Is there such a thing as retiring too young?

As I am getting older and older... the more I grow and mature in life... the more and more I just want something sweet... loving and caring... I feel like it has just been one heck of a fight in my younger years...

Now all I want these days is peace, love, serenity and positive expansion.

Life is so short to be fighting one another all the time... I sit here looking at my new very positive horizon... all I want more and more is just love and peace and quiet... but...

I am about to get a small business venture going... it will make quite a bit of money so I want to start considering buying myself a Yacht to go exploring the world while I just sit back have fun and tour the world

I was sitting here by my fire place watching the beautiful embers glow... and I realised how lucky I am to be in such a strong position at such a young age... still in my 20's ... some people would kill to be in my shoes... and the joke is some actually might get killed in my shoes if not careful and responsible to the extreme...

Now something seems to be.... bothering me a little bit... with my new found success and my interesting new little business coming up on the horizon... I really do not even have to work any more at all because with the amount of capital coming in I won't even have to work at all... I will be making quite a lot of money and will get hit hard by tax from it... my manager will sort out everything... I won't even have to stress or bat an eye lid...

When I told my friends they didn't like the sound of it and they seriously warned me that because I have achieved such high levels of success at such a young age and if I retire in my 20's that I will go "mad" from doing nothing all day long...

Well the scary part is I already do feel.... a bit "strange"... kind of ... pointless in a way... if you will... meaningless ... I guess...

Is it true that some people go a bit bonkers if they retire at a very young age?

What are your thoughts?

Has anyone here retired at a veyr young age before and got sick of having fun and went back to work?

I am wondering if I should retire now once I start my small enterprise... it looks very enticing... but ... I might get bored in a way...

I guess it depends on what you consider 'retired'. For most people that means not HAVING to work to provide the necessities (and luxuries) of life. For most people it involves golf, TV and waiting for death to come knocking.

I fantasize about not going to my day job and being affluent enough not to have to, but then I think about my second week and I'd be climbing the walls looking for something to do.

If I had the money I would retire tomorrow.
Finding things to do would be no problem. I would devote more time to music. I'd go places, see my parents more. The garden is also a major job so I'd have that looking pristine. Basically having the freedom to do what I want, not be at the mercy of some tin pot little dictator who likes to throw their weight around.
Must go and buy that lottery ticket.

I already have been on leave for a bit and... I feel... weird already

My little business will produce about what is equivalent in your currency about 15k USD per month in the start

I get heavily taxed by these mother ****ers... I got hit last year with approximately 500 000 rands in tax ...

I am actually now considering moving to a tax haven hehehehehehe! XD

Might immigrate to... something not too sure yet

So with all my new capitol I have accumulated I am going to literally never have to work another day of my life and I want to get my Yacht and have a blast

But I am concerned about getting very bored... lifeless... I am already starting to think I am going to go a bit like "mad" in a way lol... I kinda feel it already....

It's.... very strange what I feel now... maybe I can start a charity or something?

I lvoe animals so maybe something in helping out mother nature?

It was so heavy.... I still feel bad about it.... he was just not up to standards... I had no choice in the matter I tried to reason with the other managers... I still feel sad about it to this day :-(

Even though he had his degree and was qualified he had been quite incompetent in his work and thus put us all at serious risk at one point :-(

I hate some things... I wish there was another way sometimes... it made me feel sick afterwards... I still feel sick firing someone... it is a terrible feeling.

I also hate the dangerous side of work... I have already had 2 very close calls... the one was extremely close...

I feel sad.... I feel so strange.... I wish I never had to fire anybody... I wish life was straight forward where everyone could win...

I also hate being in the higher levels of management... it is effecting my happiness in a way...

I used to be so spontaneous and loving... I used to be so happy but now I feel weird.

How can somebody win if someone loses?

I know we can't have people putting at risk and in harms way but I wish it was easy sometimes.

The Vulcan retired as soon as he met his financial goal at 52. He's been driving me nuts ever since - even though I'm now retired. Everyone keeps asking if I've killed him yet. Everyone in the office would be laughing when we got into a phone argument. Usually wound up with me telling him to RTFM..He's an engineer, he should know that.

We Skyped with kid in UK this am - He kept insisting that the UK used 120 power like we do. The kid and I kept telling him they used 240 (230) He finally looked it up and apologized.

Well sadly it was a serious mistake. It was not a minor.

He used SA - 105 for the one process and it was a huge no no as it would have clearly buckled under such massive pressure as to how it was designed

Luckily our AIA picked it up before the oxygen line was brought back up on line... there could have been one massive explosion if it been brought back up live in such a state. So yes it was a very serious mistake he made. Everyone could have died if it had been brought back up online.

It can be extremely stressful the energy industry particularly my side.

People get fired a lot in this industry as the risk of having incompetent people is just far too dangerous as it puts everyone at risk.

It is very harsh... but unfortunately it is the way it goes.

If you think what happened for this scenario was bad - there was a catalyst cracker at Sasol Berg 1 a few years ago where there was the wrong specification for a nitrogen line at Sasol.

