What launcher are you using?

Yes I do believe the stock Google is just not that great. That's why we need TouchWiz, Sense or any other Launcher.

It makes more sense to use Launcher on a stock Google.

Have you experienced performance issues that make you say using launchers on top of oem ui's isn't good? or is that just your own theory. I personally have had better performance using 3rd party launchers, regardless of the built in ui.

No I have not experienced any performance issue. I guess processors are so fast these days that it doesn't matter much anymore.

But just the thought of layers upon layers of things (in this case Launcher) just doesn't sound right and make sense.

I think there's a misunderstanding here. When you install the launcher of your choice, it is not a layer on top of the stock launcher. The stock launcher just sits there occupying a little bit of flash memory but consuming no RAM and no CPU. There's zero runtime overhead involved.

That's why I asked earlier, what difference does it make, if using a 3rd party launcher doesn't affect performance? The answer is, it doesn't make a difference. And in fact, it does make complete sense because 3rd party launchers provide a lot more customizability than OEM launchers, which is what makes Android so great compared to all the other mobile OS'. Doesn't have to make "sense", if it doesn't have a negative effect on performance.

That's also why I don't agree with your simile with using 2 anti-virus programs. That would affect a computer's performance negatively. Using a 3rd party launcher on top of a bloated OEM UI doesn't.

By that logic, running 3rd party launcher on any phone with maker stock launcher like HTC Sense, LG, Sony UI skin, etc would be making layer on layers too.

But I don't think it works like that. When there are multiple launchers installed, only the one in use remains active and others are temporarily disabled occupying only small ROM space. There is no excessive memory used by multiple launchers and you can switch between them just fine. But usually I reboot the phone after switching launcher.

The thing I like better about 3rd party launchers is they typically use less RAM than touchwiz uses.

This is what I have experienced my entire time with Android. That is why I have been trying to figure out Chong's illogical reasonings.

No need to call someone out. Each person has his/her own preference on what they want on their device.

Some people really like TouchWiz and that's fine, while others hate it, that's fine too.

To each of us our own :)

Well, I wasn't trying to do that necessarily, but I think it gives a 'bit of mis-conception as to using 3rd party launchers. For any "new" android owners that come into this thread, they could read that and automatically stay away, without knowing the true facts behind using a 3rd party launcher. The mis-conception has always been out there (since I've been on Android) that adding a 3rd party launcher only makes performance worse, when that might not actually be the case. In my experience, I've had better performance using 3rd party launchers over the OEM UI's.

You know I couldn't agree more. The best thing I have encountered is when the ROM i am using is using the 3rd party launcher as their default :).

Otherwise it's just a matter of what the persons needs and wants are on their device. After awhile I know I found myself wanting a change. On my first device I used Sense for so long that I didn't even know there was anything else, then I tried Launcher EX and found there to be a lot of better options for launchers out there then the stock.

When I first got the EVO, I didn't understand what 3rd party launchers were, until I PM'd one of the senior members to ask exactly what it does. Once it was explained to me, I don't think I've used an OEM UI ever since.

At that time, it was Launcher Pro (and eventually Launcher Pro Plus) for me. All of a sudden, swiping between homescreens didn't have anywhere near as much lag, as using the bloated HTC Sense. Then, Go Launcher Ex came out and I switched to that (prior to going to the Photon). Then, once I had the Note 2, it was NOVA Launcher hands down. While, I did experience a little 'bit of lag on LPP and Go Launcher Ex (after several months of using), it was still nothing compared to the lag I experienced using the built in UI.

Just bought a Galaxy S4, not crazy about stock look & feel (way too cutesy).
1. Can I switch to a different launcher without rooting my phone?
2. Is there a way to save current TouchWiz setup & revert back to it if I'm unhappy with a different launcher?
3. Any strong recommendations: Next vs. Nova Prime vs. other?

1. Yes

2. If I'm not mistaken reverting back to TW from most other launches brings it back to how it was before you used the new launcher.

3. Tried some of them with my SGSIII, always went back to TW - which I personally adore, it has improved no end in recent guises from the Galaxy SII days, so I really couldn't say.
