wait for the OTA (Over the Air) update, or root since you would have the option to go back to 1.5.

Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Go into either Home or HTC Sense, depending on which you are using and click "Clear Defaults"

*If you see the up arrow, then phone, then + on the bottom of your screen, you are using Sense. If you only have the app drawer handle on the bottom you are using home.

Problem #2: Which is better to use the home screen or HTC sense? Why?

Depends on who you ask. Sense looks better to most, Home performs better to most.

Problem #3: I see that there is a new upgrade but when I go to the system upgrade it tells me my system is up to date? It currently reads V 1.5.

Is there a system upgrade or an app upgrade. A system upgrade would be very obvious. Go into the Market, then "My Downloads" and see if there is an upgrade for any of your apps.

*I may have misunderstood your question ... Ttran may have the answer your looking for.

1. Go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>HTC Sense>Clear Defaults, now click the home button and it should ask again, if you want to set Home as your default, check the box that says "use as default for this action" and then select home.

2. It is completely up to your personal preference. I, personally, love Sense and think it makes life much easier, but I know people that swear by Home too.

3. Is the upgrade in your notification bar? If show, just drag down from the top of the screen and click on the the notification of the upgrade. I would bet it will open your Market and it is nothing more than an upgrade to an app that you have downloaded not a system update.

4. Google HTC Eris user manual, they're out there, they're huge, but they're out there.

1) You have either Home (vanilla Android) or HTC Sense set as your default home. Go to Setting--> Applications--> Manage Applications and find either Home or HTC Sense (not sure which you're using) and "clear defaults". You could also download Home Switcher from the Market which makes switching between the two (or others ) simple.

2) This is preference. HTC Sense has it's own widgets and 7 screens. Home is just the vanilla Android home screen. It is limited to 3 screens and doesn't have the HTC widgets. Some argue that Home runs slightly smoother. There are other Home applications you can download (Helix, Sweeter Home, dxTop etc.)

3) The upgrade is a leaked version. The newest version is not yet officially available from Verizon which is why your phone shows that it is up to date. Once Verizon releases the Over The Air (OTA) update it will be available to download to your phone. In the meantime you can upgrade to the leak if you feel the need to have 2.1
