Wait - let's be clear on the speed thing.

What LOTR said is true of desktop CPUs.

It's not true of mobile SoC (system on (a) chip) processors. These beasties are way cooler than the old Intel DuoCore approach - they don't run at a constant speed like the desktop CPUs. (Your Evo doesn't run at 1 GHz all of the time, btw.)

Speed scales automagically based on the load - and in the Evo 3D's case, each processor scales independently - not true of all mobile dual-core SoCs out there today, afair.

I suppose I should have said each core runs at a max of 1.2ghz (in the 3D's case). My B ;)

It would cripple credibility and credibility is mega-important.

We own Evos, we like HTC. But, we're not everyone.

I expect a lot of 3D HDTV owners new to Android and new to HTC to notice this device - if they were to somehow blow the 3D, they'll blow a lot more than a gimmick.

That is a great counter-point to a different argument.

There is a difference between a "good" (or functional, quality, pick your own word) phone and a "successful" phone.

I agree with you in that there is a lot at stake for HTC with the 3D aspect of the phone. I think it is a foolish maneuver to call it the Evo 3D and I suspect that much of the marketing will center around the feature, which will be equally as foolish. That sets it up for failure, in my opinion. If the 3D feature doesn't work as advertised, then the phone faces the possibility of being a huge flop, despite everything else it offers. That would be a case of 3D keeping the phone from being successful.

That said, the success or failure of the 3D implementation will have absolutely no bearing on how well the phone performs its other functions. That is where the consumer becomes misguided. "I won't buy the phone because I don't like the 3D" is poor justification for a purchasing decision. It is justification that everyone is entitled to, but still very short-sighted. Turn the 3D function off and never use it once in the life of the phone and everything on paper suggests that the Evo 3D will still be a badass phone. Same with our current phones. Turn 4G off and the Evo doesn't become a turd. That is what I mean when I say that the 3D aspect won't cripple any other part of the phone.

For me personally, I have no qualms getting the E3D and never using 3D because I don't care about that.

But - if I knew the 3D on it sucked, then I'd never know if that would influence me to not re-evaluate 3D uses - and that would WAY bug me because it would mean I'm not using a gimmick as opposed to not using a feature.

At that point - I'd start wishing that I had some better feature already included I do care about - whatever that might be - say, the camera or speakerphone part or whatever. At that point, I'd feel a bit ripped off.

Totally goofy - I admit it - but that's me and there it is.

I have low regard for cell phone cameras due to their poor optics, image quality, and high resolution to record the crappy image. I'm hoping that because the phone is hyping its 3d capability, both in presentation and content creation, that they beef up the quality of the cameras.

I want this phone to have the best cellphone camera I've ever used. Part of this is the inclusion of the dedicated shutter button. That would imply a dedication of the manufacturer to the camera's ability.

I REALLY hope that HTC doesn't assume that the 3D jazz will distract people from the camera quality. I don't want to generate grainy, shitty 3D content.

So for me, I'm hoping that 3D is good AND that the cameras are good. If not, I'd be disappointed only because the phone had great potential in these features. The rest of the phone still looks nice.

I'm no camera expert but from my understanding the iPhone takes better pics due to the sensor on the phone. If HTC did not incorporate a better camera sensor or dual microphones for better sound during recordings then they are not about giving customers the best experience.

I don't take pics or do videos, just speaking up for those who do those things with their device.

The same company supplies the sensor for the iPhone as the Evo. They are of comparable quality. There's definitely things you can tweak on the kernel and software end to ensure that most pics come out better. As is typical, Apple nerfed the camera somewhat to provide the best user experience possible; whereas on the Android phones, the full limit of the camera is available, but that means you could get some really really bad shots (super high ISO sensitivity means super crappy image).

Didn't know this. Thanks for the tip. If that's the case, HTC should have done the same (stock) for the EVO. I'd be more than happy with iPhone 4 quality video out of the box. I am aware there are tweaks, but I don't take pics nearly often enough to have looked into it. Perhaps if they "short change" us with the e3d I will look into software tweaks at that point.

I agree with you. But what about the microphone problem with the EVO? Question posted for Lordofthereef and Novox77 and whomever else.

Not going to say there is a huge problem. Watched a youtube video of the EVO/Iphone at Disney world and there was a HUGE difference in sound quality. The iphone killed it when I saw that video. My sprint touch has almost the same sound quality when recording. Oh well, I don't use the camera or camcorder options on the phone.

IDK. I had the iPhone 4 for about four months and didn't find as big a disparity in sound quality as I did video quality. Personally I find the audio to be acceptable (not great, but not horrible either). Video, on the other hand, generally turns out blurry and doesn't give the impression of HD as is implied.

Interestingly, I have been pretty pleased with the quality of stills the cmera takes, so long as the photographer has a reasonably steady hand. That said, I have seen some TERRIBLE pictures taken by the EVO as well...

All I need to hear is a price at this point, if its ridiculous I might just hold on to my EVO. For somebreaason I'm very weary on renewing my contract. Want to keep options open.

I don't see it being ridiculous on contract. I think a lot of people are going to be sore about buying the phone outright off contract. If it's $450 (as the EVO currently is) from Sprint, I will still be in - and hopefuly sell my EVO fro around $150 to recoup a bit of the costs - but if people are forced into doing this and not given a 12 month upgrade price, their attitude may be different.

though this phone looks crazy, i might do the "wait and see" approach. if it was anything like the original evo release with all those manufaturing issues. plus twospirits makes a great point. the devs over at xda will have a field day porting some awesome roms that will have gingerbread and sense 2.0 to my current evo. i will definitely look forward to playing with them. it will probably tie me over until i can upgrade. especially now that sprint took away my yearly upgrade eligibility, i will wait. there is no way i will pay full price for a phone. i'm going to take a guess at the price at being something around what the htc thunderbolt is going for, $599.

however, i really do want this phone!

Can not agree more. Love the XDA and wait and see. Most poeple should try the root and see what EVO1 really does. Had mine for a year and it is now like a new device. Give it a try before you buy.:)

Love my Evo 4G, best phone I have ever had. I wont be upgrading to the Evo 3D though. I have had enough of waiting for Sprint to decide if and when my less than a year old phone (first Hero and now Evo) will get updated and if so, how many months its going to take. I ordered the Nexus S 4G today and cannot wait for Sunday to come so I can finally get me some Gingerbread!

one thing i don't quite understand is that it's dual 5 mp cameras on the back....which i assume is to MAKE the 3d pictures but if you turn it back to take 2d pictures (or maybe it ALWAYS takes 3d pictures and you just turn of viewability?) so does that mean in 2d form it has a 10 mp camera or that since each lens is only 5 it's going to be a 5 mp pic? yes i DO use my camera on my phone. i will be searching out camera and audio tweaks asap b/c it IS important to me. i don't care about 3d but a faster processor, the other upgraded features and a camera that has a better top quality might push me to get the 3d for thanksgiving. however i would probably much prefer the Evo2 whatever/whenever it comes out since the kickstand is quite nice and i don't want to buy a case b/c i use a holster instead....although i need to figure out how to lock the screen so it doesn't turn when it's on the kickstand (laying down on my side)

Nope. Both cameras are used for 3D pics but for 2D pics, only the main is used.
