What will your next phone be?

I spent a good part of Saturday going around to VZW corporate stores and mall kiosks trying to get them to bump my upgrade back one month so I could get the N6 now, and they wouldn't. Actually one of the corporate stores said they would, but only if I signed up for the 10 gig data plan. LOL. They must be getting a commission bonus on that right now. I'm having a hard time putting down $117 a month as it stands, I'm not going up to $130+.

The kiosks said they could give it to me one week early. 8/13. So that's probably what I'm going to do. Hopefully there'll be some new by then on the new LG and Huawei Nexus devices and the Moto might even be a little less than it is now.

What I don't like about iphones:
1-that we can't use an SD card. I like using sd cards (media cards) because I'd rather use em all up then replace it.. in the iPhone my gave to buy it with the storage loaded..
2- I don't like the fact u can't remove the battery - I have my external wall chargers..and I keep 3 batteries FULL at all times . When I'm out I'll never have to deal with a dead phone.!!! It's great.
SO I really want the newest version of Samsung Galaxy which will probably be a 7 by the time I upgrade 4/2016.I am using the Galaxy4s, as I got it 1 month before the Galaxy5 hit the stores-i was soo mad.

If storage and a fixed battery is an issue for you, then you're not going to like the new Galaxies because they suffer from the same issues.

Ok, now we know what the new Moto X will be - a 5.7" display. Blah. Despite the battery and the supposedly better camera (I'll wait for independent reviews of this, Motorola), it's just too big for me. The GS6 has too small battery life. I don't want anything by LG (burned in the past by several LG models that failed within two years). The HTC One battery is also too small, and I think it's still just a little bigger than I want it to be. Whatever the Note 5 will be, it will be too big for what I want.

I'm now almost certain that I'm going with whatever the smaller iPhone will be this fall. Sadly, while I like Android generally, there are too many compromises for that way I want to use it. Mainly, I want to connect my BT car audio or BT headphones and press play and have the last media I was playing start playing - that doesn't happen. I want updates to happen as soon as the update is available (this new Stagefright security flaw, while I think it's being overblown a little, may the last straw for me. I have a phone that can run L and yet, more than 9 months after the L update was released, it still doesn't have the update, with absolutely no communication from Motorola or Verizon when it will be coming.) The fact that even the newer Droid turbo had to wait nine months for an update means that I will never even consider another Droid brand phone. They lost me for good.

I'll have to see about battery life of the iPhone, but I'm willing to at least give it a shot.

After getting Lollipop 5.1 (second update just posted) my question about Lollipop vs. Kit Kat is ... Are you kidding me?

With regards to the delay on Lollipop on the Turbo ... my conclusion ... thank you Motorola for not inflicting the apparently flawed 5.0 on me and sending me directly to 5.1.

I suppose if I was a Bluetooth user I might have a different opinion ... I'm not.

The 64GB Turbo with the latest 5.1 update is great.

You misunderstand me a little. Android must get to the point that Motorola, for example, can offer an update within *hours* of a new update to AOSP. Not only should there have been a 5.0 build for the Turbo last fall, there should have then been a 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 and 5.1 (in March) and now a 5.1.1. The inability to update android quickly is an embarrassing flaw at this point, especially after yesterday's news.

(I don't use hangouts for messaging and I'm hoping that using Google messenger instead is good enough to protect against this new exploit. I guess we'll find out for sure next week when the exploit is presented at Black Hat.)

It would also help if Google didn't release what was apparently a beta version of Lollipop as the full release last year. What an embarrassment that turned out to be.

I suppose if I was a Bluetooth user I might have a different opinion ... I'm not.
It's not just Bluetooth audio - the same goes for plug in headphones. I should be able to plug in, press play, and listen to what I was last listening to. This doesn't happen much of the time on the Droid Maxx, and I'm willing to be it doesn't happen on the Turbo, either. I used bt in my example because, unlike ios devices, I cannot attach by USB cable to my car audio player and have music start playing. As with almost all automobile audio systems, android connectivity is either by BT or by audio cable to the headphone jack, which is even worse than BT - then you must actually handle the phone to play and pause music. (This despite moto voice - why can't I say the catch phrase and then say "pause music", or "play music", etc.?) But, yeah, I listen to media (mostly podcasts) about 90 minutes a day minimum on my phone. It does frustrate me when I'm in the middle of a run, for example, and press the play button to pause for a minute or so in order to concentrate on crossing a road and then press the button again and have nothing happen. The I have to stop, dig out my phone, and use the screen controls (which is often difficult on a sunny summer day). This happens too often.

I understand that my requirements are mine and not yours, and it's great that you're happy with the Turbo, but I know that would not be, would not have been if I had done an early update last fall. I think the Moto X was the last chance for me to stay with Android this fall. Well, maybe there will be a new Nexus that's a decent size this time, with decent battery life this time, and an excellent camera this time, which will work on Verizon when it comes out this time.

