Root CyanogenMod 5.0.7 (Android 2.1) on post e911 magic

ADW Launcher is awesome.. I like how it makes my Magic look like a Nexus One.. Well at least the screen anyway lol

This thing flies!

You are right about that.. Like I said in another post here in the forums... Rogers would have to rip my Magic from my cold dead hands before I upgrade to their Rom...
the performance that Cyanogen brings to the magic is sick... Had my phone side by side with my friends stock magic (with sense) and the performance just blew me away.. After my friend witnessed that, he asked me to root his phone... He couldn't be happier:D

Another convert that has had their eyes opened. Good to see :)

I enabled JIT on my magic last night, and I'm getting nearly twice the scores in Linpack than I was before. Apps open faster, and response is just generally better. No more chopyness when browsing through the app launcher, or in contacts. All from running a simple script and putting a command into the terminal! Android (and technology) in general never ceases to amaze me.

One more rooter = one more potential Dev/Themer/Voice to piss off Rogers.

And any of those three makes me happy! ;)

Edit: @jscrimshaw Be sure to check out www.xda-developers.com, send your friend there for a perusal as well. ALL the resources you need to turn that phone into exactly what you want it to be!

Made a couple of small changes to my guide.

. Line 9 actually had 2 files to download, I separated them into lines 9 and 9.5.
. Changed the names for CyanogenMod & Kernel port to reflect current version
. Changed the link for Aman Ra recovery to reflect latest version 1.7.0
. Added the APN settings for Rogers to the bottom of the guide in case someone needs them.

Some more questions before I make the leap:

Are any of you guys running themes with this ROM? I do like the polish the Sense UI added to the whole user experience. I also like associating my contacts with their Facebook id's (mostly for their display pictures). Is that possible with this ROM or with some other software? Having a widget with pictures of my Favorite contacts' pictures is handy.

Is Exchange email and contact support part of 2.1? I can't live without this.

I was surprised to hear that JIT is available too, that's awesome! Are others running with it? Does it make a big difference, certainly seems like it should.

Thanks!

Go ahead and take the leap, you won't be disappointed. The default contact manager does have facebook integration and you can set the phone to sync with facebook. In addition you can sync with a corporate exchange account and I assume that just like facebook, you can have your exchange contacts show up in you contact list.

I'm currently using JIT and although I really didn't notice much of a difference when I first installed, now that I'm overclocked the phone just sings along.

If you really want the scoop on the rom you should go visit the forum over at CyanogenMod.com and get the information from the source.

well i got up to the part where i need to install astro file manager..but i cant login into google :( im using wifi i did a factory reset which didnt help everything was going smoothly up until this part..

it says something about my sim card not being provisioned for data services surely i should be able to login over wifi considering greatbigdog did the whole process without a sim card..

any other way of installing the .apk with using a program?

Can you verify that you have general internet access? And can you login to gmail from a browser? If you can then you should be able to setup the gmail initial account on the device. for sure you should be able to do this without a sim or without cell data.

On another note, anyone tried the Super-E port? It is another mod of the cynanogenmod. Since it is done by a local dev he knows our needs. It seems a bit faster than the base cyan and so far the battery life is acceptable considering the smoothness and speed. I'm getting ~2.5 on linpack with setcpu set to 576 MHz. I've hit as high as 3.0 with an overclock kernel set to 710MHz but that wasn't nice to the battery so I'm back to the normal kernel and things are very smooth and much faster than the stocker rom.

All I can say is that since you are don't have anything installed yet I would go back to recovery and do a full wipe including the cache etc. Do a flash with the latest and greatest, in the right order of course. In my case Market gives me a full list of all the apps I previously had so it was easy to get back to what I had on the previous rom, I prefer this to a backup restore when changing rom versions.

If you've already made it through the steps then you don't need to do it again. Go into recovery mode (home + power) at power up. You should then have lots of options to wipe, flash, partition, etc. You can also mount USB if plugged into the pc in case you need to drop files to SD.

One of the options is to wipe which is similar to how you do it normally. But you can also wipe the cache etc. After you do that then do the rom flashing steps. don't worry if it takes much longer to boot the first time, the cache is getting rebuilt. At that point you treat it like a new phone and setup as required.

im getting an exclamation mark and the phone next to it when i do home + power which i presume cant be a good thing..

not good. You'll need to apply the RUU again and make sure it completes fully. You don't yet have root or a recovery. However you might go through the instructions and check if you missed a step and might not need to go through all of it again. Maybe you just missed getting root?

i think i might have missed step 19 im still on hboot 1.33.0010..im applying the rogers ruu again...if that doesnt work i might go back to the applying the sapphire ruu and going from there again..

when im on step 17 after i do the flash image should i be getting some sort of confirmation that its been flashed or do i just get # again..because after i enter the command after like 10 seconds i get # again..

on step 19..after i select flash from zip then the hboot file it tell me to press menu to complete the installation or press home + back to reboot..when i press menu nothing happens :/

yeh im still getting the yellow exclamation mark...i dont know what im doing wrong..when i do back and power when turning on the phone it says im on hboot 1.33.0010 again..

this isnt as simple as that tutorial makes it out to seem :(

For what it's worth you can do the following rather than installing Astro just to then install the flash recovery app:
Code:
adb install flashrec-1.1.1-20090908.apk

can i do that after i install the the non rogers ruu or do i definatly need the rogers ruu before i can go any further..also the fact that i cant access home+power screen, wont that cause me problems further on?

im not sure where im going wrong considering there arent that many steps before the rogers ruu part which is really annoying..

on a side note if things dont work out can i revert back to the rogers ruu with htc sense released back in january?
