Source: HTC Rezound Multimedia Dock Review

Today we are taking a look at the HTC Desktop Docking Station for the HTC Rezound. I have been using this HTC Rezound dock for the past two weeks and would like to share some of its strengths and weaknesses. Be sure to check out the hands-on article we posted for more details on package contents and other details.

The main thing we need to cover here is the "Dock Mode" on the HTC Rezound. At first glance it is visually pleasing: it has HTC's mini clock/weather widget, a music player widget, a default rotating wallpaper, three program shortcuts, and a button to dim the screen. The two widgets are non-customizable and cannot be moved around on the screen.
If you hit the "Menu" button you are presented with three options: Wallpaper, Shortcuts, and Settings. You have all the same options in the Wallpaper section as you would when not in a dock mode. You have live wallpapers, slide shows taken from any of your photo albums, and any of the static wallpapers to choose from.

The "shortcuts" option is pretty straight forward as well. It brings up the three default program shortcuts. If you want to change one of the shortcuts all you have to do is select the one you want to change and you are presented with your main list of apps. This is practically the only way to quickly access any of your apps while in dock mode, so choose carefully.

The "settings" menu only offers a few things which you can change. It is here that you can turn "auto-launch" mode on or off when docking HTC Rezound. You can also choose how long before your screen dims itself, and whether or not to automatically connect to a paired Bluetooth device or a known Wi-Fi access point.

Click the "music widget" to open the music player app and access all of your saved music. Once you have picked a playlist or a specific album to play just hit the home button to return to the dock mode screen. The music widget has four buttons underneath the album: a previous and next track button, a pause/play button, and a volume button that opens your media volume control.

The "clock/weather widget" works much the same as the stock one that is included with the HTC Rezound. If you click the time it brings up the "Clock" app which has tabs for Desk Clock, Timer, Stopwatch, World Clock, and Alarms. If you click the weather section it brings up the weather app where you can see the current weather, the hourly outlook, or the 4-day forecast. In the top right-hand corner there is a "full screen" button which will show you an animated look of the weather with the usual weather statistics: actual temp, realfeel temp, humidity, winds, etc.

The Bad: With the option of only having 3 apps shortcuts on the home screen you are somewhat limited in what you can do in the "Dock Mode." I did also notice a little lag when switching shortcuts. When you pull the notification screen down or long press the home button you still have access to the last 8 recently used apps, BUT if there is something you wish to do and it isn't on the recently accessed list it can be a pain to get to it quickly. You can long press the search button to pull up the "Voice Search" app to make a call, send a text, search for an app or anything else Android lets you use voice commands for.

The Media Dock also charges the phone slower than if it was plugged directly into the wall, it took my phone just over 3 hours to charge from 25% to 95%. Also unless the phone is off while it is in the dock it is hard for the phone to charge to 100%, it seems every time I check it is sitting at 99%. I will also experience a quick drain to 90-95% battery. And while the dock does have some integration with HTC Sync I haven't tested this out due to the fact that it doesn't actually charge while plugged into a computer. If I was doing anything on the phone other than just letting it sit on the home screen the battery would continue to slowly die. While using the HTC Rezound Docking Station I definitely advise plugging directly into an outlet.

Overall, I love having my own little personal desk clock with quick access to the time and current weather. With the added option of using it as a desk calendar, desktop music player, digital photo frame, the list of what you can use it for goes on and on. While it is cumbersome to access some of your phone's features while docked, that didn't take away any of my enjoyment at using this accessory. The HTC Desktop Docking Station for the HTC Rezound adds functionality to an already awesome phone. I now have a full HD photo frame to view family pictures while working at my computer, a desk clock that gives me weather info, and an internet web surfing video player that I no longer need to hold awkwardly in my hand. What will you use it for?

Love to hear any feedback as always, good or bad. I'm still new to all this writing/reviewing stuff.

And of course ask anything and I will answer best I can.

Have you tried leaving your phone turned on in it overnight to see if it would reach 100%? That was my plan.

I did and if I left screen off it seemed better. When phone gets almost all the way charged it goes to a trickle charge. Since the dock already charges slow that means one you take it off the dock its usually at 95%(ish).