If instantaneous updaters are a requirement then there is an iPhone in your future. It is NEVER going to happen with Android. Google would have to change the way they do business. The change has to go through revision and testing by the manufacturer before it can be released. It is there money to provide the support after release and not Google's. Multi-organization coordination just isn't going to happen.

The pre-installed apps on Droid devices suck. I use Poweramp. Just for you I was on 30 seconds into track 6 on an album. I shutdown Poweram and rebooted. I then loaded Poweramp and it was positing at the beginning of track 6 of that album.

What changed my point of view about Android was ...
Tasker
Nova Launcher Prime
Pixel Phone Pro
chompSMS
Poweramp
CallX
Real Calc Plus (supports RPG on multiple number systems)
... a whole new environment.

Why Motorola? Simple ... it is my ONLY phone. It is reliable. It has the best voice qulity of nay phone on the market.

That's not the issue for me; the same thing happens with any podcast app I've used (BeyondPod, Pocketcasts). The same thing happens with the Google Play Music app. What doesn't happen is what I described above: you use the app; you play some media. You stop listening. A while later (sometimes less than a minute later!!), you reconnect your headphones, or reconnect to a BT device (sometimes the headphones or BT device are still connected). You press the play button on the headphones/BT device. At least as many times as something plays: nothing plays. I have to handle the phone in order to start media. (If I am driving when this happens, sometimes I can cure this with, "OK Google Now, open BeyondPod" or "open Play Music". But - it doesn't always work, meaning I have to go without sound until I pull the car over.)

This does not happen on iOS devices.

If the new Moto X had been a 5.2" or smaller display, with a 3000 mAh battery and a great camera, I may have considered it. I do have a lot of Android inertia (I've been using Android devices for almost six years.)

But, seriously, I'm not trying to get into an argument. I'm just answering the original question. I'm upgrade-eligible on August 20, so I have given this a lot of thought the last few months.

I'm not trying to argue either.

There are pros and cons to all decisions and each person needs to go with what fits them the best.

There is a lot of ready-coordination with a single company solution. There is a lot of innovation and competitive innovation with a multi-company solution.

Ultimately you are the one who will be using it. You should by all means get what satisfies you.

(Never asked but here it is ... products from Apple and one other company will never be owned by me.)

FWIW I've never had that happen myself, and I'm often using BeyondPod to listen to podcasts via a Bluetooth speaker, that's with an Oppo F7, and an older Samsung S4 I recently acquired. Not using Google Music though, because that's not available, but BT had also been OK with the phone's own music players and various other third-party players as well.

Is this something that's specific to Droid Max, not that I'm likely to be seeing one of those anyway, or other similar Motos?

Great sale on the nexus 6 today on amazon, 350 for 32gb, and 400 for 64gb. It's just a little too big, especially wide, and I would miss the Moto features. Also the Pure camera should be much better than the nexus 6 overall.
At that price I couldn't resist. Just ordered one. My wife got one when they first came out and just loves it. I'm gonna pass along my perfectly good Nexus 5 to my son. A few years ago I couldn't have dealt with a phone that size, but I'm home almost all the time now and don't have to worry about getting it in and out of my pocket anymore.

The Pure has roughly equivalent hardware to the Nexus 6. The edge goes to the Pure for the camera and CPU, edge to the Nexus 6 for screen resolution, battery, and a big one for me, wireless charging. Well, cameras aren't a high priority for me, the Nexus 6 camera is fine and the Snapdragon 805 must be good enough because the phone is fast and silky-smooth.

I was a little underwhelmed by what it appears will be the new Nexus 5. Not tempted to get the new Nexus 6. I think this will work out fine.

I still love my Maxx. But not having L just bothers me for some reason. I'm not due for an upgrade until December so I'll probably be looking at the Turbo 2 or maybe the N6. But the N6 might be too big. Now, if the the Maxx ever gets L I may delay on a upgrade longer. Just because I really like the Maxx.

You know what bugs me more than no lollipop? We're five months past the report of the Stagefright exploits and the Maxx still remain vulnerable. Meanwhile my three year old iPad third gen still gets regular iOS and security patches. This problem really needs to be solved once and for all. (Fwiw, the Moto X Pure, a new phone with no carrier approvals to wait for, still reportedly remains stagefright vulnerable. What's the deal, Motorola?)

Because my screen died on my Maxx (another thread), I had to upgrade and bought the Turbo 2. For $650. While the charging certainly is faster, I don't think battery life was as good as I had on my Maxx (or I'm using more apps). I also liked the weather widget better on the Maxx where I could switch cities easily. I also liked on Maxx that the home screen was in the center and you could go right or left to other home screen icons; on Turbo 2, it is only on the left. I do miss my Maxx and sometimes regret paying $650 for new Turbo 2 when I could have bought a new Maxx for $250 on some websites. But on that note, I don't find much less less then what I'm used to, so in that sense, it compares well since I use my phone a lot.
