The negative press about 4G seems to be building

And the HTC inspire is at the center of the debate.

It was one thing when small phone sites were doing their reviews (sites that almost no one in main stream america have ever heard of) but now.."household names" like Popular Science are starting to slam the 4G situation..

This article in Popular Science was interesting:

Testing the Goods: HTC's Inspire 4G* (And That's a Huge Asterisk) | Popular Science

And i saw something on cnet about "4G-gate" mentioned the other day.....

AT&Ts marketing may end up being a bad PR move if this keeps on...

Personally I knew when I bought the inspire it was not on 4G, since they have yet to broadcast 4g or how ever you wanna put it. If you bought this phone thinking it would be running 4g speeds, maybe you should start reading the fine print. My reason for getting the inspire #1 HTC!, #2 android, #3 the future- meaning i am now preparred for what is coming in the future years. LTE on att wont be out until atleast 2013 oh wait that 2 years when im due for an upgrade and they will have lte phones out. To say the least att is supose to roll out 20 new phones this year and not sure how many will be android, how many will be HTC and how many will be $99.99.

Sorry got carried away, long day, just venting.

I'm not worried friend. In a month everyone won't care

lol maybe some but the majority wont care because the speeds will start increasing dramatically
As Lumbergh said in the movie Office Space,"Yeah, um-- I'm gonna have to go ahead and sort of disagree with you there." Care to place a wager that "in a month everyone won't care?" I can virtually guarantee that while it might start to roll out in a month, it'll be a long time before a sizable number of customer phones are actually running faster. It's all BS, smoke, and mirrors. Haven't you ever heard of "throwing the customer a bone?" Tell them that you're starting to roll out the system means you can drag it out a long time. No, it's going to be just the opposite; in a month when the entire system doesn't magically start running 4x faster, people willl care - and be really pissed off. Loving the Inspire won't get around that.

Actually you are incorrect once the backhaul is turned on end of march early april it will be for everyone, LTE on the other hand will be a slow roll out

Where do you read that in one month the entire system gets switched on everywhere? From the quoted article: "By year-end 2011, we expect nearly 2/3 of our mobile broadband traffic to be carried over enhanced backhaul." That means there will still more than 33% of their customer base without "4G' at the end of the year. It shows that the system will take more like a year to be entirely up and running, not appearing in its entirety in a split second when they turn on the few areas they have ready one month from now.

Leaving 33% of their customer base pissed off that nine months later, their "4G" still isn't.

I dont know what they are pissed off about, when i bought this device I educated myself and knew that the backhaul was coming later and eventually. If they are pissed off its there own fault for not researching

That is certainly true but remember...we have to put ourselves in the mind of "cell phone user joe average".

When you send an email it says "sent from HTC Inspire 4g"

When you log onto the AT&T website, 4G is on the front page, when you see an AT&T commercial 4G is on it. In Atlanta there is a HUGE building size billboard advertising it.

Now when 'cell phone user joe average" who HASN'T done the reasearch starts noticing his phone isnt faster...hears about this thing called "speed test" downloades it, sees that it i slow...THEN decides to do some research and THEN finds out the facts.....

"Pisse- off-ness" is bound to result no?

Well i guess but it isn't justifiable

Is.Joe average phone user savvy of mobile data speeds that it would really matter in the first place? Clearly ATT is behind the curve in terms of hspa+ and LTE. Nothing can change that.

Fact is, the inspire is.a kick ass device and I'm enjoying the shit out of it. I don't care what ppl write about the network and if they conclude the inspire is crap based upon marketing techniques of the carrier then that is their own ignorance.

I'm just sitting here enjoying this phone watching every moron with 10 fingers write whatever they want to remain relevant. You can call me Joe

I agree.

I don't think i really explained very well. What i meant to infer was that my previous post above about joe average cell phone user is what Popular Science and the "4G-gate" term are probably referring to in THEIR editorials.

Oh i get it, thats wat they do sow discourse and anger. they are the reason so many crap on AT&T's network even though its not true

Uh, first off, you're "research" was proved wrong by kb58, and I shouldn't have to research whether or not a provider has 4g service if they are selling a phone with 4g in the name... its bad marketing, I hope it bites them or they get sued for false advertising.

I don't have an Inspire, I don't really even care that they don't have 4g yet.. I think the most interesting thing in this thread is how defensive you get about it.

How was it proved wrong? There is no backhaul till after march 31st so I don't know what the hell your talking about. I'm also not getting defensive. Beside the fact that you should always research what you buy be it a phone a car or a pc so if you choose not to and other who aren't lazy choose to that's no ones fault but your own. A consumer should always be educacted and not rely on the maker or provider to tell them everything. So don't bite my head off because I don't jump into things blindly. Also show.me how my research about the backhaul was proven wrong ?

The part where you said everyone will have 4g end of march beginning of april, and then he showed that "everyone" still won't have it even by the end of 2011...

just like every thread with anything negative about the inspire.

Uh sure, research is great, but if a company advertises a phone as having 4g functionality, they need to deliver. Me researching has nothing to do with them falsely advertising.

It's not about the inspire first off because even if you have the atrix you won't get hspa+ speeds till after that day. Also we all knew that it was coming late why doesn't everyone else? Also its not false advertisement all there advertisement states coming soon. Even the tv commercials say will be faster with 4g and there is.the fine print which explains. Like every other commercial. My point is the knowledge is there. They aren't lying and if you look you can find it. The 2/3 does suck a bit but hopefully that's cautious optimism.

Research only takes you so far.

There had been rumors of the 5.0 mustang since late 2007 but thats all it was...rumor.

Ford was 100% silent on it until the very last minute (after the 2010 4.6 GT was on sale for 6 months already). Plenty of buyers assumed the 5.0 was still at rumor status and purchased one based on the fact that %50 of the reviews still picked the outdated 4.6 over the faster Camaro SS (because the Mustang had better visibility, more options, a trunk you can actually use, and was rock stable reliable and better built)....

Nonetheless, don't you think the guys were PISSED when they had JUST BOUGHT a 4.6 and Ford announced the 5.0 mustang with over 90 more HP and 55 more ft/lb of tq? I mean 4.9 0-60 in the 4.6 is nothing to sneeze at but 4.4 0-60 in the 5.0 is jaw dropping.... All research would have done for those guys is confirmed "a rumor".

What i am saying is...sure you can research it....but there is only so much info available and much of it not reliable...ergo, many people (in the "joe average category) just kinda say 'ahh screw it" and don't bother getting in the rumor mill and doin research because they consider it a waste of time..

But with it being advertised as existing and available. I think it is REASONABLE, for Joe average to expect thats what he is buying? No??

I love my phone and i am fine waiting, im just playing devils advocate...actually im playing "Joe average's advocate".

Just food for thought...
