Sorry if this is kind of a newb question, but since they have rooted the OTA release already, wouldn't that imply that they will know how to root after a stock OTA push too?

If someone could explain this that would be great. Saying that it is two different things doesn't do the question justice. Thank you.

--Sorry just realized this was posted on the page before it.. DOH!

They've already got a rooted OTA GB rom available here:

Incredible Stock OTA [4.06.605.2] [Android 2.3.4] [8/17/11] - xda-developers

It's really fast!!

Loaded it this morning. Very nice.

So far my battery has hardly budged. So much better than the 10% drop that used to happen the minute I took the thing off the charger.

Only thing I noticed so far: the wifi doesn't stay connected when the screen turns off but it reconnects quickly once you fire it up. I'm ok with that as long as my podcasts get the chance to download over wifi.

I'm sure I will have to play with it to find all the new things but so far I really like it. Definitely fast.

The Custom ROM is a stripped down version of the OTA which only includes the ROM itself. The OTA is a larger package and includeds other things, I believe it also has a recovery image and hboot, which will break root.

Thanks Varkie!

Yeah, I noticed that the ROM on XDA didn't have a new bootloader, and was assuming that was a leaked version of the entire OTA, and therefore we would not receive a new bootloader with the OTA... I guess that is the $64,000 question, huh?

(ETA: I meant to say, if they DO have a full copy of the entire OTA, then they (XDA) know whether a new bootloader will be pushed, and whether it will break root, and whether HTC is imposing those new bootloader restrictions like with EVO in this OTA. Right?)

I'm not sure exactly how the OTA actually breaks root, either by flashing a stock recovery image or a new hboot or a combination of both. In any case if you have s-off the update won't change that, the unrevoked website explains why it won't. That is unless HTC has put in some type of code to restore s-on which I don't see why they would. So if after you update and still have s-off you should technically be able to flash a custom recovery by renaming it PB31IMG and then install superuser and have root back.

Unrevoked itself probably will not work to root until they come up with a update. I don't think its so much that HTC fixes the exploit that they use but more in that the hboot version changes with an update and that breaks it. I knew a little about this more when I had my Eris as the exploit that everyone uses has something to do with the timing of when the sdcard gets recognized at boot and being able to slip in a custom recovery at some point of that process.

I installed the Rooted OTA Rom posted at XDA and have been messing around with it. So far, I agree with others that it seems pretty snappy and I haven't come across any specific issues yet. I was running CM7 before. Even though this seems like a good build, I may switch back to CM7 because I really do not use many of the Sense features anyway. A non-sense ROM based on this might be a good thing in the near future.

Glad my phone is rooted and I am not having to endure an additional delay... plus I was able to get rid of some of the pesky bloatware that is included in the update!

Thanks to all who have posted useful information and links in the past 24 hrs.

basically, like varkie said, the rom itself can not be rooted once it's flashed to a phone because it removes the custom recovery if installed as an OTA. A custom recovery can not be installed unless you have root access to the ROM or an unlocked nand (s-off). There has been root exploits found in gingerbread, but htc had patched them in other phones.

So when you install the leaked rom linked above it doesn't require the removal of the custom recovery, so superuser and other unsigned files can be installed.
