Is there a way to switch off the 3g without using airplane mode? That way in areas that i'm in that don't have 3g i can turn it off to conserve battery life so it's not constantly searching for it.

1. Open the Phone application.
2. Dial *#*#INFO#*#*
3. The phone is now in Test Mode. Scroll down to the Set preferred network type setting and change it from CDMA auto (PRL) to CDMA only.
From Motorola Droid X: Disable 3G.

That seems pretty unnecessary just to switch off 3G temporarily.
I haven't personally used Quick Settings, but it looks nice. I'll have to try it out.
I personally recommend SwitchPro Widget. It costs 99
