Eris Locking Up !

I got the OTA update a couple of days ago, nothing but smooth sailing, then today I recieve a text message, go to check and phone is locked up!
Scrreen is lit up, but none of the manual buttons worked, nor the slide to unlock !

Did a hard reset and everything is back to normal. Googled the issue and found someone at the Verizon forum with the same issue, described below!

"I received a txt and went to check it but the phone was completely frozen. Screen stayed on, clock didn't change, no buttons worked. I had to remove the battery to get the phone working again."

Anyone else had this problem since the update ?
My Eris locked up last night ... I couldn't disconnect the phone call I was on. Had to remove the cover and pull the battery while driving at night! Not a good thing. Called VZW today and talked with Technical Support - they said they reviewed all the known issues with the Eris and locking up IS NOT on the list as a known issue! I read some of the posts found here to them!

I'm convinced this has something to do with 3rd party applications. I downloaded a 'brand name' weather application and my phone became very unstable (yes, the OS should do a better job of firewalling apps, perhaps 2.x will do a better job of this). I removed the offending app and no more crashes.

So... if you can stand it, hard reset your phone, and run for a few days in plain vanilla mode. Then judiciously add apps, tracking stability, etc. Of course this is absurd - I feel like I'm dealing with Windoze 98 - HTC/Google is aware of should fix ASAP.

I'm gonna have to call BS on Verizon on that one. There's a thread on the Verizon forums about 3 weeks old on this very subject thats around 2 pages long. Either they don't check their forums or they're playing stupid.

I've had the same issues - Reported it to both Verizon who act's like it's the first they have heard of it and also used the form to send a report to HTC. I'd suggest that everyone reports it to both VZ and HTC so it's logged

(Besides the frozen screen I get - Under 8 hours standby, no You Tube unless I press the button 20 times to play, 0 to 2 signal bars - Usually 0 with many missed calls, while my other Samsung phone has 3 to 4 bars - 3 minutes to bootup from power off mode and data rates that jump from 1x to 3g ever minute or so.

HTC was the best response to date:

"I would suggest clearing the browsing history on your device. From within the browser, press Menu, More, and choose Settings. There will be four options on this screen: Clear cache, Clear history, Clear all cookie data, and clear form data. Select each of these options to clear the files from the device's memory. Once complete, perform a soft reset on the device by removing the battery, waiting five seconds, and reinserting the battery. Please place your device into Safe Mode to clear any applications on your device"

I might just be a little confused - But I thought this phone was suppose to be able to run applications?? It's bad enough that you have to use the "Advance Task Killer" to kill task since they can't get that right - But now this! Looks like this will be my last HTC Eris or any other phone running the Droid OS. To me it's just way too new and not up to par - I'd put it in the BETA class and we are all their paying BETA testers.

Just wanted to share my experience

I got my phone on the 22nd of Dec. I had 2 lockups ....I have very few apps....3 I think...I havent had alot of time to play with it...It locked up twice right after christmas the first time after getting a text message...and I called and asked verizon to note my account. I havent had a problem since though..I dont get alot of text messages though. Im hoping that the 2.0 comes out before the 22nd of January or I might just leave the ranks of "smart phones" and go back to a regular cell phone.

It just happened to me for the 2cd time. I have added no applications so that is not a factor on my phone. I'm a newbie and don't know if my Eris has the update others are talking about.

They really need to fix this lock up problem. Not only is it a problem but what if there was an emergency or a very important phone call??...My husband had tried calling me while he was deployed and I could NOT answer because my phone locked up. I was very upset to have not been able to answer his call...

It seemed like after I did the updates the phone hasn't been the same since I got it. It would also lock while I'm charging it..

Another thing I don't like about it is that when I'm texting or dialing, the sensor is so slow. Maybe my fingers are too fast?

I love this phone, but the LOCK UPS are a BIG PROBLEM..so far it's not looking like a smart phone to me, more like a pain in the ass phone..lol

I'm still having issues sometimes. I try to pull the bar down on the lock screen and it won't continue after the bottom of the screen. I can let go of the bar and it will still show part of the screen behind the lock screen uncovered at the top. It just sticks at almost unlocked... And when this occurs, the menu button won't unlock it either.

This can happen when the phone is on the charger.

After working with capacitive touch screens at work for a long time, it seems to me that whenever the phone is plugged in, an electromagnetic field is created that makes the phone think you're touching it, even when you're not.

Usually, taking the phone off of the charger, and letting it sit there, screen on, for a while (off might work too, it's a funny thing), will make the problem go away.

That's tough. It shouldn't honestly be that common, once you aren't installing 10 apps per day and setting up Handcent SMS, and doing major configuration changes.

Restarting the phone every few days isn't uncommon, but battery pulling shouldn't happen very often.

I have a LOT of apps on my phone, use it heavily for work, keep calendars, have different Scenes, have tinkered with settings immensely, and rarely have a battery pulling event.

I'd hope that many others will concur. Something is causing trouble with your phone (an app or setting) if you're experiencing lock ups. If the slide bar gets half way down and stops, and won't move from there, but the phone still seems like it's not 'frozen', it's possibly a bad PCT, and Verizon should look at it. That's not normal.

It is known for this to happen on the charger, but not off. Perhaps the electromagnetic sensitivity of the capacitive touch is off, with the lock screen. That's a hardware problem, if so.

For those with lock/freeze up problems, it was suggested to me to take the phone into the VZW store for a complete software reload (not the same as a factory/master reset). Yes, this means you likely will lose all your downloaded apps, etc. and I'm not making a claim that it will work, but I felt it made sense (especially for those who bought their phone with the update already loaded) and would've been worth a try had I not already resolved my issues by another route. Good luck!

just to be sure, you are starting your swipe from the grey bar and not above it, right?

Of course lol. It does in fact move downward, quite unlike if you swipe anywhere on the top half of the screen downward. It will move slightly, and still be able to move up and down, but the bar part sticks in the bottom 15% of the screen. I can move it back up and it'll spring back down, still leaving part of my home screen uncovered.

Also, my phone isn't always on the charger when this occurs. It happened a half hour ago in my break between classes. I wanted to find the room number for my next class. I go to unlock it, and the bar gets stuck. None of the buttons at the bottom of the screen even trigger the vibration. But the bar still will move around when I try to move it upward from where it's stuck at the bottom... But won't finish unlocking. I locked it and put it away for a few minutes. When Auto Lock locked my phone, I was able to get the lock screen to function correctly... Maybe it's Auto Lock? (the lock delay app.)
