Dialing into WiFi too quickly

Hi, I just went to a hotel and wanted to use their free unencrypted WiFi. So I turned off auto sync data and connected. But before I was even able to start VPN, Facebook, Whatsapp and Haypi Kingdom had already started updating. How is that possible? That's just what I DID NOT want on an unencrypted WiFi. How do I turn this off?

Updating as in updating the app or refreshing and getting notifications?

I don't know about the other two, but facebook is funny about that. You have to both opent he app and turn off sync and from the phones settings got to accounts and disable sync there. Mind you, some notifications may be pushed to your phone so they do not require sync.
