Help leaking internal memory

Thanks for the tip on removing alog files.

Just freed up 120MB

Which alog files did u delete? since then, any issues with the phone? I moved my alog events file to my SD card and it freed up 100mb. Went from 465mb to 565mb

also, for those using ES Explorer or Yaffs... where do us see the file size of each alog file?

Lastly, when I clicked allow Root access for ES it mentioned really quickly about "mounting" or this device has to be "mounted" ...it went away before I read it completely....what does that mean or do I need to do that?

Same problem here, full almost over night. I had installed Uverse Mobile a few days ago, and it's rather huge at 16mb and won't move to the SD card.

I installed Yaffs Explorer to try and find these alog files but they aren't there.

I have a very normal phone (I didn't do anything special to it - 'rooted' I guess it is?) and I barely have many apps.

I went to /data/, chose to view hidden files, and nothing. Am I looking in the right place?

Other than a hard reset and re-installing all my apps, I'm not sure what else to do.

Thanks!

You have to bave root access to do that. The only thing that you can do without rooting is to factory reset.

If you want to root the phone to fix this check out the all things root stickies and get the phone rooted, then you should be able to fix this issue in the ways described here.

I am also having the same issue with mine and I'm getting very frustrated. I am using the stock operating system and if I have to keep uninstalling apps to get more space, pretty soon I won't have any left.

I have cleared and uninstalled everything that I can and I keep losing space without ever installing anything new.

Any help would be appreciated!

Are you rooted?

Don't do a Factory Reset. You are asking for a lot of work to get back to where you are now as far as personal data and configuration if you do.

First call VMUSA on the phone and DEMAND that they address the issue. Tell them that you are tired of waiting for an update from Motorola which supposidly doesn't exist, but does because this has been admitted by VMUSA and it has been discussed on the MT Owner's Forum...

If they tell you that is all that can be done, tell them you'd like to speak to someone in VMUSA/SPRINT corporate. Tell them FDRs and rooting isn't appropriate for the average consumer, and rooting voids your warranty.

I'd recommend rooting however, because otherwise, you really aren't going to see a solution unless the update is provided to you.

When you root, then you can use an Explorer program like Antek Explorer to go to the /data sub-directory and manually delete them. Reboot and voila, done.

Rooting also lets you do two things that can bring you better performance and battery run time. You can "freeze" applications so they do not run (the bloatware apps, not the important stuff), and you can try changing the governor mode from "ondemand" to "conservative".

The only way to fix it while on stock is a factory reset. Complaining to VM won't help their issue.
I would recommend rooting or flashing a ROM, but if someone doesn't want to do that then THE ONLY FIX is to factory reset.
All the other stuff you posted does not relate to the user's issue. If they want to call and complain they can, but that won't fix the issue issue that they have.

@agenc13, with respect:
perhaps i did not explain myself clearly.

after experiencing the downside of the FDR, I have asserted root using the Terminal Emulator, rebooted, downloaded the file explorer I mentioned, allowed it privs, gone to the root of the filesystem, then the \data sub-directory, multi-selected the files and deleted them.

Should one desire, using the Terminal Emulator, they can de-assert root. This method is explained on the SDA site.

You're still STOCK during the whole process. You didn't delete or modify any apps.

There is no need to flash another ROM as an alternative to an FDR... I know you know that...

What I described however is NOT an acceptable way for a typical end-user to support himself or herself. We can probably agree there.

The point about complaining is that they (VMUSA) are claiming they are monitoring their feedback. If people don't supply them feedback that FDRs or rooting (and manually deleting files) is no way to keep the device operation at an acceptable level, then they don't know.

1. In gaining root access, you void your warranty, even if it isn't permanent root. Many people want to avoid that, and in fact are probably scared to do so (I was very apprehensive the first time I rooted one of my Android devices). And I agree with your sentiment that most typical users (not the folks who come here and want to root/flash ROMs) shouldn't need to do that. So the only other option at this point in time is to factory reset. Yes, it gets rid of all your personal settings/progress and I would avoid it myself if possible. But there is nothing else you can do without root access or flashing a ROM.

2. I have no problem with people complaining to VM if they are so inclined, but it won't fix the issue and more than likely VM doesn't give a damn. I have a feeling they wrote the MT off long ago and are hoping most users will switch devices soon. All the complaining/petitions/etc won't make them support updates on a device that they view as a failure already. I personally support any effort to get more support for this device, but I don't see it as likely, and it is probably a waste of time/effort.

3. Thanks for being high minded about my comments and handling them (and responding to them) in a professional sort of way and not taking them personally. (They weren't meant as a personal attack).

@agentc13 we are all good. i'm in agreement with your whole post.

i do however believe it possible VMUSA did (and still does) under-appreciate the problems with the phone. and while they learned from the Samsung Intercept, they haven't learned all there is to learn on supporting an Android device.

it is my opinion (and these are my guesses), they don't want to release a patch from Motorola for the MT because of two perhaps three reasons:
1). it will cause them support headaches that they are not staffed to manage
2). an OTA push will negatively impact the Sprint/VMUSA/Boost user experience because of 3G network loading
3). the phone is powerful, and hurts the differentiation with the Sprint phones - it's not good to have the low-tier plan having as competitive / capable product as the contract plans.

So, after all the information given, it looks like doing a factory reset is the only way to fix this. How is everyone else dealing with the leaking memory issue? Is everyone that has not rooted doing a factory reset on a regular basis? This is just crazy to me!

I think most people that ask the question here end up rooting or flashing a ROM.
It is ridiculous that you would have to factory reset on a semi regular basis to "fix" this.

Thanks for the thread guys. I deleted the ALOG crap, and also very large TXT file with system information in it. rebooted, and went from 40meg free to 400meg free.

As long as you realize that's a temporary fix, on the stock rom the log files will start to grow again as soon as you reboot. Flashing a custom rom will fix the issue permanently.
