Help! Please Rom install

Sorry you didn't have success with newer version flash. Yes that loss of Return button was a bug that occurred in Lollipop flash upgrade. I had that occur in my phone and that was the reason I rooted the phone and installed version 6.0.1 Marshmallow (CM13). The button operation was restored when I installed CM13!!
There are many reports of the OTA Samsung update to Lollipop causing a loss of either Return, Home or Menu buttons and in some cases all 3 of them.
Why not get your g'son to do a Factory Reset to see if that restores the Return button? Did he do a Wipe cache after the flash? Neil.

Thanks Neil, I went into the 3 button recovery and did a factory reset and wiped the caches, but still didn't fix the problem.

Neil, I did go looking for a Cox, however I couldn't find one for my Gt-i9505 android 5.0.1 international for use in Australia. Would you be kind enough to find me a link for this rom, the link for the recovery you used and the GAPPS. I know this is a big ask, but you are the only person who's really helping me. My grandson did try to put on a custom rom on when my attempts failed, but he's tempt failed as well. So he flashed the stock 5.0.1, he did this a different way though, he just had one file, put the phone in download and opened Odin loaded the file and it installed. Hope I'm not being to rude, but your help would be fantastic. If you can give me the links I'll take it all over to my grandson son and try and get it sorted on marshmallow. Thanks Neil heaps appreciated. Regards Paul

Paul, I was very hesitant to root and flash as I researched heaps before I plucked up the courage to do the first one. I found and sorted out through users comments before trying any of the methods and have found that you just can't rush these things. As I Posted earlier my latest venture doing the Nougat flash has worked out well and I'm very happy with it. (not bad for an 81 year old).
I always print out the exact method where rooting and flashing roms is described and compare to see if there are any missed steps. It's a matter of keeping cool and not getting frustrated if it doesn't work the first time. I found when I purchased my first "smartphone" (an Ideos Huawei) that the instructions you got with the package were totally inadequate.
I Googled and located a pdf of the User Manual which contained 44 pages in great detail. I downloaded and printed it out and I also found there was a FAQ's Manual in pdf with 40 pages of how to fix problems that occurred. When I joined this Forum, I found a great number of users were struggling to utilize their smart phones through lack of info. They didn't know there were proper manuals available to learn from. The manufacturers manuals don't delve into "rooting and Flashing" non-standard Roms.
Samsung Manual has 75 pages in it.
I would, as you may gather, in your scenario use Odin and TWRP to flash either CM13 or XenonHD (Nougat) as I would want the phone to work 100% with all keys and buttons. :) Cheers Neil.
P.S. I renewed broken screens on Huawei 8150 & 8800 models and rooted 1. I've refurbished 5 Samsung S4's (1x i9500 & 4x S4's) I've also been in the world of build your own computers for over 13 years and currently have 4 running W10. I like to pass on my own experiences if I can as it may help others to try something new.

This is for CM13 6.0.1 Marshmallow. It has the link to download both CM13 and the GAPPS needed.

http://www.teamandroid.com/gapps/
This should give you the link to Download GAPPS for Nougat (version 7)
http://www.teamandroid.com/2017/05/...5-android-712-xenonhd-nougat-custom-firmware/
This is page 1 which should be read thoroughly, then as you scroll down you will see the Page 2 arrow which will explain the process to follow.
As I said previously, both these have worked 100% for me. One S4 to Marshmallow and one to Nougat. Neil.
