I rooted via Unrevoked 3.21 on a mac!

I will be sending you a PM shortly!

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to seeing what you have to say about rooting on a Mac. Got my EVO last week and though I'm not really dying to root just yet, I'm still curious about the benefits and definitely want to get rid of the bloatware.

I've been told that rooting isn't necessary in order to tether outside of Sprint's control via PdAnet etc.. so is there an advantage in terms of rooting where tethering is concerned then?

One more question. Is it necessary to root and use different ROM's in order to modify the GUI, and if so, to what extent? I mean, are third party launchers and such only available for those with different ROM's ? If not, and all that is possible with the stock ROM and such, are there threads which go into detail about how to apply these changes to the GUI and how to use them etc ?

Thanks!

Doug

1. PDAnet and EasyTether both offer wired tethering for without rooting. The free version of each allows you to access everything but secured sites (https://). The paid version allows secured site access.

2. Launcher Pro and ADW (and others) do work on non-rooted phones and are third party launchers. ROMs will alter a lot more than just the launcher, however, so it isn't really a comparison. If you are only interested in the launcher aspect, though, then do a search for Launcher Pro and/or ADW.

After flashing a ROM, kernals, or anything else that has to be flashed, do you need to keep the .zip files on your SD card or can you delete them?

They do not need to remain on your SD card. I might suggest saving them on your computer so you have them handy, but, once flashed, they aren't necessary to the function of the ROM, kernel, theme, etc.

The .zip files are handy to keep on your SD card if you want to flash "on the go" (away from your computer). I've got a 16BG card, so space isn't a concern for me since I don't keep music on the phone, and I convinced one of the girls at work to root her phone by switching between Fresh and CyanogenMod right before her eyes on my old Hero. :)

Matlock, PM will be on the way shortly. :)

I just rooted my phone last night But for some reason I can't get my wireless tether to work. My computer tries to contact but it takes really long and says I can't. I am using using windows 7.

Another thing is I download titanium back up and frozen alot of the preinstalled sprint apps. I have frozen that amazon app but its still popping up in my app screen and the other ones have seem to been frozen.

Thanks

This Thread is so educational. Thanks to everyone! But I need some help.

I rooted my Evo and downloaded the Wireless Tether app. Everything seems to be going well expect that my laptop cannot connect to my device. My device is listed on my laptop as a wireless network, however, when I try to connect it takes a long time then it times out. Does anyone know what I can do about this? Please help.

Are you using the latest version? If not, download it here: Downloads - android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code

Do you have encryption on or off? If it is on try turning it off for a test.

Hey Matlock, if you do not already have a section about the issues with Wireless Tether, may I suggest that you include a note or something in the original post since most people root to attain this. Every single person that roots ask this same question over and over. Anyway, like I said, just a suggestion that would save lots of typing and bandwidth. And don't forget that another solution is to flash a ROM that unlocks the native Hotspot app.
Thanks for your time and consideration!!!!!!!!!

Got another question. Since I rooted and flashed a couple ROMS, some of my apps won't update when the market says they need to. It downloads fine, but then fails in the installation. Specifically it is happenling with "City Jump", "Kyak", "Jorte", and "Movies" apps. I thought maybe it was the ROM, but I flashed another ROM and they still won't update. I was using Myn's 2.2 Rls 3 and now on Fresh 3.4

I downloaded the updated wireless tether app and now my laptop connects to my device, however, I still don't have access to the internet. I'm getting no activity.

I enabled wifi encryption but still nothing.

Try disabling encryption and enabling Access-Control. When your laptop connects you will get a notice in the notification area on your phone. Drop that down and click on the laptop connection and see if you get Internet connection at that point.

I am using pre 12 with win xp with stock ROM and it is working for me.

Thanks. It works now. I enabled encryption and disabled Access-Control. Now it works like a charm. I'm using it as we speak (type):)

NAME: Warm TwoPointTwo With Kings #9 BFS Kernal
VERSION: RLS 3
WEBSITE: Warm TwoPointTwo [RLS 3]
OVERALL RATING: 5.1

WHAT DOES NOT WORK IN THE ROM (ROM ONLY):
So far, everything works; but sometimes I can't install some apps (rare).

YOUR IMPRESSION OVERALL OF THE ROM/KERNEL:

How easy was it to install? Very easy, actually. I just had to download the ROM from the ROM Manager. And then flash it! Easy as that.
How long have you been using it? about a week and a half.
Is it user-friendly? Yup!
Does it Force Close a lot? Only if I'm installing about 10 apps, listen to the radio, and loading a big page. But other than that nope!
What are your favorite features? It can be underclocked and overclocked, the smoothness, and the bootscreen for some reason.
What are your least favorite features? If the phone is really laggy and you decide to restart it, it stays on the "HTC EVO 4G" white screen for about 2 minutes.
What kind of battery life does it have? It lasts me all day. Usually, it goes from 7:30 a.m (100%) to 10:00 p.m with 30-20% remaining with medium to heavy use.
Would you recommend this ROM/KERNEL to others? Of Course!
What combination of ROM & KERNEL are you using? Warm TwoPointTwo [RLS 3] With Kings #9 BFS Kernal

The problems with the ROM is that sometimes is will lag, but rarely, and if restarted, it will take a while, even if Hot Restarted, but that's about it. The UI is very smooth and is ready for anything you throw at it! (There are a lot of add-ons)
