Root 2.3 OTA Update w/ Rooted EVO vs an Unrooted Evo

Upvote 0
You are not unrooted if you s-off. Your rom is not rooted that is why busybox checker said you aren't. You should be able to flash a custom recovery and then flash the rom of your choice. I would try the recovery from the link I gave you and go from there.

THANK YOU,

i got my recovery up and nandroid got my MIUI rom back!!! ALL is WELL! THANK you so much. no i can help some1 one day if they face this issue.

I just rooted my Evo for the first time less than a week ago and didn't realize that would make OTA updates anathema. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone involved in this thread, I was able to get the update running without any problems following your posts.

One question, I don't want to go too far off topic but throughout the thread people have said that we'll probably start seeing GB Sense 2.1 Roms popping up in the next weeks... Where would I go, or what would I search for to keep an eye out for such things?

I'm currently rooted on stock ROM with Unrevoked3 (rooted months ago):
Android Version: 2.2

Kernel Version: 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e
htc-kernel@and18-2 #11

Software Number: 3.29.651.5

I want to flash the new rooted stock Gingerbread ROM (4.22.651.2),do I need to flash the update I missed (3.70.651.1) and then flash Gingerbread in sequence order by updates? I avoided this update because I didn't want the new Sprint apps like Nova.

TIA

I didn't know to ask this question here or on the FAQ provided in this thread.

You are in fact rooted. S-off means that security is turned off. If you select recovery, what happens? Are you just trying to get the new update? If so, there are rooted stock versions available on XDA here: [ROM][STOCK] --- Version 4.22.651.2 --- odexed & deodexed --- - xda-developers

I picked Recovery and got the following:

ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1
- apply sdcard:update.zip
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- backup and restore
- mounts and and storage
- advanced
- *****Go Back*****
It may sound odd, but I don't want to be rooted, I have to have it unrooted (for insurance purposes). How can I go back to stock format without root, and so I can update the phone?

ok so you have recovery that is good and you have s-off. so follow the steps in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide. there is a section on unrooting with steps that you can follow. if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

So I joined the whole "impatient and I can't wait" boat and decided to download the new 2.3 Gingerbread from the "HTC Software Update" option in the settings tab.

I just completed the download and clicked on "Install Later." Now the download is sitting in my notifications bar for whenever I decide to install it.

After browsing the forums and hearing raving reviews of those who have rooted their EVO 4G (and hearing that you cannot do it on an unrooted phone running 2.3), I want to stick with 2.2 froyo and root from there.

However, the question is, can I root it with the downloaded 2.3 sitting in my notifications bar? After I root it, will the 2.3 notification still be sitting in that bar just waiting for me to accidentally click it and screw up my phone's root? How can I get that notification out of the bar because I don't want to install it anymore and all I want to do is root my phone...

I have been non-rooted since I got my Evo last year. Been thinking about it for a long time but thought I would wait and see what this gingerbread OTA update brought. Needless to say, disappointment. I've done LOTS of reading and am I correct in that we have to wait for dev's to break this version of gingerbread before I can root now?

Yes. The root methods currently available are hboot and build specific, those who have accepted the OTA have different hboots and builds than covered by root methods currently available to us.

Don't worry, I'm sure the Dev's over at Unrevoked are hard at work.

First and foremost Welcome to AF!

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to root, the OTA hasn't been flashed, just downloaded.....So you should be good there.

As for getting rid of the notification, can't you just "clear" it?

So who is the brave rooted sole who wants to accept the OTA and see what happens??? :D:D

I did this just out of reaction...The option to install came up and i hit it not thinking, then my phone reset...ARGG..

At the time, i had the AmonRA's latest Recovery installed (from when i installed a VR_Kindom Rom)... so being it started, i patiently waited, watched, and held my breath.

Turns out, it broke my recovery, un-rooted my phone, but was a fully functional ROM still using 2.3.3 when done. I shut it down to verify the recovery, and it just gave me the famous red exclamation with the triangle.

Luckily I've been doing this for a while, and rounded up a stock rom for 2.1, named it PC36IMG.zip, let it fully do it's thing through the new hboot, and after it finished, i reran the old unrevoked3, which gave me back my root access, readded a recovery (clockworkmod), then i fully flashed a nandroid backup i had just before the update, and was back running and flashing custom roms again...

Hope this helps !!

Interesting. So you verified you had s-on when you did this? I have seen posts about people trying to use an ruu to get back to an earlier version with s-on and it wouldn't work.
