Lately, I have a weird icon on my HTC Hero that I have never seen before.

Above the bars there is a triangle. The Hero manual does not address this icon. It seems to be completely undocumented.

Although the manual says that an "R" in this area means your phone is in "roam mode", I believe my phone uses a triangle instead. In any case, my phone says that it is in digital roam mode. I have no idea why it seems to be stuck in this mode. I have rebooted it several times and, each time, it always goes into digital roam mode.

I don't think it's full fledged roaming... I remember my Nokia and Moto phones back in the day using a semi-solid triangle to notify that you're in Extended Area. Usually this is part of a nationwide calling plan... if I remember correctly, it means that you're piggy-backing on another provider's network at no cost based on your plan.

This happened frequently when I had Alltel, years before Verizon bought them. I used VZW network more in my city and state than I did Alltel's, but no charge.

Hope this helps. See if there's any overages on your next bill... or call customer service if you're worried.
