Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

I lost 3g yesterday and it has been very intermittent if not at all since. Had to call in. The tech had me do the same thing.

It didn't help at all.

My Evo was bought in November, no insurance thru Sprint or Best Buy.

The are sending me a new phone on Wednesday to replace it and waiving the $35 charge. They said the reason they were waiving it was because it was happening to a lot of people after the update.

Wow, thanks a ton for your post. After reading it I called Sprint and told them I think after 2 trips to the Sprint store and 3 hard resets I'm pretty frustrated. My new Evo should be here by Monday. :)

I am continuously now getting "low on space." I have nothing except pandora and whatever "bloatware" sprint has on there. Anyone else?

This. My phone has become unusable since the update. No matter how many apps I uninstall I'm always running out of a space. Most of my apps now crash due to low space when I open them, can't even run launcher pro anymore. I'm looking to custom roms to fix my phone.

Are you running Dolphin, by chance? If you are, check to see how much data it's using (Settings->Applications->Manage Applications...). Mine was using over 300MB for some reason after I did the GB upgrade and I was getting out of memory errors. After clearing it, everything is great and it hasn't reclaimed that much memory.

If not Dolphin, perhaps another app...

After all the issues I had with mine and the new ones popping up with the last two GB updates.....I caved and used my upgrade and went with the Evo 3D.....let's hope this one lasts me my new two year contract or I'll be selling it as soon as something comes out that I really like. As for the 3D I wont use it for much because other than having it on your phone you really can't do much with it. I do like the speed and sence 3.0 though. If root becomes available for the EVO 4G I would tell you to jump on that ASAP so that you will get more out of the phone.

I had my EVO 4G since launch, and never had any issues with it until the two Gingerbread updates.

Now I'm constantly dealing with:
-3G/4G/WiFi connection issues
-Sense crashes
-Apps not even force closing, just frozen black screens
-Camera app unable to reopen after a few pictures taken

Hey HTC & Sprint, if i wanted buggy software on my phone, I would've rooted it and installed one of the many custom ROMs out there. I really expected better from them.

I must say that the new Gingerbread update i recieved last month really sucks. It messed my phone up so bad I can hardly use it. It shuts off all of the time, when I turn it on half way through the yellow box boot it goes into sleep mode, then I have to push the button to wake it back up. And it takes a few seconds to get the main screen again, that is if it does not turn off again.
Now all I get for options when turning it off are: shut down, aiplane mode or reboot the phone. I no longer have vibrate mode as a selection.
Now it gets better, the phone goes through the battery twice as fast as it ever did and I have wi-fi, 4G and blue tooth turned off.
I have spent 3-4 hours on the phone with Sprint two different times and a couple of hours at the sprint store and I get the same BS, their is nothing we can do about the way the phone acts with the new Gingerbread update. They had me reset it a few times, pull the battery, call a five digit number for some kind of reset, etc.
I think thst they do not know how to fix it, so they are giving me a smoke and mirror act until I get tired and hang up.
They will not put it back to the stock software or replace the phone.
I am ready to scrap it and go back to my old trusty i580 and get the laptop computer out again.
The last time I called Sprint the Tech said that I should of talked to her before I updated the phone, because if it was working good do not mess with it. And it would not do anything if I reset the phone back to factory because after the Gingerbead update, it was the new factory software.
Has anyone else had this problem and has found a fix for it? Thanks

Well, I'm right in there with the rest of you. Since the update, my PERFECT phone has been a big problem. I had SYSTEM UID INCONSISTANCIES, , Application (process.com.androide.browser has stopped working), freezes on the GPS, freezes on FB, continuous rebooting the Sprint Splash screen and now, after the camera freeze today, all I can get is the HTC EVO 4G screen in a constant reboot. This week I have pulled the battery a million times, wiped the SD card a couple of times, clicked fast reboot off (did that before actually) removed every app, removed all of the widgets except of a couple, cleaned out cookies, caches and histories, and done a factory reset...and today...my baby freezes up when I take a picture, goes to the black screen of death and goes into a constant reboot of the HTC EVO screen. I can't even get to anything else to do a factory reset. Ready to cry! (never been rooted, just plan old stock everything)

Is there a way to get past the HTC EVO 4G screen to try another factory reset. It's been a terrible week. Thank you very much.

Well, I'm not experiencing all the "fun" everyone else is having, but I do have one issue since I upgraded to GB. Namely, the phonebook transfer on Bluetooth doesn't work. If I enable phonebook transfer, then my Bluetooth connection to my car keeps dropping. In other words, it keeps connecting/disconnecting, rendering the handsfree operation in my car unusable. I have to deny phonebook access to use handsfree, but it means my car can no longer display any changes to my phonebook. I have tried re-pairing, but that doesn't help. After many Google searches, I came up with some other folks that have the same problem after upgrading to GB. Add this to the list of problems with GB.

