Upgrade to note 5 or note 7

I'll try to keep this short and simple. Currently have a LG G3. Love the phone. But am due for an upgrade on verizon network. I usually upgrade at my local bestbuy and currently I want to go to the NOTE series phones for the bigger screen.

Here's where I'm having a hard time deciding between note 5 or 7. If I upgrade to the note 5 I only have to pay $1 for it as that's bestbuy current deal. If I upgrade to the note 7 I have to shell out $300.

I care mostly about hardware specs and I don't see much difference between the note 5 and 7. So the note 5 seems like a better deal for me unless someone can tell me why the note 7 would be worth my money + I usually put a case and screen protector on my phones so there's money for that as well.

To help you decide, remember that the Note 7 has a larger battery, IP68 resistance, and - most importantly - a microSD slot. If you trust your critical files and data to internal memory, you're a better person than me... if my phone fails, I want to be able to move my microSD card to a new phone and rock on. That peace of mind ALONE would be worth it to me. Also: USB-C charges faster and has a faster data transfer rate. There are a lot of advantages over the Note 5... in the end, though, the decision as to whether they're worth the extra cost is entirely up to you :)

I don't think this should even be a question honestly. If you are upgrading, the Note 7 is a far superior device. The Note 5 was gimped so badly IDK why you would even want it. Spend the $300 and get the N7, it is well worth it between the two phones.

I agree with all of this.

Out of curiosity, what "critical files" do you keep on a SD card? I wouldn't trust that any more than a phone. For me, I have photos and videos backed up in several cloud services automatically, as well as any documents, etc to cloud services. You have local-only files, that aren't anywhere else, on your SD card?

I don't know why the Note 5 is getting knocked here? I think it's a great phone. Bye passed the Note 4 and waited for the 5 from my terrible Nexus 6. I'm still using a Note 3 as my second phone and it works like new. If I were you the Note 7 is a no brainer!! $300. for today's top tech is a slam dunk. THAT SAID as a Note 5 user WOW what an underwhelming phone the Note 7 is!! Yeah it's better than most but certainly not so great as to cause me to run out and replace my Note 5. That doesn't mean I wouldn't want one but for $800.?? My Note 5 is barely a year and old does everything I want. There does come a point of diminishing returns and maybe we have arrived.

Criticism of the Note 5 foucault have stemmed from the snapdragon 810, battery and no micro sd. Battery was smaller than note 4 and 810 was known for overheating issues.

The Note 5 didn't use the 810. It used the Samsung Exynos 7420 CPU, in the US as well. The processor was excellent and the Note 5 performs great to this day for me.

The Note 5 criticisms I have seem stemmed mostly from die-hards who had to have a removal battery and/or SD card. There was a vocal minority who wanted those features for sure. My Note 5 is much better in every way than my Note 4. I am sure the Note 7 will be great as well.

With the launch perks.... definitely Note7. Expandable storage is the critical factor here in my mind. Although with the Note7 I wish we were getting the exynos processor in the US. Sure, snapdragon 820 is quicker in some benchmarks, but the exynos is a better at multitasking, better optimized by samsung and uses less power which equals longer battery life.

I'm having a similar problem to the original poster. My Note 3 works as new, which unfortunately means it takes crappy photos (my wife's S4 has much better camera). I'm due for an upgrade, but the only real reason is improved camera.

So I wonder about the incremental benefit of Note 7 over Note 5, in regards to the camera. The price difference is not too big here in Australia.

The curved screen on the sides could turn out to be a drawback for me, if it makes it difficult to hold the device without causing unwanted interaction. As the OP wrote, and I also intend to use a case, because the Note series is slippery. This negates any possible advantage the side screens could have.

11 days since my last post...Umm I don't know what came over me?? Maybe because it was so easy?? Just ordered my Verizon Note 7 to retire my trusty Note 3 I've owned since day one! I'll now carry a Note 5 (which is a huge upgrade over the 3) and a Note 7. I am also worried about the curved screen but I use Silicone TPU cases and they absorb every drop for $5.00 bucks (best if you break the fall with your foot...lol)!! I swear by them. I don't know what else to say I except I have Note fever!
