Battery Life Experience

My Verizon M8 had amazing battery life, I could go through almost two full days of minimal to normal use. After installing 4.4.3, my battery is at 34% by 4PM after starting at 100% in the morning.

SOMETHING is causing this...not my imagination. I want 4.4.2 for verizon on my NON ROOTED phone!

How can I get 4.4.2 back??? This is insane...I turned location services off, brightness...etc..

but the fact remains...I use my phone NO differently than before 4.4.3 and now my battery suffers.

Who has the fix? THANKS!!!

Not sure if you tried yet...but did you do a factory reset? Make sure you use something like the HTC backup utility first which is "supposed" to be able to restore everything as it was before the reset. But many have stated that after a painful reset the problem was fixed. I only had a slight decrease in battery for the first day after the update and now it is as good if not better than before the update. YMMV :smokingsomb:

It's a company phone...cant root...and drives are encrypted. Factory reset could end up making things worse if I can't get it back to normal. I just wish I stayed with 4.4.2.

If it is a company phone, can you talk to your IT department and have them exchange it for an M8 that hasn't yet been updated?

I decided to use power saver mode to see how my GSAM numbers would look after a phone reset. These stats are insane.

I must state this again. Battery life is junk after 4.4.3! Fricken ridiculous! So those that are doing a factory reset are seeing improvements? And this HTC backup, it will restore all home screens and download everything that was on the phone back to the original state? Don't really feel like reinstalling everything and setting things up all over again. thx!

I don't think that applies to everyone. Aren't there people in this thread that say they haven't noticed a difference?

The only backups that do everything are for rooted phones.

If you want to be safe and you're not rooted, try Helium Backup from the Play Store.

Factory data reset clears all caches, including the one that you can't get to unless rooted - and those are very often the source of app and battery problems with all Androids.

Get Wakelock Detector to see if you have something weird going on with your apps.

Apps plus updates can hide where problems might be, Wakelock Detector can help with that.

I did that last week myself. I played my tunes via BT all day at work. I likely made three or four phone calls and a half dozen or so texts. Browsed the net some during lunch... came home.. forgot to charge. It was on all night long with no use. Same thing the following day. My BT headset lost power around six hours into my work day but the phone was still solid. I put it on charge when I got home .. was very low on battery but not red lined :)

I got mine Friday Night and installed the latest updates to 4.4.4 yesterday. I've been awake for almost an hour and a half and it is down to 49% from a full charge. Granted I've been browsing and texting a lot and had the screen on full briflghtness for a while, does this seem right? Also, I only get 3G at my house, so I'm sure that's a major factor.

50% in an hour and half doesn't make a lot of sense to me, even on 3G unless you're getting next to no signal.

I'd do a factory data reset, that'll make sure that the caches (especially the Dalvik) are cleared out.

You'll lose your settings and will have to reinstall your apps but if that's needed, the sooner the better.

Down to 50% in 1.5 hours is a big red flag. 1st thing I am thinking is that the battery level is not calibrated. I would definitely take Earlymon's advice and complete a factory reset. Better to do it now, than 2 weeks down the road when you have everything customized.

Once factory reset and cleaned out, put it on the charger, let it get to 100%, and then let it drain down to nothing. recharge it and recheck battery life. If it is still displying that behavior it's time to take it back.

If I move the apps to my SD card can I just reinsert it and still have them? I'm also hesitant to back up my texts and restore with Super Backup because last time it sent a bunch of people a whole lot old texts from as far as two months back.

You really want to back up your apps, not try to move them to the sd card.

Try Helium Backup, probably the best and safest non-root backup for everything it can reach.

I suppose I can just redownload the apps as I don't have that many. Is it okay to do the backup to Google servers? Will that be a very big upload? Resetting the phone data won't revert it to 4.4.2, I'm guessing. I guess I should also ask if I need to remove my SD card or if that will be affected.

Oh, and before I forget, how do I make sure the caches and the Davik get cleared?

And can I use it while I'm purposely draining the battery?

The factory data reset will take care of the Dalvik and caches.

Your software version will stay at what it is now.

There's an option to wipe the sd card or not. Don't choose it and your SD card will be fine.

Your backup is likely to be relatively small.

Okay, I'll start on it as soon as Verizon Messages finishes backing up my texts and I transfer the backup file and some other things to the SD. Thanks for all your help. So can I use the phone as I normally would as I drain the battery to 0?

Yes.

And don't force drain it to absolute zero.

When you get red warnings popping up, that ought to do.

Sol and I differ on the calibration advice - but absolutely zero is something to avoid, and why your phone shuts itself off before that.

I'm sure he must have meant functionally zero.

Okay, I'll get it down to about 3-5% and start charging. Text backup is about 60% done, then I'll get started. Thank you.
