deleting downloaded photos into HTC desire

Hi
I have just purchased an HTC desire, and taken photos that are
now in wallpaper Gallery and would like to delete them .....

even the phone rep that sold it to me doesn't know ...

Welcome to Android Forums.

If you took the photos, they would be on your sd card which you can browse using the Gallery app. As long as you were using the stock camera app, they would reside in a folder called DCIM (or sometimes displayed as 'Camera'). When you open that folder you can select the files one at a time by long-pressing the thumbnail for the ones you wish to delete. Once selected you should see the delete button at the bottom of the screen.
