Need Help! - App I designed keeps crashing

Hello Everyone,
I'm not sure I'm even in the right place to be asking this question, but here goes...
I designed an android app, that I paid a developer to build, as I don't know how to code myself.
The app is already on the market, but I recently found out from customer comments that the app keeps crashing. The developer who built the app is too busy to look into this problem for me. Should I be looking for a new developer on Freelancer, or can anyone here help me please? I sincerely appreciate any advice.

Hopefully your "busy" developer left you the source code for this crashing app, because otherwise it will be build it all again from scratch. I'm NOT a dev.

Hi Cathryn. If you paid a developer for the app then you own the source code at least. Plus I think it's pretty poor that the Dev has washed his hands of this. But did you pay them to support the app? I would expect delivery of working code though!

I do have an .apk file, but I have no clue what to do with it. The .apk was uploaded to Google Play by my developer in 2014 (I don't even know how to do that!). It is only now that I have decided to get my act together and see if I can improve the app to stop it crashing. 3 years later, my developer has become pretty busy, so the blame is fully on my shoulders, not his.

andre3wap mentioned something about a stack trace. I'm not computer illiterate by any means, but I have no clue about coding an app, so I don't know what a stack trace is.

Also, as I have never used a developer forum such as this before, I am also a little worried about uploading the .apk. Would it be safe, or would my idea be stolen? So sorry for the paranoia!

I'd be happy to pay someone to work with me to fix the app, and possibly develop it further (I have loads of ideas), though I don't have a WHOLE lot of money right now.

I also have the source files for the app in iOS format, so if anyone is proficient in both android and Apple, I would love to work with you, if you don't mind a lot of hand holding!

Well thank you. Your wonderful comments have just boosted my confidence, which I definitely need! I just hope that someone here can help me get the app to stop crashing, which would give me even more confidence.

Do you know what causes the crashes? Because being able to reproduce the problem is half the battle in fixing it.

If you can initially install Android Studio and load the project, then that would be a good first step in the process of investigating the problems.