Now nitrogen is not flammable in small quantities - however in much bigger or larger quantities it is a problem and can ignite if the circumstances are acceptable.

Now nobody was checking the isometric veeeeeeeeeery carefully as there was a tiny error in the specs for the one system.

Basically it (the isometric and P&ID) went through about a few different engineers and none of them checked it properly...

Guess what happened when they started fabrication?

BOOM

Massive explosion!

I think it was 6 people that died and the one engineer later couldn't handle the fact that he had directly killed several people so he hung himself.

The other engineer that was also responsible went to jail I think it was for life.

In general everyone is quite strict in the energy industry - particularity oil and gas or whenever volatile or dangerous chemicals are involved.

Other wise you get another Chernobyl or something horrible along those lines

I hope I never ever in a million years have to fire somebody ever again.

Just a thought, but with this being such a safety critical industry, then it shouldn't really be possible for one person to make a critical mistake leading to loss of life. Wouldn't you think that the process should include checks from multiple people? Because as we all know, everyone makes mistakes. Fortunately the mistakes I make don't lead to anyone getting killed, just a few harmless code bugs.

I also found it but was trying hard to avert anyone getting fired - I had a feeling ti was coming

But once the AIA had found I knew it was going to go only one way and he wasn't going to have someone who is not awake.

This is why there can be no incompetent people in our industry.

Yes this is why it was averted because of people like the AIA and myself always checking everything.

In fact in nuclear it is extremely strict - there are maybe even more than twice as many of us just to be 500% sure.

I don't drink a lot though I only have 1 or 2 per night. It was because of the recent QC getting fired.

Also the industry can get very stressful - it helps me a lot to relax I feel much better after drinking a bit

Its not a massive amount - just 1 or 2 a night sometimes I don't drink at all. I feel a bit more numb and more relaxed kind of thing after started to drink a little bit. I also don't drink after 9pm as I could then blow red the next morning if I am not careful.

Dangerous stuff there, @Stinky Stinky. And it can be a very slippery slope. If you feel you *NEED* a drink, rather than just want one, or you do it to make you feel better or lift your spirits, the only spirits you should be lifting are the ones you find in church.

Don't get me wrong. I am not a proponent of total temperance by any means. I enjoy a nice beer, a glass of wine and the occasional cocktail, but I also come from a family with a long and sordid history of alcoholism. I am very sensitive to the dark side of drinking.

I think the fact it concerns you that you are drinking and you've noticed the change is a good sign to not allow it to get to the point of being a problem. Everyone ... and I mean EVERYONE ... is susceptible to abusing alcohol. Don't let it become a problem. Please.

It's just that it is so stressful sometimes... I go to work at 7... and come home on average about 7 sometimes 8

Sometimes I just feel so tired and so low and I don't even know how I do it all lol

This industry can be extremely rewarding yet also extremely stressful. I feel like I have no life lol

I am self employed at two occupations. I'm a trim carpenter/cabinet maker which I've been doing since 1966, I don't hate it but I'm a bit tired of it lol. I started a lawn service 27 years ago. I still enjoy it a great deal. Yep, the key is to enjoy your employment.

Hehe some epic responses here I really appreciate the interesting feedback / knowledge

Don't get me wrong guys I absolutely love my job!

It's just the insane levels of responsibility... the stress is insane I work about on average 10 hours sometimes 12 hours per day sometimes even 7 days a week just to make sure we bring in the millions lol

In fact I am starting to get a bit "ugly" and "nasty" because of the intense kind of work and stress and very long hours and stress levels can be concerning sometimes.

I love my job I just feel like I really need a break sometimes.

I am also only one of a very few people here that have these higher levels of qualifications so they just can't find anybody else hahahahahahaha!

The other day I threatened to leave due to the fact that they did not have the one piece of vital equipment that I cannot perform the proper procedure and it is insane because we are working with materials and technology that costs approximately 600$ per liter!

(Yes USA dollars not rands! )

I told them do it properly or don't do it at all! I won't get involved with dodgey people... they started crying when I threatened to leave them (as my qualifications are extremely rare here) and I told them - they must do things properly and according to the correct and proper law and procedure and if they did not behave themselves they will be reported and seriously dealt with for trying to cut corners and being dodgey scum.

That equipment is extremely expensive but absolutely necessary in order to complete that specific procedure with those particular chemicals.

I need that testing equipment to do the one process properly and flawlessly or it will just be a monumental stuff up and a serious hazard that could get everyone killed due to it being faulty!

Scary isn't it dealing with such dodgey people?

But if you think 600$ is scary for one liter check out some of these crazy prices hahaha!

I love my job it's just so stressful at times... I wish I could just be free!

I also feel like an "angry" and "ugly" person from all this tons of work and stress... I feel stressed and so tired... current legislation says we cannot work more than 140 hours per week (due to safety concerns / fatigue) but I feel exhausted already

Maybe I sound like a small cry baby but when you start working 12 hours day 7 days a week then you are welcome to say I am a wimp lol

Sometimes I do so many heavy calculations and so much work I feel like I am going to die

Sometimes my brain feels like it is going to explode lol XD
