Root KaosFroyo V35 is out!

I finally decided to give KaosFroYo a try and installed 35-1 last night. I have previously used XTR Sense, mostly. So far, very unimpressed. I did a full wipe of everything, completely reformatted my SD card since I had it partitioned, and installed it.

First of all, it has been slow. It did not automatically download all my previously downloaded apps (thank goodness for Titanium). I thought that was one of the perks of FroYo. And even after setting it to install everything to the SD card, many were not and I had to manually move about 75% of them. Even after a full 24 hours of normal use, it is still laggy when scrolling, swiping between screens, and when opening a few apps.

Second, the dialer has been very unimpressive for me. With Sense's dialer, you pull up the dialer and start typing the phone number or start spelling out a contact's name and it will bring up those contacts so all you do is touch the contact you want to call/message. It seems with this dialer I have to type the number completely, or I have to scroll all the way through every contact (unless it's a "Favorite" contact) to the one I want to call.

Finally, battery life has been worse than 2.1, so far. I'll be sure and give it a few days to "normalize" a bit, and also drain to about 15% and charge to full a few times to hopefully calibrate the battery meter since it might not be properly calibrated.

Unless someone knows something I don't about this dialer to make selecting contacts as easy as it is using Sense and 2.1, that is a major deal breaker for me. I contact a lot of different people and can't stick everyone in my "Favorites" or else it will be just like my long list of contacts. Also, the overall lagginess. Is this something that just comes with the ADW launcher? Any suggestions? Before I toss and forget about FroYo and go back to 2.1, I would like to know if there is something I am doing wrong. I'll still give a few days to see if it speeds up a bit.

ADW ran like a dog when I had KaosFroyo. Used LauncherPro and had no problems.

Give it some time. It needs to fill the cache and until then, it will run slow.

And the difference you described with the dialer is because its using the stock Android dialer. If you want the dialing search feature like in Sense, download DialerOne. A lot of the differences you are describing are the differences between Sense and stock vanilla Android and really isn't a fault in the ROM itself.

Personally, I went back to xtrROM, because of the camera issues on Kaos. When it worked, it worked great, but when it didn't....well, it locks up the entire OS. Otherwise, Kaos performed flawlessly for me.

Also, heads up, there is a bug in Kaos, where if your connected to wifi, you cannot send or receive MMS messages. You have to disable wifi to send or receive them.

It only does that if you had Froyo already installed, or a Cyanogen 2.1 ROM. xtr is not Cyanogen. And if you restored any system data from xtr with Titanium - any app colored red or green - that may explain some of your problems. You may want to wipe and restore just user apps.

And even after setting it to install everything to the SD card, many were not and I had to manually move about 75% of them. Even after a full 24 hours of normal use, it is still laggy when scrolling, swiping between screens, and when opening a few apps.

Unless you have a class 6 SD card or better, internal memory is faster than SD. Also, apps installed to SD, in my experience, never get updated from the market. I'd strongly discourage apps2sd unless you have no choice. (Also, any app with a homescreen widget cannot be installed on SD, or the widget will not load on restart.)

I agree; check out DialerOne from the market.

If you didn't recharge after flashing, the battery gets pretty drained by running Amon's Recovery. See what happens tomorrow. (Or, if you really don't like Froyo, go back to xtr. Not everybody likes it.)

If you don't switch to Dialer One, there is a search button in contacts, and it can do voice search as well. In fact, there is a pretty powerful voice dialer built-in to Froyo.

I believe that Demache is incorrect about MMS - I receive them fine with WiFi, I send them fine with WiFi running. It's only when you receive a video message that you need to download that you need to turn off WiFi, just to do the download.

Another thing I noticed, Live Wallpapers don't seem to be working very well. Not even the smoke one already installed with the ROM.[/QUOTE]

yeah that smoke lwp has never worked on any rom that i've ever tried. Try "Zoomfield" it' in the market & it' pretty awesome & very customizable. I have another one called "Nexus Revamped" It's not in the market but you can google it. It is smooth

two points,

ADW I haven't had any issues with, I switched to LauncherPro, then decided to switch back to ADW, the latest updates seem to have resolved the lagging.

Camera app, works fine if you replace the current one with a previous build from v34.

alternatively you can grab it from the V34 ROM file.

Did it to me everytime. It either works properly, or it doesn't, as I read in the FAQ. Probably could have done another wipe, after doing it twice, but it never worked for me, in V30 or V34. Not even entirely text MMS messages. No big deal though. I sent and received MMS very infrequently.

Is it normal for the reboot to take over half an hour with this after flashing and rooting for the first time?

I knew it'd take a while, but damn...over half an hour right now...

No, that's too long. It should be about 10 minutes, tops.

Did you do a factory reset/data wipe before you restarted the phone?

The basic procedure:

- restart phone in recovery

[optional] - Nandroid backup, to go back to what you have. Optional only if you know you are not going back, or you have a recent Nandroid backup and things haven't changed mich

- unless the developers says otherwise, wipe data. If you have apps on an ext partition on your SD card (don't worry if you do not know what this is), wipe ext as well.

- flash the new ROM.

- restart the phone

Well, I rooted, then wiped the phone, then went to load the zip, realized it was accidentally unzipped already, started the phone back up with the default software after the wipe, redownloaded the kaosfroyo, put it back in root, then went back to the root screen and loaded the zip, and clicked reboot.

Going on 35 minutes now with the android screen going...what should I do now...

You've all heard this before, but I'm saying it again... IT'S LIKE A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PHONE!

I had been lamenting the fact that I'd need to spend a bunch of money to get a phone with better processing power. Not anymore! My sleek little Eris is running like a champ, and I'm thrilled. There's virtually zero lag at any time.

One glitch: the Bluetooth connection between the phone and my Garmin Zumo 550 cycles endlessly. Any ideas?

Update: The Bluetooth issue was user error. Rather than connecting as Eris > Zumo > Scala Rider (helmet comm), I went Eris > Zumo & Eris > Scala Rider. My mistake. All is well.

Basic troubleshooting, unpair, reboot, re-pair. No go, wipe cache, reboot, attempt again. NandBackup, factory wipe, re-pair, no go then do a nandrestore, if it worked just setup your phone again. (use titanium backup to backup your apps to save time.).

good luck.

please elaborate.

Alright, for example:

You know how you used to scroll through volumes from highest to lowest, then after the lowest it went to silent, then after silent to vibrate mode?

Now it goes from highest, to lowest, to silent, and that's it.

If you want it to vibrate, you go to the sound options, and set it to vibrate only when on silent, and then when you scroll through it goes from highest to lowest, to vibrate, with no silent option...

Am I doing something wrong?
