Anyone recommend any anime series that is for more mature audiences? (I do not mean hentai)

I'm not talking about DBZ, Naruto, Gundam, and so forth. I'm talking about more on the maturity of Mushi-shi. If you have never seen Mushi-shi... you absolutely must. It's not for people who love action in anime because this series is a lot more about drama, psychological and moral aspects of life, and the wonderful art. The art is just so beautiful in the show.

I'm hoping to watch more shows that are more on the lines of Anime dramas and ones that really make you think and not all action.

Ahh thank you so much for the link! I definitely have to watch the ones that others have recommended. I really like Mushi-shi and has such a wonderful feel. It's perfect for watching it at night because of it's calming atmosphere and also calming music. The English voices are also really good... Especially the master's.

If the art of anime matters to you, then you'll really appreciate it in here. It's very beautiful as if an artist just painted it on there.

yeah i'll def check it out. more of a classic by now but you might wanna check out a film errr 3 short films Memories. it's sub'd but it's awesome.

i guess i just started watching anime back in the day and it was more action orientated so i guess i just stuck to that style: vampire hunter d, ninja scroll, akira, ghost in the shell, and neon genesis evangelion.

still at the top of my list: cowboy bebop(movie and series)

    more recent: basilisk, noein

    and all time top: berserk

if that says anything about my taste :/

    Go for the classics:
    Robotech
    Star Blazers (space cruiser Yamato).

    Great storylines.

I remember when star blazers came on TV years ago when I lived in washington St.

I like the bubblegum crash series. I use to watch anime back in the 90's. Kinda got out of it. I do like dbz and dbgt. I could never get in to the DB.

Inuyasha is good so is bleach.

I'm trying to avoid shows like Inuyasha. Too much screaming and ANGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER! I've only seen like 1 or 2 episodes of Bleach a long time ago so I don't exactly remember what it's like. I'll give it a try though!

This may come as a surprise, but evne though it is action packed, there is a lot of story tellign behind the anime - I highly recommend Claymore

The only thing is that I also read the Manga and the anime basically pulled a non sequitur with the way the plot was done in the anime first season versus the manga through that same part. The manga is much more gritty, whereas the anime is a much more well developed (and flowing) plot - as evidenced by a good bit of the mangaka's Extra scenes 001-003 being incorporated into season 1.

Thanks all for those links. I have to agree with a lot of the recommendations here, Afro Samurai, Initial D and Vampire Hunter D are all good, and I am reading quite a few manga thanks to the Manga Browser - Android app on AppBrain app on my DROID, I spend at least an hour every night reading. Its funny, but the ones with the good stories also, oftentimes, tend to be borderline ecchi as well, but there are a few that are not - one that is a lot of action but still an interesting storyline is Arago, another Dance in the Vampire Bund (the last is a very slow moving story, for the most part, which all of a sudden picks up really quickly near the end of the currently released chapters, and then slows down again).

Death Note - what would you do if you found a supernatural notebook that gives you the power of life or death over anyone in the world, oh yeah, and you just happen to be a genius teenager who thinks he's smarter and handsomer than everyone else (and he is too damn him).

Full Metal Alchemist - looks like its for kids but there are lots of adult themes and a great plot.

There are two versions, FMA is the original. Its 52 episodes but about half way through they overtook the manga and had to make up their own ending.

The new version is FMA Brotherhood, which I'm watching now. Basically now that the manga is finished they're redoing the whole anime again over 60 odd episodes with the manga ending. Only up to episode 12 so everything so far has been pretty much same as the original!

    1) Death Note - Very dark, very goth, great plot and acting. Good in Japanese and English (which is rare) (get the Tomodachi or Eclipse fansubs)

    2) Trigun - Starts out comedic, but has lots of action. Gets very dark toward the end. Good in Japanese and English.

    3) Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Great overall show. Great plot, dialog, villains, comedy, struggle and character depth. Definitely worth watching. Best in Japanese. Get the Tomodachi fansubs

    4) Vampire Hunter D - It's awesome. Nuff said. Good in Japanese and English.

    5) Highschool of the Dead - Zombies and hot chicks. Lots of fanservice. Best in Japanese, get the Tomodachi fansubs.

To be honest I'm not the kind of person who enjoys anime at all. I have no interest for the Japanese culture and I don't enjoy hearing the Japanese language either: it find it extremely annoying. And don't get me started on the drawing style...

I will, however, admit that I enjoyed watching Death Note. ;)
