Help Spurious Battery Temperature Warning

Anybody still having difficulties with this and finding this thread, go down the clean-it-yourself route. Worked for me. You will need: some isopropyl alcohol (disk cleaner), wooden toothpicks, some compressed air.
First things, remove the battery, sd and sim card.
Soak the tips of a couple of toothpicks in the isopropyl. then use them to carefully scrape the top 'tongue' in the port, the bit nearest the screen. you'll notice the toothpick gets quite dirty. Do this a few times with fresh toothpicks (or cut ff the dirty bit with sharp scissors).
Once the toothpicks aren't getting dirty any more, gently ease the tongue up, towards the screen a little, don't force it too much.
Use the compressed air to give it a good blow and leave it to dry for a while.

Its solved my problems, Battery Monitor Widget recognises that the usb is unplugged properly and no more warning triangles or poor battery performance. The phone, also gained an extra 20% of battery out of it.

Hi I am having the same issue, my phone was at a full charge this morning. I shut the phone off to write an exam and once i went to turn it back on i got a battery temperature warning and it would not turn on even though the phone was at room temperature. The only way the icon is cleared is if i connect my phone to the charger. There are times as well when I unplug the charger after a full charge and the phone thinks that it is still charging with the lightning bolt and also shoes the battery 100% icon.

Any ideas? Appreciate the help.. I am thinking i need to take the phone back in

I wasn't able to get hold of all the suggested materials to give a proper clean however during my best attempts at the 'fluff' removal process my phone started going nuts and continually going on and off USB\Charge without being near the charger...so I knew I was onto something.

Once fluff removal was finished the phone is back on good behaviour. I will clean properly when I get hold of all I need, but thanks to the poster for saving me the hassle of returning the phone.

I have the same issue, after soaking my Sgs2 with a hose :mad:

........yeah I know, pretty supid, but these things happen sometimes. I get the flashing battery and temp thing, and all the other symtoms

I tried this in the Vid and had it apart in 15 mins, pretty easy really, just have to be careful spltting it apart, use a Guitar pick or a Finger nail to start then a credit card.

I will post my experience with this hopefully in around a week-ten days, the item has to be posted from Hong Kong.

If soaked, then I would apply my standard fix for almost any device;
Remove any removable components (covers, battery, etc) as soon as possible
If soaked with anything other than water (like a sticky drink) rinse with clean\deionised water.
Leave device to dry naturally for 24hrs. DO NOT blow dry, place in warm oven, etc. (At most, place under a table light)
Once you reassemble, fingers crossed it should work again.

With regards to the soaked SGS2, if the above didn't work, and cleaning the usb port using the earlier instructions didn't work either, and assuming you don't have a warranty or insurance on it to cover for water damage, then I reckon replacing the the port may be you last option.

The above is good advice but I would place the wet phone in a sealed plastic bag with uncooked rice. The rice acts as a desiccant and will draw moisture away from the phone.

Thanks for the advice, i did all the drying out steps as soon as it happened, taking it apart,putting it in rice. It actually seems to be improving slowly, but still has intermittent problems with the temp warning and also the battery life is really suffering, getting massive sporadic drops. I am going to try to clean the USB port out again more thoroughly, and see what happens, if thats no good then I will hang on for the replacement part, I have high hopes that this will fix it. Be great if it does work, a $10 fix for a Broken/soaked S2 will be a good result I think.

I have that "spurious temperature" problem. When i shut down my phone, it never goes off. The screen displays a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and a thermometer. I have hard reset the phone and cleaned the micro usb using abro contact cleaner and toothpicks like 10 times, yet the problem is still there. Is this really a hardware problem?

Anyone got a concrete solution?

It will get fixed by itself after some time... I had the issue, struggle with it a bit, then was gone, never came back. It is the calibration when the phone is new.

OK HERE IS THE DEFINITIVE FIX TO THESE PROBLEMS. I was with a Samsung phone engineer and he explained it and resolved it all for me.

All of the behaviour issues mentioned here - charging, battery warning, reboot problems and USB link - are caused by moisture (or humidity in my case, I live in Thailand) getting in the USB port. The circuitry becomes short circuited and causes all the behaviour people have mentioned here. It is not the battery or the charger.

It is resolved by replacing the lower circuit module that hosts the USB port. The engineer did it in front of me, it took 5 mins, and everything is resolved.

Hope this answers everyone's problems.

I blew out my USB port with some compressed air and my phone seems to be working properly now. I blew it out 2 or 3 days a go and since then it has been detecting when I plug it in or unplug it properly.

Right after I used the compressed air, I tried to turn it off but it came back on by itself but without the temperature warning. Today, I am able to turn it off without it turning itself back on.

I suggest you guys try cleaning it as per andycorps suggestion or at least with compressed air which worked for me.

