Aldiko - epub format question

I downloaded Aldiko and I'd like to purchase some books for it. I've seen some sites that sell in the epub format but they are a bit on the expensive side. I like the prices that Amazon and Barnes & Noble offer for their ebooks but I think they are in a proprietary format.

I guess my question is, where is a good place to purchase epub books at a reasonable price?

Thanks!

The short response: You need DRM-free EPUBs. Aldiko does not support DRM, and I have no idea if they plan to.

You'll probably find the majority of EPUBs available for sale out there have DRM enabled. Aldiko has two of the best sources of DRM-Free EPUBS already built into it.

That being said, Fictionwise has a selection of what it calls Multiformat Ebooks, which are DRM-Free and can be loaded into Aldiko, and they are reasonably priced, especially when you take the "micropay rebates" into account.

If you're not too fussed about using Aldiko, Kobobooks has an android client, although it's a bit green still. I submitted a bug report the other day and they assured me a more usable ebook reader was coming along. They have an excellent collection of books at somewhat reasonable prices. eReader also have an Android client using their own specific format, but I'd be wary of choosing anything that isn't EPUB at the moment. I haven't tried this client.

I recently read that Barnes and Noble is developing their e-reader for the android platform. Hopefully that will come soon. I need something I can use on my home PC as well as my Droid... since I read both places. I currently use Mobipocket. I use that for my PC and also used to use it for my Blackberry. I have been hoping they would develop a reader for the Android phones, but haven't seen any signs yet.

Well, I checked out Fictionwise and they do have some very good deals. The only problem is that the book I wanted is only offered in secure Adobe epub (and secure ereader). I take it that both of these are DRM protected (I'm new to the ebook realm).

Also, I downloaded Calibre to see what it looks like. I tried converting a pdf file just for grins but the output was unreadable.

I'm going on a business trip next week and thought it would be nice and convenient to have something to read on the Droid. Oh well, I guess I'll just stick with paperbacks for now or find a different title...

Hmm. Calibre should have no problem at all converting pdf to epub. The only format I have come across so far that it doesn't play nice with is doc. I convert/keep all my books on my computer in lit format and convert them to epub to read on my phone. Never a glitch. I really hate to carry a paperback book any more. I have been totally spoiled by technology.

I am using aldiko to read eBooks(epub) on my Motorola Milestone and I have a question .Why do I have a white margin of 3-4 mm on the left and 3-4 mm on the right of the text even if I set the Layout->Left Margin to 0 ? As far as I have seen on the internet on other mobile devices the text can fill much better the useful white area of the screen.

Thank you in advance.

I found a nice ebook app that supports ereader and mobi drm. "iReader for Android". I use it for DRM eReader books, and strip the DRM from my mobi books to read them in FBReaderJ.

You should be able to find iReader in the marketplace.

QUOTE=tebower;215311]I entirely second this question. I bought some epub books, but then discovered they had DRM! I also need a good source for books.[/QUOTE]

Being a newbie to readers/ebooks etc I have no idea what a DRM is....... please explain.
I also have ePub books and am unable to read them on my tablet using Kindle so am looking for another application.
How do I know if mine are DRM free or not? and
What's the difference?
Cheers:thinking:
