Help Phone stuck in Clockwork Mod Recovery

Yep it'll be great if you can write up something for each catagorey for me to read and I'll send back any questions I might have. :)

Back to the topic of nandroids, the ".twrp" I have isn't a folder, it's a file that's on the same page as "BACKUPS". Any idea on that that might do?

And thanks for removing my serial number. :) My privacy came to mind but I didn't think it would matter since it was just a serial number.

Ok, so let's start with sideloading.

By the way you asked, you guessed correctly that depending on what's being sideloaded, I am WAY not ok with it.

If you mean to get paid apps for free, as most people new to rooting do, just don't do it.

I could go into morality because I'm a software dev and I don't want it done to me.

I could go into the law because it's illegal copyright infringement.

I could go into logic and explain that it's the number one malware infection vector, and everyone who has argued with me on that has eventually come back with a mysteriously screwed up phone despite, "Hahaha I got it from my friend and it hasn't hurt him!" - or - "Hahaha I can patch it myself so screw you!"

But the reality is just being a little bit of a thief is exactly like being a little bit pregnant. You are or you aren't and whether you believe it or not and whether it's logical or not, doing it affects your karma and it's never ok.

If you can't afford an app, you don't need it and there's probably a free one that's close enough.

But here is where it is ok to sideload and it goes into why I had you install SuperSU - an ad blocker.

Not because ad blocking is bad or good - but because ad blocking is done with a blacklist and that blacklist also blocks malware sites.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2190753

It uses zero battery to use that, because of how it works.

There are no names on the internet, just addresses - google.com is there for humans, a domain name server (DNS) action happens to translate that into the address.

Before that happens, whatever wants it looks on the phone instead of DNS on the network to see if it can save time. The ad blocker is just a list of names that say the address is a black hole so nothing happens.

But the only way to update that list is with root.

With rare exceptions like that - or other good tweaks from XDA - don't sideload.

You asked about overclocking. That requires root.

I don't recommend it. Overclocking means over-voltages along the way and tinker with that any you're going to own a paperweight if you don't know what you're doing.

"Hey guys, here are the magic voltages to use!" - yeah. No.

Get a high performance kernel where someone has done any of that properly, if you can find one - or just let it go.

What you really probably want is to change the governor from time to time.

http://www.xda-developers.com/your-guide-to-governors/

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005306

You can use this to change your governor and some other goodies.

Nandroid, don't use automatic task killing, and don't overvolt.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.liberty.toolbox

Not all governors will be shown, just the ones that your kernel may support.

SIDELOADING

Okay yeah, my main course of action when pirating is purely to trail that software.

For example, I don't want to buy a $30 movie, get disappointed, and never watch it again.

Or waste $15 on a music album that I won't even download into my mp3 and just keep on a shelf collecting dust.

But if I do enjoy the said product, I will most definitely go out there and purchase the official copy.

Other than the certain joy of supporting you favourite developer or artist, you'll also be getting a stable build of the software that you know is being supported by continual updates.

Or when you buy an album, you'll be getting higher bitrate files which are almost 4x the quality of normal mp3's.

Although I might allow some leeway when it comes to piracy, I 100% understand your point of view as a developer. Stealing is stealing.

So I will promise you now that I won't be abusing sideloading and I will only be installing software that you approve of.

So now that we've got that out of the way, I've downloaded AdAway. Could you explain how I could install it onto my phone?

OVERCLOCKING

Okay, so I've decided against overclocking my phone.

After using my phone for a while last night, I've realised that not only are the menu's stuttery and laggy, (my reason to overclock) my phone also heats up to incredibly high temperatures.

Last night, after 2 hours of messing around with my phone, I would guess my phone went up towards 50C in temperature. (around 120F?)

So yeah, I won't be overclocking any time soon. :p

And I read the article about governors, it's interesting. :)

I presume that the generic “balanced, performance and power saver” settings affect these governors?

I've downloaded ROM Toolbox and my phone has;

interactive, conservative, ondemand, userspace, powersave and performance.

Based on the article, interactive should be my default governor? And ondemand becomes obsolete because of this?

Powersave trumps conservative in saving battery so I should choose that?

Performance is an all out governor. (Do you recommend this?)

And I shouldn't mess around with userspace in case I botch up my phone again. (or should I?)

FIREWALL

And finally, I've downloaded AFWall+ and from what I've read, you can force your internet connection to block certain apps?

The only thing I see that is useful is the ability to conserve your mobile data and to prevent apps such as games and widgets to background refresh.

This is something vanilla iOS has the ability to do. Am I missing something?

And I would like to thank you so much for writing up these guides! I understanding that it is extremely time consuming and you've probably got better things to in your life. I really appreciate it!

Get ES File Explorer.

In firewall, do not give it permission to go out to the Internet (don't trust it for that).

Browse to adaway apk on phone - tap to install.

Or download an apk with Dolphin browser - when complete, Dolphin will ask if you want to install.

Be sure to allow outside apps, usually unknown sources under security settings.

OK to try any of the governors, stay away from user space for now.

Were you stuttering with on demand?

That's pretty unusual.

Go into TWRP, wipe, advanced (not the default on the main page) and choose to wipe cache ONLY.

See if that helps.

Okay downloaded ES File Explorer and installed AdAway. :)

Also downloaded Dolphin Browser to make downloading APK's easier in the future.

How do I deny permission to use the internet on AFWall+? I really need a step-by-step guide in these situations. :p

And just did a cache wipe on TWRP, I'll tell you if it makes difference.

Your firewall should look similar to mine (mine is the previous generation).

1427931781656.jpg

The Play Store has screen shots for yours.

Put it in white list mode. Tap the menu (actually the 3 dots are called overflow but I'm lazy).

Enable it and apply rules.

To not let something access the Internet, uncheck its boxes, apply rules.

The boxes are for your personal network (lan), the Internet via wifi, and the Internet via your carrier (the up/down arrows).

In your preferences, turn on notifications so it asks for your permission whenever you get a new app wanting to get out to the net - that way, no surprises.

Leave everything else alone for now and you ought to be just fine.

Check out "Titanium Backup ★ root"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup

Optional, lets you back up apps and data without doing a full nandroid backup.

Useful especially for when you might want to change roms for example.

Also if you get an app update you don't like, if you have a backup, you can go back to the version you prefer.

Requires Busybox, here's my preferred one -

Check out "BusyBox"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox

Otherwise, go ahead and roll with it and enjoy your phone. :)

Oh yeah - I don't know what Candy does for FM Radio but I expect that your model has the hardware to support it.

If you care about plain old FM Radio without the Internet, you can go into the settings for this one and make it do that.

Check out "NextRadio - Free FM Radio"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nextradioapp.nextradio

May not work for your phone, but safe to try.

Tips for use here -

http://androidforums.com/threads/if-youre-missing-your-fm-radio-after-lollipop.905205/#post-6920273

Camera 360 in the Play Store doesn't suck for a camera. If you don't want it running off for photo themes (some of which are pretty fun) just block at the firewall.

Snapseed is a good, fast, general purpose photo editor.

Anyway - it's Android, it's Lollipop, so - go have a blast. :)

Okay cool, thanks for all of your help!

I'll try out some of the apps you mentioned.

If you think that you've taught me everything that I should know, then I guess we'll leave it at that.

I'll be sure to direct message you if I've got any more follow up questions.

Thank you so much for your continual support and it really was an honour to have talked to somebody as knowledgeable and dedicated to Android as you.

So long my dear friend. I guess I'll be seeing you around in the forums!

My pleasure.

I think that the next things you need to about are here -

http://androidforums.com/forums/android-applications.4/

Read the sticky threads to understand Android permissions and why you don't want task killers or ram cleaners.

Then, if you're looking for an app or want to hang with the gang discussing apps, that's the place.

Keep an eye out here -

http://androidforums.com/app-game-announcements/

Some really interesting apps have launched here, sometimes with member freebies. :)

And you can give direct feedback to the devs if you like.

Okay cool, I'll be posting here from now on. :)

Thanks, I'll try Camera 360.

I've also got a problem with my storage space. I am unable to download certain apps because it comes up with an "insufficient storage" error.

My SD card still has 20 GB of free space and my internal storage, 200 MB. I've also set my phone to prioritize downloading on my SD card first.

The apps I tried downloading were Football Manager and Minecraft, and they are both relatively small downloads. I am also unable to update apps due to this problem as well.

Any idea on how to fix this?

There's also a really bad overheating and battery drain problem on my phone.

My phone gets so hot that my hands get pretty uncomfortable after extended use.

And in terms of battery life, I just played about 30 mins of Cricket Captain, which is not a taxing game at all, and my phone is already at 64%.

Is this something that is unavoidable due to such an old phone running Android Lollipop?
