Root Moto Droid rooted or Eris rooted

Currently I have an Eris with v3 Leak meaning I can't root. But my wife loves my phone so I plan on giving her mine and either getting another eris and rooting or a Moto Droid and rooting. I've been trying to read up on the Droid and the different ROMS available and have some questions.

First I want to make a few things clear:

1. This IS NOT a phone comparison.
2. The Incredilble IS NOT an option since it can't be rooted and I don't want to spend $200 on it.
3. I'm looking for WELL INFORMED OPINIONS, if you don't have one keep moving there is nothing to see here.

I post often, typically in the eris forum, helping others. This is the first time I've asked for help on a forum. I'm hoping for respectful comments please, thanks.

Finally to my questions:

1. How is the dev support on the Droid? From what I've seen both the Eris and the Droid have good devs but it appears to me that the Eris has more devs producing great products.

2. How are the ROMS? Once again it just appears to me from my reading that the ROMS for the Eris seem a little more stable than the Droid in reference to 2.1.

To be fair I've obviously done a lot more reading on the Eris which is why I'm looking for well informed opinions from Droid owners that way I can make a well informed decision. Thanks for all your help.

Well I can't really give you a comparison to the Eris community because I've never really looked into the Eris. However I can tell you that in my experience the devs for the Droid community are top notch. I have never really had any problems with any of the ROMs that I've run and each and every update to a ROM seems to bring us more and more goodies.

Again I can't compare what you guys have on the Eris but IMHO the Droid ROM community is extreamly supportive.

Yeah and that's my problem, my exposure has been more with the Eris. And I agree from what I've seen the devs are very supportive, it just seems that I see more happening on the Eris side but due to my exposure (or lack thereof) I'm wondering what Droid owners think of the products coming out for their phones.

honestly I dont know much about the eris dev scene but why would you buy a handset that is just about at end of life? Eris hardware is really outdated in comparison to the droid or the incredible. If I were you I would either get a droid or wait for the incredible to get rooted.

There really isn't any comparison between the two...the Droid has a much larger, much more supported, and much more varied selection of ROMS, all of them having their own advantages. The selection is amazing and you'd definitely be able to find something that interests you.

The reason I'm having a hard time with the decision is because It just seems to me that the Droid ROMS being used have quite a bit of bugs as compared to the Eris ROMS. I know the Eris is outdated hardware wise but I've been relatively happy with it, but obviously I would like to get better hardware hence my interest in the droid. I'm really trying to get feedback from Droid owners that have rooted and see what if any issues they are having with the latest ROMS, for example I was reading somewhere that many were having problems with MMS messaging.

I've been looking around quite a bit but haven't found much other than Bugless Beast and a few others. But that is the kind of feedback I'm looking for, thanks. Truth be told I would like to get the Moto Droid I just want to make sure I'm going into the decision well informed.

I run cyanogenmod most of the time and have almost zero problems. Usually if I have issues its cause I am using a test build and not a final. AFAIK all MMS issues are a thing of the past those issues have been fixed for awhile

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately you know how it goes on reading threads it's mostly people complaining about something or another which is probably why I'm so apprehensive.

I run NexBeast on my rooted Droid and I have never encountered a single bug. That's not to say you won't, but I haven't. But anytime I've had a question or concern I posted on this forum and my question was answered by the dev (Fabolous will respond to most any post concerning NexBeast) or someone with extensive knowledge or experience in the area. I'm not saying you won't get that with Eris, but you WILL get that with a Droid.

IMHO most of the issues and complaints you read about are due to users switching ROMs without wiping data/cache/system etc. Most of the time if you are going from say CM 5.0.6.1 to 5.0.6.2 you don't need to wipe, but I do every time and think you should after you have upgraded a few versions. Now if you are switching to a completely different devs ROM you must wipe the phone. A lot of stuff gets left behind in the system and starts messing up. I literally have never had an issue just by wiping /boot/data/cache/system each time. With the backup programs out all you really have to do is set up email again, reinstall apps and apply any theme you had on.

With Rom Manager compiled with all of the latest ROMs and a variety of themes and kernels, I would have to say that the dev support and responses are top-notch.

Not only is the dev community huge and very supportive, but one of the biggest things that I don't see here is the fact that we have RSD Lite, which is the program that Motorola uses to flash the phone's firmware.

This means two things:
1) If you screw up your phone, you didn't really screw it up! Even if you can't get into recovery, all you have to be able to do is get into the bootloader, an extremely basic piece of software (I don't think we've ever had someone here truly "brick" their phone), plug the phone into the computer, and use RSD Lite to flash back to stock firmware.
2) Your Eris is now stuck at an unrooted 2.1 leak. This can't happen with the Droid. If your Droid comes with 2.1, which can't be rooted with a simple update.zip, you can always flash back to 2.0.1, which can be rooted with update.zip, add your custom recovery, and apply a 2.1-based ROM. This also lets you put the phone back into its unrooted state before sending it in for servicing so it looks like you never did anything.

I saw over on the Eris root forum that they have a ROM OC'd to 710Mhz
Seriously, it's dated hardware, and if it locks you into a 1-2 year contract, I'd just go for the latest and greatest.

I started out with the Eris, went with the leak when it first came out, then got a refurb eris and rooted it. played with that for a while, but then eventually sold it and got me a droid. the only thing I prefered with the eris was the size. after going to the Droid, and reading up in here on, now running NexBeast. great ROM. and TONS of support.... as far as other development. there is a lot more devs for the droid than there are for the eris, blazing fast updates for it. If an option can posibly work on a Moto Droid, there is a Rom with that option in it. The Eris does trail on available ROMS if you look deeper that just this forum. Not being critical at all, its just the simple fact that the Droid has been rooted for a longer time, and is a more popular phone. IMHO, go with the Moto Droid. you can get over the form factor if that bugs ya..... hope this helps.

I'm of the opinion that no phone compares to a rooted Droid. Anyone willing to root needs a Droid. And I know you said the Droid Incredible wasn't an option, but do consider that it probably won't be long, and even a stock DI will definitely be a better option than a rooted Droid Eris.

Agree 100% with you on that, I love the fact that you have a safety net.

Let's not forget that the Droid is "supposed" to have full flash support soon...that will never happen for the Eris.

I'll put it this way, while the Incredible may be a step up in hardware (highly debatable IMO), I would not trade up for it because of how well (and fast mind you) the Droid runs with some of the custom ROMs. NexBeast is an optimized version of Bugless Beast and there is usually around 70-90 Megs of RAM free at any given time (depending on what is running obviously). There could be 1,000 different ROMs for the Droid but IMO, it comes down to just two...Bugless Beast (and it's spin-offs like NexBeast which I am running and love) and CyanogenMod (which is the only other ROM I switch to for any decent length of time). Both are incredible (no pun intended ) ROMs and while BB is the fastest, CM has some really cool optimizations that you won't find on any other ROM.

Both are supported extremely well...I don't know what else you could want