You know, now that it's been mentioned, my WiFi's been goofy too. Was thinking it was the router, but everything else running through it is fine. Anyone else's 4G turn on by itself from time to time. I held off on updating our Shift to GB. I have updated now, and doesn't seem to have nearly as many issues as the EVO. Wonder if Sense 2.1 has anything to do with it. GB needs something better than Sense 1.0 to interact with? Most custom ROMS with GB that have Sense are Sense 2.+. Trying now to shoehorn Sense 2.1 on the EVO while trying to retain Sprints BS apps(now including the NASCAR app as it only works on 3g and we all know how well that system is working).

I wouldn't find this nearly as frustrating if I hadn't spent a couple of months researching phones/plans/carriers before making the decision in Feb. Did all that so as not to be shafted for 2 years. Was very happy with decision till I dl'd and installed gb. Wasn't worried about root, why did I need do do that? My phone was working great. So much for that idea.....

I had been using my BlackBerry again for the last 6 months or so, having put my Evo on the shelf when Froyo was still the OS. I upgraded my BlackBerry to OS 6 and wasn't really thrilled with it so I figured that since Gingerbread was out it was time to give the Evo another shot. I updated to Gingerbread and have been using it for almost a week.

Not much of a difference for me compared to Froyo, except my battery life is WORSE. It was never very good from the start, which is one of the reasons I went back to my BlackBerry to begin with, but now it's significantly (subjective) worse.

I'm using Juice Defender on the standard/default setting and I'm wondering if it does anything at all. If it really IS doing something, battery life without it would be legendary bad. I'm running with:

WiFi: off
Bluetooth: off
GSP on
Background Sync: on
Autosync: on (GMail, Weather, and Facebook)

Well I'm adding a new issue I've found to my existing list. My battery has been about the same or even worse than before. I've realized the "Dialer" is taking up way to much battery. For instance right now, I have not used the phone today since unplugging and it has used 26%. Doing a cursory glance on the internet it looks like other have experienced inflated battery usage by the Dialer as well. At this point, I'm dying for someone to make it available to root this thing to get it either back to Froyo or to another ROM. The evo went from being the greatest device I've owned to being a huge PIA with the GB update.

F"n unbelievable! Went to take pictures at a family gathering in a restaurant and wouldn't you know it the phone rebooted 3 times! After about every other picture when the flash is being used. If the flash is off it doesn't seem to be as big of a problem. I've never seen this prior to the GB update.

HTC and Sprint if you're listening " YOUR SUPPOSED TO BE ADDING FEATURES IN YOUR UPGRADES, NOT TAKING THEM AWAY!!!!!" fix the damn thing already.

Just needed to get that off my chest....

HTC Sync will not recognize my phone and after a very frustrating hour on the phone with HTC, when they found out I had the GB upgrade, they said most likely that is the reason.

Things I have done to try to get Sync to work:
- 3 different USB cords
- 2 different USB hubs
- Uninstalling and reinstalling Sync on my computer 3 times
- Turning off all firewalls and anti-virus software
- Rebooting both computer and phone at the same time while connected

The last thing got me the furthest. Now the phone recognizes the PC but the PC won't recognize the phone. HTC is pointing the finger at Sprint. They want me to download Sync onto another computer and try to connect. If it works, they said it may be the drivers on my computer. If it doesn't work, then I can send my phone off to be checked to make sure the GB was loaded correctly or I can get a new phone or I can do a reset and lose all my apps, etc. I am so mad!

Has anyone else had this issue since the upgrade? Is there another way I can sync my Outlook without using Sync?

p.s... I'm new to Android (from Blackberry) and also new to posting. But I lurk a lot and I have gotten so much great advice from these forums, thank you!!

while this limits the use of the phone, one way to save battery is to run off all radios (not airplane mode) except 2g. That way you still get calls and texts, (no mms). I have done that in the past, and I was getting pretty good battery life.

You could also turn off auto sync, and just refresh those apps when you want to check them (probably not for gmail, but maybe, depending how often you check it ect.)

I'm with ya, hardly ever use my camera on the EVO but had to try and duplicate. true to form it rebooted after about 5 pics. not cool HTC/SPRINT.

And yes after the GB update i performed a factory reset.

I think it's safe to say the update has been a disaster. Again, with the easy to find issues I'm seeing on my phone (HTC crashing constantly, camera issues, syncing issue, etc.), I'm wondering if they actually QA'd GB on the phone. I've loved my Evo for the last year but the last 3 weeks has been frustrating to say the least. Might drive me into looking at the Within(S2).

My syncing issue has been more related to this:

Constant Syncing

Well guys the evo still sucks after the GB update two months ago, and yesterday the phone started something new.
Now it goes into a reboot loop, it will shut off and half way through the reboot it shuts down again and will keep going it until I pull the battery. The power button on top will not shut it down and it will do it about six times a day. When I talk to Sprint on the phone thay say take it back to the repair center, and the repair center center says nothing is wrong with it. What is a person to do with this piect of crap besides throw it away and get something from version or someone else?
