Rooting the DINC

So with all the recent news over rooting over at XDA and here at Phandroid, I have a question to ask all of you...

I don't think I will. Someone over at XDA, when responding to the root issue, made a really good point. HTC has been making Incredible phones, pun intended, and I feel like I am not only happy with my phone as is, but I am finding it hard to even think of a legitimate reason for doing it.

With my old WinMo (I know, apples & oranges) the root was great. It allowed me to tether via usb or wifi but everytime I flashed a new ROM, it became slower and slower and slower until 4 devices later I decided to just stop.

What about you

im still not exactly sure what the benefits are. I know we can get rid of pre-installed apps but is that really worth breaking warranty on my DInc? someone convince me.

And of course install Froyo, since we will have to wait a little while for HTC to release their version of froyo with sense. That's if we get root before HTC releases their version of Froyo. lol.

And of course to get rid of all the crap that comes preinstalled.. Or, at least stop them from starting up.

Haha you're right...it does. I agree though, the crap that comes on the phone is annoying. Why can't every app have an uninstall? ESPECIALLY CityID...that shit pisses me off so bad.

HTC: Oh here you go, I know you just paid 300 for this phone and we thought you should have a trial app that can't be installed...

I could definitely wait for Froyo, i just want some garbage off my phone though. I don't know if its worth it. I am a Linux guy (no guru either) and tethering is going to be a bit of a process, rooting or not. So I'm not convinced its worth it

For those that are rooting for tethering, could you illustrate some of the situations where you would use tethering? I'm curious as to what other people use it for.

it's hard to justify it with 2.2 having most features that people want but personally i like to tinker and i want to see how she runs without sense UI

If root will allow me to use the DINC as a wifi hotspot for my iTouch, I'm in! Anyone know if this will be possible? My friend has a G1 rooted and it works awesome.

I voted no for now.

I installed the leak (v3) on my Eris and since then had problems with the battery, contacts, etc. Don't get me wrong, the leak worked fine for the most part, but considering how much I just had to pay to get my Incredible off Craigslist (too impatient to wait until the end of June), I am going to wait on rooting. Maybe after a couple of months of having the phone and getting root perfected I'll do it, but for right now, I'm NOT taking the chance of screwing it up.

For those that are rooting for tethering, could you illustrate some of the situations where you would use tethering? I'm curious as to what other people use it for.

I get nervous if I am away from my computer for more than...30 minutes. I bring my computer everywhere I go and frankly, what is a computer without internet these days?

I never thought I'd use it as frequently as I did but when I was at college, the internet blew and my WinMo would allow my laptop to surf anywhere on campus (plus had a neat feature of being able to assign the SSID to something along the lines of **** {College Name}'s INTERNET).

I mean what do you use the internet for? Those are your uses right there. If you are not like me and don't panic when you aren't connected to the internet then it won't be a big deal not tethering

I doubt I will root my Incredible. I like SenseUI and I can wait until HTC/VZ provide the Froyo update to us Incredible owners later this year. Phone is working great and root won't give me any substantial benefit over 2.1 with SenseUI that I can see.

I do, however, enjoy following the attempts to gain root on the Incredible...

I did try rooting when the first leak came out, but somehow I screwed it up and ended up with no root access. No big deal honestly. But like I said, I would eventually end up doing it, but since I just got my phone yesterday, I'd like some time to use it before I take the chance of bricking it

you musta been doin something wrong if you were flashing new roms and your phone got slower. must have been using poor roms or something. i cooked all my own back in the winmo days, and every time i flashed it was to make it better and faster. not trying to talk you down, just sayin.

infact that is the whole point. for a hacker/customizer root access gives you so much more control. i enjoy having my phone tailored to my liking, visually. with root access you can change every single image on the phone, from color to a whole new image. with winmo you could do all that from the get go. the reason for unlocking (rooting) was to change roms for better performance. however with android, i find it to be the opposite. i am pleased with the performance, but would love to customize it visually. so that is my reason for wanting root. and possibly getting the benefits of 2.2 before htc decides to roll it out. the one thing i don't like about root, is you can not unroot, so if you have a warranty issue, pray that they don't catch its rooted. with winmo you could always relock and send it out for service.

if 2.2 hits the incredible officially before root is attained, i might be inclined to not root, we'll see. the customizer in me may root it while i sleep, haha

I like Sense, cracking a winmo phone was almost necessary, but I can customize this phone plenty without root, and if 2.2 gives us the ability to store apps on the 8gig internal memory as I thought was rumored I don't even see a compelling reason to get rid of the bloatware vzw throws on the phone. Like I said maybe in a few months or year or whenever the warranty is up I might, overclocking would be nice to give it a little speed boost once the newness wears off.

You're right, at first (especially with Lite ROMs) my phone flew and I got it up to 12 days of battery life. But, the phone in general became sluggish after a few weeks of use. Mainly because of little things building up, text messages that weren't automatically being deleted (had 2000 + at one point between one person) and other random caches.

I can't say there is a single thing I miss from WinMo...
