I've just gotten my SGS (on o2 UK) and while mostly delighted the lag was getting me down so after looking around decided to try the JI6 Froyo ROM that's out for the Captivate.

I897UCJI6 - FROYO - for real - xda-developers

Now I wasn't sure it'd work on the SGS as they are slightly different phones, but it seems to work about 95%.
The home button doesn't seem to work anymore, when I plug in a USB cable the phone reboots and my network connection keeps dropping. I cannot decide if it's worth sticking with this ROM cos it's lovely otherwise or if I should go back to something more o2 UK friendly? What do people here think?

More than likely it would, but seeing as whenever I plug in my usb cable my phone switches off it seems I won't be doing any such thing for quite a while...

I need to somehow root it and then use Rom Manager over wifi to update the phone with a proper Rom but at this point there seems to be no way of rooting it through an app as it's on Froyo (One Click Lag Fix root only works on Eclair). Any sugggestions?

the new version (2.1.2) of ryanZA OCLF works with froyo. im running it now actually.
its available from android market

do you have an external sd card? will your phone go into 3 button download mode?

if so you can back your contacts, files and such up on external card. pop the phone in 3button download and flash firmware again.