I am having the same icon with the thermometer and exclamation mark come up but my issue only started since an android system update last night.

But every time I plug it into the computer it comes up with a message like "The android system has crashed. Force close or report." Is anyone having this exact issue?

Howdy all. I went through it all over the last few days and the fix literally yesterday with Samsung. It is a known fault with the USB Port. Not that they will call it a fault per say, but they will fix for free at a Samsung service depot in about an hour or so - I guess it actually takes their engineer 10 minutes.

It was thanks to the forum that I knew exactly what to go and say and ask for. There was a certain amount of denial mode initially until I pushed it a little and referred them to the Internet forums like this one, then the issue was acknowledged.

Fix for me was they replaced my actual USB Port and the internal connections that they said had corroded. The engineer admitted it was a common problem and any little bit of dirt, fluff, moisture could cause it. Good Luck.

I experienced the same issues and this is how I fixed the issue.

Take the battery out.
Get something thin like a pin or tooth pick and clean the inside of the charging port. Ideally you would have some sort of proper electronic board cleaner like isopropyl. - make sure not to do so too forcefully.

I hit the home button to close it, tried to enable Mass Storage Device mode but it said the phone was connected (even through it obviously wasn't), and that I had to unplug it to continue.

Plugging the USB cable from the PC to the device did not work either. Well, I got the USB connected sound from Windows, but nothing happened (it did not show up as a device). I use KIES for updating firmware, it also did not detect it. It did detect it when I connected it later, but it just hung at "Connecting" with the spinning icon next to it.

After trying different methods to make it work, even doing factory reset, I attempted to restore my latest backup done through Kies (which worked the one single time it did connect after all this happened). I got an error message, after seeing everything got a nice green V, saying an error occurred. Checking my phone, everything was actually restored. But my battery indicator app did not wanna play ball with the battery, it wasn't measuring battery usage and the on-battery-timer wasn't ticking.

I took out the battery and left my phone opened with the battery next to it over night, next day same thing happened.

Since I work in a big-brand electronics store, I took a brand new battery from an exhibition model in our store, which I know was working, and the same thing happened. I also tried the charger from the exhibition model, it always started the same way and ran MTP upon boot.

This means it was not the battery. For double-checking, I tried a brand new battery right out of an unopened box, this also did not work - I also tried the charger from this, no difference in result. The problem was with the phone. Yes, it was dipped in water, and yes, I should've left it drying over night even though I managed to force every drop of water out of it.

I also saw that when I managed to start the phone after the incident while it was connected to a charger, my battery indicator app showed that the battery was giving overvoltage (3.91-4.13 volts). Temperature was perfectly fine however.

I can't say for sure if the contact with the water caused this, even though it most likely is, but this is the exact same problem as the rest are stating to have here.

End of the line, I just had to send it in for a check and possible repairs.

Hope any of this may help or give some clue to the others.

I am having the exact same problem and it is terribly frustrating!!!

Am not sure of the exact cause of the problem. I see on the forums a lot of people associating it with some problem in the connection port. This also happened to coincide with me updating the phone recently from 2.3.3 > 2.3.6 - Am not sure if it has anything to do with that as this problem started happening a little while after.

I have the following symptoms:
1. Battery temp icon flashing when it is switched off.
2. Sometime does not turn on and flashes batt temp icon until I connect the charger and then it automatically starts up without me having to press the power button.
3. If I remove the battery and put it back in it powers on, on its own.
4. Battery life seems to have fallen drastically.
5. Randomly shows the battery charging in notifications tab even though it's not connected.
6. Phone has started getting heated up very quickly lately.
7. Regular Samsung charger doesn't work any more for some reason. Only charges with another similar HTC charger I had.
8. Phone has become quite unreliable with sudden drops in battery life and lasts less than half a day sometimes.
9. USB connection mode no longer works - comp says USB device not recognized - so Im stuck with having to remove the SD card and load it up separately into the comp with an adapter every time I need to update something on the card!

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! Is Samsung not doing anything about this? This is rendering the phone almost useless!!! The worst part is, I've recently been singing all these praises about this phone and managed to convince 5 people to switch from their other manufacturer to Android on the SGS2 and now this cr@# happens. Lot of people gonna be really pi$$ed!

I had exactly the same problems that everyone has mentioned - it was a nightmare. I tried all the cleaning tips that people said worked for them, but no luck.

I took in into Vodafone (Spain), and they sent it off to Samsung on warranty. It came back two weeks later, but when I turned it back on in the shop, it was still screwed. So, sent it back to them again. Went to collect it this morning at the shop, and they have just given me a new Samsung S2 instead of fixing it - this suggests it could be a fairly complicated problem? Anyway, I'm happy now, fingers crossed it doesn't happen all over again.
