Help Google Play Services consumes all memory

This is really making me wary of buying another android device. Now, along with myself and my husband having trouble with our Volts, one of my sons is having the issue with his Samsung Galaxy Prevail. The other son (also using the Prevail) is not. Not yet, at least. I have told him what to watch for.

So very glad I didn't alter my kindle to use google.

This has nothing to do with the Android operating system. It is the fault of the OEM and Carriers for not updating the devices. The idea is that your device will malfunction and you will buy a new one. This is how they make money. My best advice is, as @chuckh1958 suggested, to buy a device that is supported by CM or other custom ROMs. That way you can perform your own upgrade and stay current with security patches. Think about it. If we each only bought 1 phone every ten years.... there would be a lot of panic in the CEO department. I have a Galaxy SII and I am currently running MARSHMALLOW v6. 0. Official support ended at 4.2.

Also altering your kindle might be an excellent idea. Once again the longest lasting, best supported device on the market? Google Nexus!

The tech keeps telling me what play services is designed to do and how little space it should be taking.... to which I have replied several times, "I know that, and it has behaved in that manner before this update, but now it is not and there's a bug affecting loads of older phones. How can I get a bug report filed?" ...and now he's pushed me off on LG support to get helpful tips on lowering battery drain. (SCREAM)

I get that, totally. I have owned this phone just over a year, and it was a year old model when I bought it. I doubt I'd be happy with a phone for ten years, but surely you don't mean to suggest three is outrageous? This unit performed beautifully until five days ago. I don't task it very hard: phone calls, texting and three games that I played about 10 minutes each, daily.

Forcing us to get new phone by brute force is wrong.

@Alexxann I was referring more to the Android Version. Firmware becomes outdated. The software available does not. Eventually the applications available will no longer function on older versions of Android. This is normal practice in any device or operating system. And yes 1 human year equals like.... 25 Smartphone years.

As I recall, there are two hardware caches the should be cleared right before you preform your factory install. They can be cleared using the same menu that you do your reset from.

It may be that there is an issue lingering in one of those caches.

These are all budget devices you've experienced isn't it? Things like LG Volt, and a Samsung Galaxy Prevail was a budget device five years ago, has 2.3 Gingerbread I believe. AFAIK Prevail was known as Young in Asia. Which is no longer supported at all.

Google won't be able to assist you with an LG problem, any more than say Apple or Microsoft could. They never made the thing.

If #1 was outperformed by #2 would this make you reconsider using a car?

#1 Will get you to where you need to go, just gets a little hot under the hood sometimes.

Well, the Prevail is still on the shelves here in the states. *shrug* It was an easy fix on that phone, simply turning off the auto-update on play services and shutting off system sync did it.

I kinda thought budget models were LG's field of expertise... what do I know? At any rate, we'll be looking to replace 'em all with phones that are at least 2G ram soon-ish. Thanks, g'bye.

I tried uninstalled and update the Google Play services again from the link above.
It's solved the problem. So far so good...

Using root completely remove all system google apps except calendar sync and contacts sync apks. Visit open gapps website and redownload gapps for 4.4. It will auto detect. Pick the pico apps. This will resolve the google play services app update until next update comes along. At that time. Repeat process.

My rooted Volt LS740 gobbles up to 1 GB of internal memory every day and I have to clear it daily. It's taking up memory at "/data/data/com.google.android.gms/databases/context[gmail account address].db".

I know one of the solutions posted at Android Central forum is to make that file read only. Just wondering if there are other fixes to this issue.

That sounds like a permanent fix to me.​

Permanent only if you have a rooted device and never need to add anything to that file and are willing to take the risk that making it read-only isn't going hopelessly screw things up sometime later.

This is no solution. It is a risky work-around at best. Google needs to fix their product. They've broken it for millions of customers on older devices.

New updated Google Play Services fixed this issue for me.