If you dont turn screen off then it stays on (dimmed as long as you leave that setting on) the entire time. Tested this leaving it on homescreen and also leaving photo album run....

    Thanks for the review.
My desktop dock charges to 100% every time. I have the screen auto-dimmed after some minutes (screen is still on, not on standby). I also looked at it earlier this morning... also 100% like always. Not sure why yours may be 99%, perhaps the battery is iffy/different or there may be many things happening in the background throughout the night like backup, network on/access, emails arriving or push email, etc. I do have my phone in the sleep mode from 11:15 pm to 6:45am as I don't like the phone to chime every 15 minutes with the emails arriving.
    bye

Can you watch a video when it's in the dock? Lastly, what was the price and do you think it's worth it?

    Thanks

    Welcome;)

And it just seems to me that it sticks on 99% for a bit(this is because of the designed trickle charge). It does eventually get to 100% but once off it will drain quicker than if you had charged it while phone is off. Which makes sense, was merely pointing it out is all.

Also for testing purposes I had photo frame going (nearly impossible for it to get to 100% when for is 'active') as well as screen on full...

    Still love my dock though!

Ultimately, do you think it's better to use the dock or just plug it into the wall for an overnight 100% charge?

    Thanks.

I would definitely comment on the fact that it lacks the plastic inserts that let you use it with a case... To me, that was a deal-breaker, and back it went. I'd love to have a media dock that (1) Works with cased phones (2) Charges the phone even when it's on Pandora or Slacker and (3) Has an aux out port so you don't have to plug the aux line into the phone. Admittedly you can also get around that using a bluetooth speaker, so I don't see (3) as a deal-breaker, but to me the first two are.

Any idea if using a 2 amp USB cable will speed up the charging in the car dock or media dock?

If all you want is an overnight charge I say just plug into wall, or turn phone off. For me it seems pointless to let the phone sit in dock mode for all that time with the rotating wallpaper and/or running photo frame. That said if you just turn the screen off I think you will be fine.
It will charge (as long as dock is plugged into wall) while doing whatever. It just won't charge as fast compared to just directly plugging into wall. Not sure what the difference would be with a different cord, it's my understanding that the slow charge is directly because of the electronics in the dock (i could of course be wrong).

Ran pandora with the photo frame app and phone still charged.... didn't pay close attention to how fast though

O.K., I'm glad it's on the "plus" side at least! ;)

As an aside, I was just browsing the Seidio site, and they already have their nice active cases and holsters available for GNex, as well as a desktop holder that is compatible with those cases... WTF? Where's the Rezound love?? Methinks Seidio fell for the GNex hype, and didn't expect the Rezound to be as popular as it is.

On the up side, I see that they're selection includes option for the Evo with extended battery, so that gives me a glimmer of hope that they might support the extended configuration of the Rezound... I'd love to see an "active" style case & holster that fits the "big butt" version of the Rezound.

It's just curoisity about the charging with this question :) :
When you use this destop widget without the dock and use the wall charger, is there this trickle charging too?
If not, then it has to be a "designed" trickle charging of the dock (I liked that expression you used in your review :) ).

The Verizon car dock seems to have the same designed trickle charging.

    :D I love it... It's not a "bug" it's an "unadvertised feature."

On a related note, pilots don't crash, they have a "controlled flight into terrain" and engines don't catch fire, they have "rapid oxidation events."

    Just sayin.

My recollection from the few hours I had mine is that it does have the cut-out for the extended battery, just no room for a case of any kind.

Yea it is definitely from the dock... not sure what the thinking behind that is... phone will get pretty hot around where it plugs in if you are keeping phone pretty busy....
yes, the pics in my review are with the extended battery
    no case action unfortunately

Quick question using the dock. When I select my desk clock it comes on fine but is there a way to change the time frame before it goes in to just displaying the time and moving around the screen?

I bought two of these, one for my house and one for my girlfriends house. The one at my house works great, the one at my girlfriends house does not. I finally noticed the difference, they are identical btw, the one at my house shows AC charging and the one at my girlfriends house shows USB charging. I don't really know what to do.
