Is there a better SMS system out there? I am using LuancherPro and I can't stand the way the sms is.

I'm a big fan of Handcent SMS. Really nice interface and is very customizable.
It also includes SMS popups if you want them as well as quickreply.

ok so how do I get it to stop showing up in two places?

I keep setting it to be default, and when I quick reply I still have to go in and manually read it even after I quick reply.

Also, one last question. How do I get it to show up on my menu bar at the bottom that I have a message available? I've seen set ups like that, is it something I need to be rooted for?

to get rid of the stock notification showing up
go into your text message app (stock one)>menu button>settings>scroll down until you see "notifications" there should be a check on the right side>press the check so it goes away
that will stop your stock message app from putting up notifications

to get a number to pop up next to your message button on your home screen
on the home screen press the menu button>preferences>dock settings>and I check off "missed call count" "unread sms count" and "unread gmail count"
